    1. Walter Hoyt (1878 - 1948) obituaries
    2. Walter Hoyt (15 Feb 1878 Brooklyn, Kings, NY - 21 Jan 1948 Miami, Dade, FL) was the son of William Riley Hoyt (1843 Wilton, Fairfield, CT - 1925 Vincennes, Knox, IN) and Phebe Jane Van Nostrand (1845 - 1907). He was the grandson of Walter W. Hoyt (1817 South Salem, Westchester, NY- 1892 Portis, Osborne, KS) and Hannah Austin (1820 - 1909) ******** Walter Hoyt's Death In Miami Blow to Labor ------- Grand Old man of Union Activity Loses Fight ------ Death of Walter Hoyt, Secretary-Treasurer of the Florida State Federation in Miami last Tuesday, caused sorrow and regret throughout the entire state and particularly among the hundreds of members of organized labor who for years have known "Walter" as a loyal friend and tireless worker in the cause of unionism. His passing was not unexpected, as he had been seriously ill for months, but refused to neglect his official duties or the publication of the Miami citizen, which he had owned and operated as the official labor organ for the unions of Miami and vicinity. For years, Mr. Hoyt had suffered from a stomach ailment, but doggedly fought against it to carry on his official duties. He had reached the ripe age of 69, and had served as the Secretary of the State Federation for 12 years with only an interruption of one year in that lengthy occupation of office Walter Hoyt will never be forgotten by union members in Florida, as his life-work was devoted to furthering better conditions for all who toil. as a guiding hand in the State Federation, his counsel and executive ability, was highly valued, through his constant study of matters pertaining to organization work and procedure. Seldom, if ever, during the past decade, was he absent from the Federation Conventions or meetings of the Executive Board. At the time of his death, he was member of Local Union No. 128, Office employees of Miami, and was also Trustee of that local. He was a faithful delegate to the Central Trades Union, during all his membership in the International Typographical Union of Miami, until his withdrawal when that organization temporarily withdrew from the American Federation of Labor. At that time, Mr. Hoyt transferred his union membership to other locals in order to retain his Federation standing and membership. Funeral services will be held in Miami, next Monday and will be attended by officers of the State Federation and many others from various sections of Florida. Obituary, Miami Citizen Walter Hoyt Citizen Publisher died Wednesday Walter Hoyt, pioneer publisher of The Citizen, with which he had been identified for 29 years, died Wednesday night in Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he had been under a doctor's care for some time. Mr. Hoyt, who had been long identified with organized labor in Miami, had been in ill health for several months and had relinquished most of his activities with the exception of The Citizen and those of the Florida Federation of Labor, which he had served as secretary-treasurer for several years. Mr. Hoyt was a devoted Miamian, having resided here for nearly 36 years. He was a member of Miami Typographical Union, 430, had served the Southern Labor Press Assn. as secretary for some time, served as secretary and president of Miami Central Labor Union and during the war years had served as a member of the local board of the Selective Service system. Mr. Hoyt is survived by two sons, William of Miami, and Edward of Neosho, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Frances Shirley of Emporia, Kan.; 12 grandchildren and one brother, Clifford, of Miami, with whom he had made his home for many years. Funeral Arrangements are in the hands of the Bess Funeral Home and will be announced through the daily press. In Memorium To the Memory of Walter Hoyt Born Feb 15, 1878, Died Jan 21, 1948 The name Walter Hoyt was known and revered by all men and women affiliated with the labor movement in Miami and Florida, and justly so. Walter Hoyt came to Miami when the city was small and struggling for a place in the limelight. He was affiliated with labor before electing to make Miami his home. Early after his arrival he gained a place in the hearts of workers here and throughout the state, as wellas wherever he wasn't known - and never found wanting. The placque - made and enshrined by old and tried firends - in the hall of Miami Central Labor Union is a worthy tribute to a worthy man, but even so cannot convey completely the love and loyalty that was inspired by our departed friend. Walter Hoyt was an associate and an enshrined member of the little band of enthusiasts who took over the publication of Miami's first labor paper, now The Miami Citizen, in its days of infancy, and he, as much as any of those that worked with The Citizen since those days, helped it survive to this day. May his memory live long. Obituary: Miami Herald Jan 26, 1948 Walter Hoyt Age 69, 144 N.W. 11th Ave., who came from Brooklyn, NY to Miami in 1910, died Wednesday. He is survived by sones (sic) William L, of Miami, Edward, of Neosho Missouri; daughter Mrs. Francis Shirley Emporia, Kansas. Funeral will be held at Westminster Presbyterian, 1790 N.E. Second Court with Rev. James B. Johnson officiating, at 2 P.M. Monday, Jan 26. Honorary pall bearers are Honorable Claude Pepper, George A. Smathers, Dwight Rogers, James Harper, Charles Silver, McGregor Smith, Luther Chandler, Archer K. Jones, Roy Singer and Interment Graceland Memorial Park.

