Has anyone else looked into the existence of Anna Haurin? She was a contemporary of Hans, Ulrich, and Jacob in Pennsylvania and so could figure into our ongoing discussions about the relationship of Jacob to Ulrich. Anna was clearly a Hauri. The -in ending was a typical way of writing the names of German women in this time period. Anna was a Lutheran, like Jacob. On 14 October 1743 she (as "Nani Haurin") was sponsor to a Lutheran baptism, Maria Heiser, daughter of Valentin and Anna Heiser, at the Augustus Church in Trappe, Pennsylvania. The other sponsors were Rev. Heinrich Melchior Mühlenberg ("The Patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America") and his wife Anna Maria. [information from Mühlenberg's journal] There were two Valentin Heisers, perhaps father and son. The father of Maria Heiser's died before her christening (before 14 October 1743). The other -- get this -- married "Anna Howin" on 26 May 1747 at the Augustus Church (both were stated to be of the Reformed religion). If I'm interpreting these entries correctly, Anna Hauri was probably godmother to her fiance's infant sister. Previously a Lutheran, she became a Calvinist and married the younger Valentin. (Or, was there only one Valentin and she was godmother to his daughter, then married him after his wife did?) I discovered recently that Mühlenberg's journal gives a bit more on Valentin Heiser. Valentin didn't live long after marrying Anna Hauri. In a lengthy entry, Mühlenberg's journal says that Valentin left off farming and rented a well-known inn, then was killed while watching a horse race when an Englishman lost control of his horse and ran down Valentin. Valentin left a widow [Anna Hauri] and small children. Valentin was buried 7 Aug 1753 at the Mennonite Meeting House cemetary in Skippack "because he lived nearby." Jacob Howry had children baptized at Lutheran churches in York Co, Pennsylvania in 1739 and 1743, while Anna was a godmother in 1743 and young wife in 1747. Jacob and Anna seem to have been the same generation and were both Lutherans. I suspect that they were siblings, whatever their relationship to the other Hauris in Pennsylvania. (Pat Sorensen's arguments are gradually bringing me around to a different view -- not quite hers, but a change for me -- that Jacob might have been a brother of Hans and Ulrich, and perhaps Anna was sister to all three.) As further speculation, I wonder if we might find records of Jacob (or of their widowed mother?) at Trappe in Montgomery Co 1737-1739. If anyone has further info, I'd love to hear about it.
