    2. Paul Howes
    3. Does anyone know how to reach this lady from South Africa who posted on this site many times in its early days? Last night, by accident I came across a note she had left on this board nine years ago concerning the family of James Henry Denmark HOWES 1860. As it happens, I¹ve recently been looking at this family for my website. So I wrote to Helen at the email address she was then using, but the email bounced. If you do know her, please ask her to go look at my site where she may find quite a lot of interest. Thank you Paul www.howesfamilies.com Horning, Norfolk; London; Bernardsville, NJ

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: HughSmith79 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.howes/449.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Lynn, If I recall correctly we have discussed this before. Since Richard married in 1583 we can expect that he and his wife were born in the 1560s. Unfortunately the Stonesfield parish registers do not start until 1571, so will not include any reference to their births or parentage. To research these families before the start of the parish registers you would have to try and find other sources such as Manorial or Tax records, early Deeds, Wills, etc. If you have the OFHS transcription of the Stonesfield parish registers on CD then I suggest that you read the couple of pages of notes explaining the conditions of the registers. In my copy, which is on fiche rather than CD, they come immediately after the lists of burials, and before the indexes. It seems clear to me that the early records are likely to be incomplete. The early Howes etc entries from the Stonesfield registers are as follows: 1583 Sep 23 mar HOWS Richard & POULTON Jone (not Jane) 1588 Jul 6 bur HOUSE Richard 1603 Nov 10 mar HOUSE John & MAYSEY Als 1604/5 Jan 5 bap HOUSE John s John 1622 Jun 14 bur HOWSE Alce w John 1622 Nov 14 mar HOWSE John & WILLSON Alce 1625 Nov 30 bur HOWSE --- s John 1630 Jul 4 mar HOUSE John & SMITH Mary 1631 Aug 4 bap HOUSE Alce d John 1632/3 Feb 17 bap HOUSE John s John & Mary 1637 Mar 26 bap HOUSE Bridgett d John 1639 Sep 15 bap HOUSE John s John 1639 Sep 15 burial HOUSE John s John 1641/2 Feb 19 bap HOUSE Mary d John 1642 Oct 1 bur House (blank) d Joh: >From this you should note that: (a) There is no clear evidence that the John who married in 1603 was the son of Richard & Jone. He may well have been, but he could have been part of another family and come into Stonesfield from another parish some time before his marriage. (b) There are no signs of Maria and Als, the other children who you attributed to Richard & Jone in your message. Where did you find information about them? (c) It is not clear if Alce Willson was the second wife of the John who married in 1603 or the first wife of John bap 1604, who would have been 18 and of marriageable age in 1622. If the first John had young children at the time when his first wife (Als Maysey) died, then it would make sense for him to have married again. But this is not necessarily so, and we can not tell from the few entries in the parish registers. Take a look at http://hounslow.familytreeguide.com/pedigree.php?personID=I02604&tree=T1 to see an example of someone researching the same family, who has taken the second option. (d) The bap and bur entries in 1639 are on the same day and presumably for the same person. Regards, Hugh Smith Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. They are thin though as a large part of the province not even developed then and some are from travelling clergy, so don't always reflect where exactly the marriage took place. Trying to think what war he would be fighting at that time - US independance past, 1812 hasn't started. You might want to add your DNA to the Howes project to see if there is anything remotely close. Also ysearch.org - you may come up with more names. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: vannorb Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.howes/453/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am descended from Hiram Van Norman. His mother was Lucretia Woodward. She was pregnant with Hiram when she married Aaron Van Norman. Hiram's father was not Aaron. According to a letter written by one of Hiram's daughters, Aaron just before his death, told Hiram that he was not his father. According to the letter, His mother had married a British Army Officer in a little red church in Ontario, Canada in the spring of 1800. The Officer's surname according to the letter was House. Shortly thereafter, he was killed in action. She married Aaron before the birth of Hiram and Aaron raised Hiram as if it was his own son. This story could be a complete fabrication, but it is all I have to go on. I participated in the DNA study here and have concluded that Aaron Van Norman and I do not have DNA compatibility. Therefore, I am trying to identify the British Officer as he is likely my 3G Grandfather. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Howes, the young man who attempted to kill Miss Buck, the schoolmistress at New Milford, Ct., last week, has since his imprisonment maintained an obstinate silence, and refused to take any food, apparently intending to starve himself. The Bridgeport Standard says that he is about 21 years of age, and had previously borne a good character. He now gives evidence of insantiy. Miss Buck it is thought will survive." Author: Cindy_Beane Surnames: Howes, Buck Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.howes/451/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have no connection to these families. This appeared in the Friday, August 6, 1852 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette under a heading entitled "Love Tragedy in Connecticut." "On Friday afternoon last, according to a paragraph in the 'N.Y. Tribune' a brutal attempt was made on the life of Miss Marilla Buck, a highly respectable school mistress in the parish of Northville, in the town of New Milford, Conn., by a man named Major Howes, of Bethlehem. Howes, for some time, had been paying his addresses to Miss Buck, but on learning something prejudicial to him, she notified him of the necessity of discontinuing his visits. He persisted and annoyed her at the school house; so that to get rid of him, she offered him one hundred dollars if he would never trouble her again. He left as desired, but returned and demanded the money. Miss B. requested him to withdraw until the close of the school, when she would talk with him. But he refused, and soon drew a jackknife, and inflicted five stabs about the throat, causing the blood to fly about the school, to the indescribable horror of the children, who ran out crying murder. Miss Buck, by a superior eff! ort escaped from the monster, and was met by some citizens who conveyed her to the nearest dwelling, where her wounds were dressed. It was thought she might recover though the case is regarded as a doubtful one. Howes was found, soon after in a stream of water, nearly drowned. He was resuscitated and conveyed to the prison at Litchfield." Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Mary F Lewis, wife of Augustus Lewis, daughter of "Mekijah" Howes, died in Worcester MA on 6 Feb 1899; age 77. Brought to Chatham for burial. Mary is apparently the 2nd wife of Augustus Lewis, but in the NEHGS data base both of Augustus's marriages one in year 1847-58 and one in year 1850 show up as "no image available".
