Hello, Might anyone here have this variant of Hoyt spelled HAIT or HAITE from the areas of Orange Co. NY to Michigan and Minnesota and to Michigan in the 1830s-1880s? Father: Thadeus F. HAIT Mother: Eliza COSMAN Children: Margaret Jane HAITE b. 1830 Lattintown NY John William HAITE b. 1832 Newburgh NY Jacob HAITE b. 1833 NY Mary M. HAITE b. 1846 Michigan Michigan Counties include: Eaton, Manistee Minnesota County: Kenyon in Goodhue Co. Margaret Jane HAITE m. James SOMERVILLE 1851 in Calhoun Co., MI. He was a traveling minister of the Methodist faith. James also served in the 6th Michigan Calvary 1862-1865 (Custer's Brigade). Just a reminder to us all of the importance of POSTING data to the various boards. Why not make it a point to post SOMETHING to a board this weekend .... ? (edited for space) Written by Nancy Trice: Remember that blurb that most of us have put on our pages explaining ... In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. Read that last sentence again. GenConnect has provided the means for all the data to be cross-linked and indexed... not just within a state but internationally, and without having to visit a hundred different sites and use a hundred different search engines. What would any one of you give to sit down at your computer tonight and using the GC global search engine request a search for your illusive ancestor and find the following: 1. His bio on a Ky bio board, where he lived for awhile, linked to 2. His obit on a Tn obit board, where his married dau lived, linked to 3. His death certificate entered on a Tx board where he died while visiting his son, linked to 4. His will and burial information posted to a Va will board because that's where he lived, linked to 5. His birth record posted to one of the England boards, linked to 6. The family bible proving his ancestry, linked to 7. A surname board giving all those links, including a link to 8. His marriage recorded in the North Carolina USGW archives and maybe even a file giving you his mothers ancestry for 3 or 4 generations and who knows what else? ... links that could be making the connection that you yourself have been looking for for the past 25 years. (you may want to consider starting at one of these points ... Hello. I am looking for information about Sarah HOYT who married James Henry Hoaglund. They were both born in Cloud County, KS, perhaps in Clyde. He was born about 1842 and she was born about 1846. I do not know her parents nor do I know if she died in Cloud County. I do know they had a child born 9 Sep 1868 in Cloud County named Ursulla Camella Hoaglund. Any information about Sarah would be deeply appreciated. Stephanie Colorado
Lisa, Have you checked the classic "The History of the Hoyt, Haight, and Hight Families ...." by David W. Hoyt ? I checked the index for your Benjamin Leonard with no luck, although there are at least two Benjamin L.'s in the book born after 1800 (the first was born 1830, the other was Benjamin Levi, b 1818 in CT). But there is some good news regarding Alanson. There are two listed in the book. The first is the son of Nathan and Betsey Hoyt, born 1815 in Rochester, married 3 times, living in Sandusky, OH (as of 1871 when the book was written). He has siblings Truman (b1817), Sophronia (b abt 1821), Lucinda (b abt 1823), Cynthia (b abt 1824), Lucius (b 1826), Betsey (b 1826), and Huldah (b 1828). The father, Nathan, moved to Elyria, OH, and died in Lake Mills, Jefferson Co., Wisc. on Nov. 30, 1847. His wife Betsey (Merrifield) died 1/19/1867. Nathan had two brothers, one of whom's children is not in the book (Levi), and therefore *may* be the father of your Benjamin Leonard (and thereby the 1st cousin of Alanson). The children of the other brother, Jerry, do not include a BL. The other is Alanson Asa, son of Thomas J. and Anna M. Hoyt, b 8/6/1847 in Danbury, CT, married Melissa Nickerson on 6/27/1867, and lives in Danbury. Dave Hayt
Hi- I'm not to certain what the heck I am doing or how I got here, but I am hoping to find help. I have reasearched my Hoyt family for 17 fruitless years. Benjamin Leonard Hoyt is my ancestor. He was born 1814, NY. He married Mary Davis in Mason Co., Ill. 1850. They were in Decatur Co., Ia. 1870 Census. She died 1879 in Mo. He is living with his 21 yr old son James and his 13 year old dt. Naomi Rebecca in Liberty Twp, Putnam co., Mo in the 1880 Fed Census. He died shortly thereafter, I believe. BLH served in the 27th Illinois Infantry, Co E in the Civil War. His record appears to have been lost and so I have very little to go on there. His name is on the roster and the 1880 census says he is "crippled, maimed or disabled". After studying the family for so long, I do suspect that he is somehow related to Alanson Hoyt that is also in Mason Co, Ill. 1850 census. They travel somewhat parallel paths, but I have never been able to prove any relationship. Can anyone help me? Mclaflin@plix.com THANK YOU!!!!

