My McClinton's must have been related to Howes because the name Howes appears as middles names in several people, plus a great great uncle Seth McClinton is on immigration papers going to New York at 4 years old with two women, both Howes. I am waiting for his birth certificate to come through to try to confirm his parents. So McClintons were scotland to London to New York and Canada The person I am looking into is Seth Benedict McClinton I thought he was born to William and Eliza but I am not so sure now. Part of the problem is that I lost a lot of my research and I am kind of starting again when I can. Are you a Howes? Many thanks again for your reply. Using the Advanced Search button to search for people: (a) called Howes (b) born in places containing the characters "bucking" and (c) born before 1820 yields a list of a dozen names. Hopefully this will be of some help to you. We're a long way from having a complete database, however. So if you can help us build the database further please do get in touch. TIA if you can. His son, Edward L. Howes was my grandfather. You must be related to Frances Brown, his sister. I have found several links on ancestry to Walter and yes his father was Silas. Using that and restricting a search to London/Surrey there are 3 candidates, all born in south east London (Camberwell, Bermondsey and Southwark). You might get lucky and find something which indicates one over another. - The www.howesfamilies.com website can be a useful resource, but I couldn't see any Croydon connections there from a quick look. It's free, so you may want to look further, or ask there. - order a copy of the marriage certificate (direct from GRO is cheaper than via Ancestry) which should have a more precise age, his father's name and if you are lucky a middle name. With luck you can find the father in 1901 or 1911 census. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I like to help people with Howes-related problems if I can. It may just be co-incidence but there was a Rosemary N Howes born to a mother named Beck in Windsor RD in 1917. Perhaps another co-incidence, but a Hilda M Howes was also born to a mother named Beck in Wayland RD in 1911. There is a marriage of a Charles Howes to a Violet Beck in Norwich at about that time, but not until 1914. So I doubt Hilda was theirs and given the Windsor connection you mention I doubt Rosemary was too. I think you'd have to obtain the birth certificate for Rosemary and Hilda to be sure they are children of James and Violet, but the chances look good to me, though I do not understand the Beck connection, yet. Does it mean anything to you? Also I don't suppose the girls' initials tie up with the information you have on their subsequent lives, do they? Hope this helps. I cannot answer your question directly, I'm afraid; i am the founder of the "one-name study" into the Howes/Howse/Hows and House names, all of which are frequently interchangeable and variants of each other. If you go to my (non-commercial) website and run a search for Richard Howes born within 2 years of 1774, you will find three individuals. As it happens, all of them are born in Norfolk in England, but that's likely as much a reflection of where my study started out, as well as being the main centre of the Howes name in the UK. My site is far from being the authoritative guide but with now almost 24,000 people listed it might be interesting for you to take a look.