    1. Indian genealogy
    2. Jeremy L Beller
    3. There are 5 Hoyts who sued to obtain Cherokee citizenship in the late 1800's, claiming they were of Cherokee descent! There is a huge, complete full name index of all these people at http://members.aol.com/rarebk/ They were Czarrena, Emmma, Herman, Milo, and I think another Milo. I also found a surname index to another Cherokee book at the site, an old book, supposedly rare, called Old Cherokee Families and their genealogy, with a lot of English names, but did not check for Gunter. I did have some names copied for me. There is some Creek Indian genealogy stuff as well. If you go there to the sites main page, click on the Booklists page, and then slowly scroll down past some old genealogy book titles until you get to the Cherokee section. There are some Cherokee genealogy books there, and at least two of them has this complete index posted. Quite fascinating! 2. Hi Listmates, This is just a thought that I wanted to share regarding Internet genealogy research.... Many times during my 'web surfing', particularly cemetery listings and census records, I will come across names that are not necessarily connected to my own lines but that I believe are being researched by others. It really doesn't require much effort to 'copy and paste' these things into emails and post them to Lists, especially surname specific Lists, that are subscribed to and it just might help someone in their research, and vice versa. 1. Westchester Co., NY misc Haight families --- need identification, please

    3. This was sent earlier today.... I haven't seen it appear on any of the 3 lists I mailed it to, so am re-posting. My apologies if you are receiving a duplicate. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Westchester Co., NY misc. Haight families --- need identification, please Date: Sun, 10 Oct 1999 12:08:00 -0400 From: "Brian & Terri Rene (DaVar) Howard" <brianter@macatawa.org> To: <haight@onelist.com>, <HOYT-L@rootsweb.com>, <NYWESTCH-L@rootsweb.com> The following were cut & pasted from a "search" on-line at a "pay for view" site, so they are NOT complete. The name of the document (book) from which the site obtained the data is given, the page where applicable, and then a quote from the text. I searched for "Westchester" and "Haight" because I am looking for the family of James Haight who was born in Westchester (probably Mt. Pleasant) on 19 Dec 1776. Can anyone identify the families mentioned in these various texts? I'd like to be able to eliminate anyone who is most likely NOT one of *mine* and start looking more closely at those who might be <grin>. Terri Rene P.S. In responding to this e-mail, please do quote only the excerpt you are talking about .... it saves on the eyes. Abstracts of Wills, Vol. XIII, 1784-1786 Page 377. --In the name of God, Amen. The 23rd day of December, 1784. I, SAMUEL HAIGHT, of Rye, Westchester County, farmer, being verry sick and weak. I bequeath to Hannah my wife the third of my estate, real and personal, during her life. To Thomas Haight, son of David Haight, Senior, twenty acres of land beginning at the quick trees in the corner of the garden fence. To my nephew, John Haight, son of David Haight, senior, the remainder of my lands and tenements, he discharging my debts and funeral charges. My negro man Jack shall have liberty to choose whether he shall live with John Haight, Thomas or Daniel Haight, my negro wench Jane, Jacob and Cuff to be sold. I recommend to John and Thomas Haight whom I appoint my executors to be "friendy" to Hannah my wife, they to assist each other confirming this will and no other to be my last will and testament. I, EBURN HAIGHT, of Bedford, in the County of Westchester, being weak in Body, do this 18th day of February, 1785, make my last will. I leave to my daughter, Abigail Haight, one bed and bedsted with a shift of beding for the same, and my Cobard to be delivered to her in one month after my decease to her and her heirs forever, and for want of such heirs to be devided equally between my son, Eburn Haight, and my daughter, Sary Lownsbury. I empower my executors to sell all my lands and Tenements and household furniture and pay my debts with the moneys that shall arise from the above, then what shall remain I bequeath to my daughter, Abigail Haight. I order my executors to take the moneys for my daughter, Abigail Haight , A Record of the Ancestry and Kindred of the Children of Edward Tompkins, Sr NOTE II. It is not certainly settled whether the Jonathan Haight who married Susannah Theall was the grandson of John, third son of Simon Hoyt, or the son of Jonathan, grandson, of Nicholas, second son of Simon Hoyt. The name Haight indicates a Westchester Co., (N. Y.) origin. As Mr. Hoyt in his Genealogical History does not include Jonathan, the alleged grandson of Nicholas in his list of the children of Jonathan and Rebecca Haight, it is manifest that he did not consider satisfactory the