>> Does anyone know if there is proof for Hannah's first wife being Hannah Knapp? It seems to be accepted as fact, but none of the books I have seen give any primary sources.<< Susan, Good question. I went and looked through my notes and also did not find a primary source. However, I do show that Nicholas Knapp, the supposed father of Hannah, left a will. But since he died in 1670, and Z and H were married about 1673, then he would only have mentioned her first name (if at all). The marriage is in Torrey, which is fairly reliable, but I guess the best thing would be to check the Stamford records. Z's father, Walter, left a will where he mentioned Z, but not a wife. I too would like to know what the primary source is. Dave Hayt

Dear caveycrew, All of ZH's children were by his first wife, Hannah Knapp. He and Mehitable were married when they were both old folks. ZH's mother is debatable. It is probably Rhoda, since as you mentioned, he named a daughter Rhoda, and none named Elizabeth. Elizabeth's last name is NOT known, the Sension/St.John has not been proven, although often mentioned. For a good source on Rhoda, see NEHGR, Vol. 149, "The English Ancestry of the Merwin and Tinker Families of New England"; July-Oct, 1995, by Douglas Richardson. Dave Hayt hayt@compuserve.com
Could someone please help me sort out the confusion of Zerrubabel HOYT/HAIGHT/HAIT please? He first m. Hanna KNAPP. She d. 1678. Had Abigail who m. John FERRIS (my line). Was the second son, Joseph, Hanna's & Zerrubabel's or the son of the 2nd wife Mehitable (ROCKWELL) KEELER? I have no death date for Mehitable but assume the children, Daniel, Caleb and Hanna were by Mehitable. Am confused why a girl by Mehitable would have the first name of Zerrubabel's first wife, unless those things were just done that way then. Also, did Zerrubabel and Mehitable have a girl named Rhoda? Now for the rest of the question. If Zerrubabel's mother was Elizabeth SENSION/ST.JOHN, and his stepmother was Rhoda TAYLOR, it means Zerrubabel named his last child after his stepmother. Would that be correct? If Elizabeth SENSION/ST.JOHN didn't die till 1694, and Zerrubabel was born almost at the end of the line of the siblings, in 1650, his real mother must have been Elizabeth, musn't it? I'm really confused now. While I'm waiting for a film from Salt Lake to come and hopefully sort out this family, does anyone have it already straightened out? I'd really appreciate the help and advice. Thank you in advance.
