Was a dealer in farm implements, buggies and later cars. Lost his shirt in the depression and turned to farming on the 40 acres he owned in Erhart, Medina County, Ohio. Had a illness in the 1940's relating to his kidneys and was bedridden for several years. Made a recoveryin late 1940's and built a house for Claribel on Erhart Road. Was raised in Kansas by aunt Jenny Huntley Bemis (Mrs. Henry Eveleth Bemis). Jenny taught her to play the piano. She returned to her parents as a teenager and was an itinerant piano teacher, traveling by horse to her pupils homes. When her favorite horse was frightened, it bucked her and then walked to her side, stepping on her elbow and crushing it. She had a pin placed in her arm in 1905. Prior to surgery, doctors gave her a choice of having her arm permanently straight or bent perpendicular to the ground. She said she chose the bent position so she could continue to play the piano ant to be able to hold her future children. This is believed to have been the first surgery of its kind in the United States.