merely inferential evidence of the birth of such a grandson. In the absence of further evidence it seems to be advisable to consider Jonathan Haight, husband of Susannah Theall as the grandson of John Hoyt --third son of Simon Hoyt. This record is prepared upon that theory, but it so arranged that in case the other theory shall be ascertained to be the correct one, the revision that will in that event be necessary, can easily be made both on page 42 and on page 3. The Old Merchants of New York, Vol. 3, 1864 The branch in this city first appeared after the war. It came from the stocks I have named, and from Nicholas Haight, an extensive farmer in Westchester County. I am inclined to think the captain was a brother. Three sons of Nicholas were extensively engaged in this city not long after the War of the Revolution. They were Benjamin Haight, David L., and Gilbert. The celebrated Benjamin commenced at 52 Broadway, about 1784. From this stock have sprung a race of citizens eminent in all professions -- theological, legal, commercial and naval. In 1795, Benjamin Haight was the only Haight in the city. That year he moved to No. 152 Broadway, east side, between Liberty and Maiden lane, and he never left it until he died in 1813. He kept a saddlery and harness store. Abstracts of Wills Vol. IV 1744-1753 Page 82. --In the name of God, Amen, July 14, 1746. I leave the other 1/2 to my son Thomas, when of age. If either should die, then his share is to go to the survivor. If both die, then all the estate is to go to my sister Hannah Haight. 3. DANIEL AND ELSEY ANN (HANDY) HOYT. Daniel Hoyt was born in the town and county of Windsor, State of Vermont, Dec. 3, 1822, and was the youngest in a family of seven children,--two sons and five daughters. His father, John Hoyt, was a native of Hopkinton, N. H., as was also his mother, Joanna (Tenney) Hoyt. When the son was but four years old his father moved with the family to Allegany Co., N. Y. At the age of seventeen Daniel Hoyt sought employment away from the home-farm, upon which he had until then remained. Oct. 22, 1834, he married Elsey Ann Handy, who was born in West Bloomfield, Ontario Co., N. Y., Oct. 9, 1816, and was the second in a family of seven children. Her father, Russell Handy, was a native of Connecticut, while her mother, Eunice Houghton Handy, was born in Vermont. After his marriage Mr. Hoyt purchased a small place of seventeen acres of land, but sold out in 1838 and removed by team to Michigan. He purchased, in 1839, eighty acres of the farm upon which he now resides, and built a shanty upon it the same fall. During the next year he erected a log house. He is now the owner of one hundred and seventeen acres of land, and is in good circumstances. To Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt have been born ten children, as follows: Lucy Maria, Aug. 4, 1835; Almira Eunice, June 9, 1837; Dwight Handy, Jan. 29, 1839, died Oct. 7, 1854; Maryetta Eliza, Nov. 9, 1842; John Russell, Feb. 18, 1843, died Jan. 31, 1865, in the rebel prison at Florence, S. C.; Sylvia Susan, Oct. 16, 1847; Quincy Daniel, June 11, 1852; Edna Elsie, July 23, 1854, died Sept. 3, 1854; Edgar, July 23, 1854, died Aug. 20, 1854; George Handy, March 31, 1859. Politically, Mr. Hoyt is a Republican, and his views are liberal upon religious matters, although he respects the opinions of others. He has been very successful in life, and is esteemed for his worth as a man and a friend. This biography is taken from "HISTORY OF IONIA AND MONTCALM COUNTIES, MICHIGAN" by John S. Schenck. 2. My earliest Hoyt ancestors that I can find were Moses and Bathsheba (Crawford) Hoyt. Can't find anything about either of their parents, births, marriage or deaths. What I do know is that they migrated from Westchester Co., NY to Licking Co., OH about 1800-1810 with 9 children, a 10th born in OH. Would be happy to share what I have. 1. Clara Hoyt 1846 Maine
    2. Karen M Chambers
    3. I am searching for information on Clara Hoyt born May 24, 1846 in Vienna, Kennebec Co., Maine. According to some copies sent to me from the Cokato, Wright Co., museum (from a book about the history of the Mississippi Valley), she was the adopted daughter of Josiah Prescott Mooers and his wife Rachel. In the 1860 census of Middleville, MN, she was 12 years old, living with the Mooers, and going by the name of Hoyt - not Mooers. I have found quite a bit of information on the internet about the Mooers, but I would like to find out who her natural parents were. Because she was going by the name of Hoyt at 12 years old, could it be that she was an older child when she was adopted? Prescott was the maiden name of Josiah's mother, there were quite a few Prescotts, Mooers, and Hoyts in Kennebec Co., Maine in the 1800's. I am also wondering if perhaps the Mooers were related to the Hoyts in some way and that is why Clara ended up living with them. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Karen Chambers
