    1. [HOWES] Howes - Great Yarmouth 1939 (around that time)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: pixiekiz Surnames: Howes Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.howes/472/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I've come to a dead end trying to Research my grandfather's family. He was born Reginald A. Howes in Great Yarmouth on the 21st November 1939. His mother's name on the birth certificate as 'Betty' Howes and he was born in the presence of his maternal grandmother who is named as 'N' Howes. At the time, the grandmother owned the property (28 Paget Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk) which was a bedsit. I have been able to find a register of his birth on the records for 1939 in Great Yarmouth, but otherwise there is no information of his family. IT does however specify that his mother's -maiden- name was Howes, so we can speculate that perhaps he was an illegitimate child. At some point within the next few years he wound up living in Clydebank, Scotland which we are unable to understand how he ended up there, never the less he was transported during the evacuation to Dumfries in Scotland where he grew up a fostered child with his 'brother' Michael. They were raised under the name of Rourke; however when my Grandfather went to get married it was found that his birth name was Howes and that Michaels birth name was Reeves. Preferably, I would like some information on either the Betty Howes or N Howes as I would like to be able to shine some light on his family and let him know that he does in fact, have a history. If anyone is able to give me some information on that, then I would love to hear it, even if you knew either of the women I would be much obliged to find out. Thanks! Author: bishopnick1 Surnames: HOWES FOSTER CHERRY Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.howes/469/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I am trying to contact a direct relation to Albert HOWES, who was born in Thame, England on 28/6/1884. He married Laura Beatrice FOSTER in Lambeth in 1908 and they had a son Albert Harry William HOWES b1909 in Liverpool. Albert emigrated to Canada in about 1922, it appears without his wife, and then he moved to the USA later that same year. He died in Florida on 2/4/1970. His parents were Catherine b1848 and (I think) James John Howes. I cannot find any further record of their son, whether he died or emigrated too, or if he had a family. Albert senior had a sister Mable who married Albert Cherry and a brother Frederick who died as an infant. Anyone know anything about old Albert? Did he have another family in the US? He lived in Chicago and worked as a printer. Thanks for any help! Nick Bishop Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RIP2011 Surnames: Howes Classification: military Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.howes/464.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 670-11 August 02, 2011 Soldier Missing from Vietnam War Identified The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of a serviceman, missing in action from the Vietnam War, have been identified and will be returned to his family for burial with full military honors. Army Chief Warrant Officer George A. Howes, of Knox, Ind., will be buried Aug. 5 in Arlington National Cemetery. On Jan. 10, 1970, Howes and three aircrew members were returning to their base at Chu Lai, South Vietnam aboard a UH-1C Huey helicopter. Due to bad weather, their helicopter went down over Quang Nam Province, Socialist Republic of Vietnam (S.R.V.). A search was initiated for the crew, but no sign of the helicopter or crew was spotted. In 1989, the S.R.V. gave to U.S. specialists 25 boxes that reportedly contained the remains of U.S. servicemen related to this incident. Later that year, additional remains and a military identification tag from one of the other missing servicemen were obtained from a Vietnamese refugee. Between 1993 and 1999, joint U.S./S.R.V. teams, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), conducted three investigations in Ho Chi Minh City and two investigations in Quang Nam-Da Nang Province (formerly Quang Nam Province). A Vietnamese citizen in Ho Chi Minh City turned over a military identification tag bearing Howes' name and told the team he knew where the remains of as many as nine American servicemen were buried. He agreed to lead the team to the burial site. In 1994, the team excavated the site and recovered a metal box and several bags containing human remains. In 2006, the remains of three of the four men were identified and buried. No remains could be attributed to Howes given the technology of the time. In 2008, given advances in DNA technology, the remains were reanalyzed. Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used dental comparisons and mitochondrial DNA – which matched that of Howes' sister and brother—in the identification of the remains. 1. Re: [HOWES] Howes/McClinton ......Col. Seth B. McClinton
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: yorkies2006 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.howes/461.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Col. Seth B. MacClinton Commended I am one of the executors of the estate of Amy Howes, late widow of Seth B. Howes, of Brewster, N.Y. I wish publicly to express my appreciation of the fair way in which Col. Seth B. McClinton, of 15 Park Row, New York, settled his claim against the estate. Col. McClinton was born at 19 Glynn St., Vauxhall, in London, October 2nd, 1874, the son, of William McClinton, a musician, and Eliza Hannam McClinton, a niece of Mrs. Howes. Thirteen children were born to these parents. The mother had married at seventeen. The father was at times out of work. In 1878 Mr. and Mrs. Howes were going through London and visited Mrs. Howes' sister, Miss Maria Mozley. At Miss Mozley's house, they saw and took a fancy to the boy Seth, then about four years old, and brought him to America on what was supposed to be a temporary visit. His mother did not like to give him up, but her family of five at home was too much for her. One other child, Amy Eliza, now Mrs. Allen Bird, was living awa! y from home with Mrs. Howes' sister, Miss Maria Mozley. Seth never went back until he went over as an officer in the 369th Colored infantry during the World War. He rendered distinguished service, receiving the French Croix de Guerre, and the Congressional Silver Star. Seth came to Brewster and lived with Mr. and Mrs. Howes until young manhood. I have learned they talked of adopting him. He made a formal claim that he was an adopted son of Mrs. Howes or had been promised adoption. He had no adoption papers. He was naturalized under the name of Cecil McClinton in 1896. So far as I know he had not put in his claim, when Mr. Howes died in 1901. His sisters, Mrs. Jane M. Charles and Mrs. Amy Eliza Bird, and other relatives were interviewed in England by our lawyer, the late Ray F. Barnum. Mrs. Charles remembered the day Seth was born and the day he left England. She was fourteen years old then he left, and hid her little brother Seth in a wardrobe to keep him from leaving. He would have failed to prove his claim, I believe. However, he could have delayed us and kept legacies for some time from people who were getting older or already old, for at least he might have got some jurors to sympathize with him, then a disagreement, then a second trial, etc. He withdrew on our agreement to pay as his lawyer fees and expenses $1,500. Col. McCllnton's daughter received a legacy under Mrs. Howes' will. The fact that Mrs. Howes made a wide distribution of her estate among many relatives and charitable institutions may have influenced Col. McClinton to withdraw his claim. At the time of the settlement I told Col. McClinton I intended to publish such a statement, and even at this late date, wish to do so. (Signed) HENRY H. WELLS.Brewster, N.Y.