Now, is your chance to help... >>>From Larry Stephens those of you who have been around awhile will remember MAISER, the service I started these (and 900 or so other) lists on. It was brought down by a spammer who protested his innocence. Since then I've been spammed by his ads several more times (via other unfortunate servers). He is now being sued. I am including a message from the attorney asking for information. If you have information PLEASE SEND IT TO PETE WELLBORN, NOT ME. Dear Larry: I enjoyed talking to you today and appreciate any help that you and your subscribers are able to provide in my battle against Sam Khuri ("Khuri") and Benchmark Print Supply ("Benchmark"). As I told you, I am the Co-Chairman of the Internet & New Technologies Practice Group ("INTECH") at Arnall, Golden & Gregory, LLP (a 100+ attorney firm in Atlanta, Georgia). I was the lead attorney for EarthLink in its legal victory over Cyber Promotions, Inc. in 1998, and have devoted a substantial part of my practice over the last few years to fighting spam. I currently represent BiblioTech, Ltd. (a London, England-based provider of free e-mail services under the trade name "postmaster") in a suit against a number of spammer/spoofers, including Khuri and Benchmark. In this lawsuit, Khuri makes, among of others, the following claims, which will sound familiar to you and your users in the wake of the Benchmark spoofing incident in May 1997 that involved the Maiser servers: * that he has never "directly" sent out unsolicited e-mails; * that any bad deeds were done by a third-party contractor, whose name Khuri has lost; and * that he has never received a written complaint regarding his e-mail practices. I would appreciate any input from you or your subscribers that may help disprove these claims or that may otherwise prove helpful in building the case against Benchmark. Such information may include details concerning e-mails or written transmissions sent to or from Khuri or even telephone conversations with Khuri. Ultimately, I may want to obtain an affidavit from you and/or any of your users with particularly "juicy" Benchmark stories. My e-mail address is: pete.wellborn@agg.com. >>>>>>>>>>>> Thank you, Lisa

Hello, We are (at present) most interested in identifying the parentage of my husband's great - great - grandmother, a woman who was known by several variations of her given (or "first") name. Here is what we currently know about her, followed by what we know of James HAIGHT (her presumed father). **************** Birth (& given name): Her (presumed) father's Bible gives her (Ann Mariah Haight's) birth date as 29 May 1814 . The 1850 census says she (Marie Ann) was 33 years old (birth year abt 1817), born in New York. 1855 Census says she (Ann) was age 41 (birth year abt 1814), wife, resident 16 years, b. Madison. In the 1880 census her son Charles information indicates that she (Maria) was born in New York. Misc. & Census Data: · December 1837 - Fenner, Madison County, New York is the residence cited on her marriage documentation. · In 1838 she was a member of the Methodist Church of Cazenovia, Madison County, New York. · In the 1850 census for Sullivan, Chittenango Township (Madison County, New York) theirs was dwelling #110 and family #124. The members of this household were: Hiram Hall - 43 - farmer - born in Connecticut -property valued #3,500 Marie Ann Hall - 33 - born in New York James White - 15 - farmer - born in New York - attended school within past year Lucy M. Hall - 8 - Born in New York - attended school within past year James Malone - 30 - farmer - born in Ireland · 1855 (Madison County, New York) Census: Hiram, age 48, resident for 40 years, b. CT. Farmer. Ann, age 41, wife resident 16 years, b. Madison; Lucy, age 12, child resident 12 years, b. Madison; Charles, age 3, child, resident 3 years, b. Madison July 18, 1855 Death: Her daughter was born after the (summer?) 1855 census. It is possible that the mother died in or from complications from childbirth. "Hall, Anna Maria, wife of Hiram Hall" is buried with Rebecca (wife of James) Haight, their spinster daughter Amana Haight and two other unidentified individuals (illegible names on tombstones) in Haight Cemetery (a.k.a. Bacon Farm). This is the farm owned by James & Rebecca Haight. Both Rebecca and Amana appear on a list of members of the Methodist Church of Cazenovia, during the same time frame. Their relationship to Anna Maria Haight (Mrs. Hiram Hall) is unknown, but it appears that this was her mother (Rebecca) & sister (Amana). **************** James Haight (1776 - 1839) married Rebecca Slater (1774 - 1859). Their parents are unknown. James was "of" Mt. Pleasant, Westchester Co., NY.. In about 1803 the Haights bought an existing farm and settled down, on what is now (1997) known as the Bacon Farm, in Madison County, New York. He worked as both a blacksmith and as a farmer. Cazenovia juror 1810. Fenner juror 1827. 