    1. [HUGHES-UK] List Admin message - Rootsweb free genealogy mailing lists being closed down

    3. Hello. I am the List Administrator for this list. The following message was posted to the Rootsweb Listowners Announcements mailing list; On Tue, 7 Jan 2020, RootsWeb Administration wrote: > > Date: Wed, 8 Jan 2020 01:35:06 > From: RootsWeb Administration <rwmailinglists@ancestry.com> > To: rootsweb-listowners-announcements@rootsweb.com > Subject: [ROOT-LO-ANNOUN] RootsWeb Mailing Lists > > Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be > discontinued. Sincerely, > The RootsWeb team > > I am the List Administrator for a number of Rootsweb genealogy mailing lists. Like a number of other Rootsweb genealogy mailing lists List Administrators, I have started migrating some of my Rootsweb mailing lists, to groups.io, which apparently offers a superior mailing lists facility. I am at this stage, intending to relinquish the two Hughes lists, for which I am the List Administrator, as at the closure of all of the Rootsweb lists. The two Hughes lists that are involved, are the Hughes-UK list, and, the Hughes-Wales list. I therefore need a list member to step up, and to migrate this, or, both of the two lists, for example, to the groups.io platform, and, become the equivalent of a Rootsweb List Administrator. The job should be easier than being a Rootsweb List Administrator, due to the nature of the groups.io platform (if my replacement chooses to use that, like most of the Rootsweb List Administrators who are migrating our lists). This is relatively easy, for someone who has some experience as a List Administrator, and so, I am asking for someone to take this on. I can explain what needs to be done, to implement this, if someone is interested. Remember, all Rootsweb genealogy mailing lists are scheduled to cease operation, as of 02 March 2020. -- Bret Busby List Administrator Armadale West Australia .............. 2. E.John McGarry
    3. Hi Jean Please note that I am copying this data to another person who requested information. Information as promised is as follows: MCGARRY AND HUGHES LINES My paternal grandfather William John McGarry born April 17, 1880 at 3 Cooke street, Belfast. Died 1947. Married Mary Henrietta Hughes of Seaforth. Liverpool in June 1909 at Liverpool. MH was 19 at time. Died 1973. On marriage certificate her father is given as Edward John Hughes (Ships Rigger). William's father is given as John McGarry (Dock Labourer) Edward John Hughes appears on an 1891 England Census at 23 Granville Road, Litherland Liverpool. EJH is described as age 39, sailor and born in Liverpool. He resided with his wife Harriet Hughes (neé Wheeler) aged 39 on census but actually aged 29, son Edward, son John aged 4 born Bootle Liverpool, son James aged 3 born Seaforth Liverpool and daughter Mary Henrietta aged 1 also born in Seaforth. In 1901 Edward John Hughes is cited on an English Census relating to premises 31 Carnarfon Street, Seaforth Liverpool. All the previously named in the 1891 Census are inlcuded in the latter survey plus son Joseph Hughes aged 8, son Charles aged 9 and daughter Agnes aged 4. No further information is known of the latter but she is said to have married and emigrated to Australia. Joseph and Charles Hughes were believed to have been killed in World War 1. James Hughes is known to have emigrated to the United States and, it is said, eventually became Mayor of the city of Boston. I have not yet been able to confirm that possibility. The father of Edward John Hughes was Edward Hughes who was deceased at the time of his son's marriage to Henrietta Wheeler. EJH's mother was Mary Hughes but I can find no further information about her. It is believed that she might have originated in Belfast. McGARRY-HUGHES William's father was John McGarry who married a Mary Hughes in August 1874 in Belfast. Mary Hughes was from a distinct line from those Hughes mentioned in previous paragraphs. The marriage produced four children: Anne Maria McGarry in 1875. (There is no other record of this person and my relations knew nothing about her), Winifred McGarry October 1878, Sarah, October 1876 Winifred was the only sibling omitted from the 1891 and 1901 censi. It is believed that