1830 Census: Fenner, Madison County, New York James & Rebecca had the following children: 1. Catherine (source unknown, she is NOT mentioned in the Family Bible Records) 2. Emeline or Emily (source unknown, she is NOT mentioned in the Family Bible Records) 3. Seth A. (1794 -1874) (he IS in the Family Bible Records) 4. Sarah (1800 - 1801) (she IS in the Family Bible Records) 5. John A. (1802 - 1857) (he is NOT mentioned in the Family Bible Records) (we have a photograph of John & Deidamia Haight's Grave) 6. David B. (1802 - 1890) (mentioned in "Pioneers of Madison County" & he IS in the Family Bible Records) 7. Amy (1804 - 1873) (she IS in the Family Bible Records) 8. William Henry (1807 - 1885) (mentioned in "Pioneers of Madison County" & he IS in the Family Bible Records & we have a photograph of his grave) 9. Sylvester (1809 - 1852) (he IS in the Family Bible Records) 10. Amana Marie (1812 - 1852) (she is mentioned on the 1850 New York Federal Census & in the "Cemetery Inscriptions of Madison County, New York - Volume I" & she IS in the Family Bible Records) 11. Andrew Amon (1816 - 1889) (he is in the 1850 New York Federal Census; we have a photograph of 3 graves: Seth Haight, Orrin Lee Haight & Andrew Haight, all in a row; & he IS in the Family Bible Records) 12. James Jr. (1822 - 1832) (he IS in the Family Bible Records) 13. Ann Mariah (our ancestor * see above*) **************** We would be happy to exchange any data with other researchers. At the present we are very interested in obtaining copies of documents or other "sources" which can help us to identify the particular ancestress and her family. **************** "R. I found 10 Hoyts listed in Starr's genealogy of old Cherokee Families. There is a surname index of this old book at http://members.aol.com/rarebk Once there, go to booklists and scroll down till you see the Starr book, and you can invoke the index from there. The site also has a Cherokee genealogy tutorial you can read on-line, showing how to do Cherokee genealogy research (and the most common problems associated with it), as well as the 18.. As we know, children are often named after ancestors. In Dutch families there were fairly consistent naming patterns. My puzzle involves the Murdock/Palmer family. I can account for just about all the Murdock side of the family so that I know the names given the sons were not Murdock ancestors although they may have been connected in some other way. Elizabeth Palmer, was born in 1796 and died July 12, 1828. She is buried in Braehead Cem. Kortwright Center, NY. She married Edward Riggs Murdock who was born November 11, 1787 in Harpersfield, Delaware Co., NY. Judging by the birth of their first son, James Bailey in 1814, they married about 1812. The Murdocks moved from Washington Co. to Delaware Co. after the Revolution. I don't know where the Palmers came from, but possibly Washington Co. The names of their sons in birth order are: 1. James Bailey 2. Daniel Palmer 3. Stephen Hoyt 4. Joshua Hobbie 5. Edward Riggs 6. Samuel Orson 7. John Orris Edward Riggs #5 would have been named for his father and great- grandfather. It would seem logical that Daniel Palmer was named after his mother's father except that the Murdock Genealogy by Joseph B. Murdock says that the name of Elizabeth's father was Levi Palmer. No Levi Murdocks appear among the descendants of Edward and Elizabeth, which seems strange if her father was named Levi. If he wasn't Levi maybe he wasn't even a Palmer! It's possible that Elizabeth's mother was the daughter of a James Bailey. I'm reasonably sure that these seven sons were named after real people. But who? Does anyone recognize these names? Edward R. Murdock was a Baptist minister. Could these people have some connection to the Baptist movement? The Murdocks had connections to the Scottish settlers of both counties. In some families I've been able to identify the mother's father with the name of only one son! Here I have seven! What am I overlooking? Any ideas? I hope I've been able to make this make sense. ____ Dorrie Traficante in Lexington, MA ZPQM64A@Prodigy.com Poor Spellers of the World, Untie!