she remained behind on the Hughes' farm in Camly MacCullagh near Newton Hamilton. She was in the care of her aunt and uncle, Sarah Hughes brother to John Hughes. The latter remained a bachelor dying aged 84 in 1926. Mary Hughes was the sister of Sarah and John Hughes. She was born probably in Camly Macullagh of William Hughes, farmer in 1852 . I have not researched this Hughes' line beyond farmer William. Mary's husband John was born in the Parish of Legoneil in 1846. John was a hotel waiter living at 24 Bruce Street Belfast. Mary Hughes was a dressmaker living at 3 Wellwood Place Belfast. John's father was a Michael MeGarry. I am told that there is no legal difference between MeGarry and McGarry. Names were often written as they were heard or pronounced. Michael was born around 1830. He was a "Hackler" i.e using a hackle or comb on flax in the linen industry. Said to be a very hard and unhealthy job. He married Jane Burns in July 1852 who was also born in 1830 . Both came from Legoneil, Parish of Shankhill Belfast. Jane's father was William Burns, a labourer. No other details as yet. John's father was Thomas MeGarry, a shoemaker. There a good many Hughes names and a handful of McGarrys in the register of St. Machys RC Church in Belfast eg a Joseph Hughes baptised in 1864 The Baptismal records of Newtonhamilton Rc Church contain apprximately 80 Baptisms in the name of Hughes between 1845 to 1875 and 11 marriages involving a Hughes between 1851 and 1873. It seems likely that all the Hughes of Camly Macullagh are related to each other. In the early 1820s, from documents at St.Patricks RC Church Donegall Street, it appears that there was a cluster of McGarrys in the area. In the Tithe Applotment Books for the District of Shankill which lies to the Western outskirts of Belfast, for the period March 1828 to March 1834, there is the following entry: Thomas MeGarry Townland of Ballymagarry (meaning Townland of the MacGarrys and which is only half a mile from Legoneil) It appears that Thomas was working 15 acres of arable land in the hills above Belfast. In 1841, records for the same location indicate that John MeGarry was then working the 15 acres. It was recorded that the place was mostly mountain and was given a valuation of 18 shillings and 9 pence. By the time of the Primary Valuations 1858 to 1864, there were no McGarrys left in Ballymagarry. This is all the information I have at the moment. I hope it is of use to you Best wishes E.John McGarry ----- Original Message ----- From: "jean old" <old.jean@gmail.com> To: <hughes-uk@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 01, 2009 3:14 AM Subject: Re: [HUGHES-UK] hughes connection > Hi EJ > That would be great then i can compare them with what i have like you > i also have Hughes on both sides > kind regards jean > > On Sun, Mar 1, 2009 at 4:25 AM, E.John McGarry <emcgarry@sky.com> wrote: >> Hi Jean >> >> I will dig out what material I have accumualted both on the McGarry's and >> the Hughes. 1. Re: [HUGHES-UK] hughes connection
    2. My Hughes was Henry Hughes, born Cheshire, or Wallesey, 1850 or thereabouts. His father was John Hughes. Henry ended up in Kirkdale, Liverpool in 1878, where he married Alice Kirkbride (born Liverpool 1858), and they had 12 children. Applying conventional naming, his siblings and/or grandparents may have been Charles or Arthur, as well as the known names Henry and John. Family lore has grandfather John coming from Wales, where the family were coalminers. Henry Hughes was a railway porter on the LN&R, and I suspect he died about 1902. His children were named Alice, Henry, John, Martha, Charles, Elizabeth Lilian, William, Arthur, Edith, Albert, Janet and Lucy. All the men were dead by 40, or 1931 at most. Trying to delineate Hughes' in Liverpool is like trying to find the lightest straw in the haystack. 3. Hi Jean I will dig out what material I have accumualted both on the McGarry's and the Hughes. There were two lines of Hughes, both unconnected with each other. My paternal grandfather's ( William McGarry) mother was a Mary Hughes of Camly Macullagh, Newtown Hamilton. He also married a Henrietta Hughes daughter of Edward John Hughes. It will probably take me a few days but I will get it to you.
