Hi Sammie and all, I would like to make a correction to my earlier message regarding the parents of Maria ROOSEBOOM. I now understand her parents were (Henrick Jans) John ROSEBOOM and Femmetie (Phoebe) VAN NESTE. This new information was given to me by Pat Sorensen and I have the greatest confidence in her studies as she has traced this family for over 30 years. Now, about the "rowdy" members of the family. In the case of the murders of David HOWERY's sons, it appears they were the "good guys" in this case. It would seem that David found one of his neighbors in David's corncrib one night raising corn in an easier way than in obeying the old commandment by tilling a field and producing it. It seems that David made know what had transpired and this led to the neighborhood feud. It also seems that the boys who fired the shots had been permitted to grow up in a sort of moral darkness. (At least, that is how it is worded in a Warren County, Iowa history book.) In fact, the HOWERY boys were going home from a church meeting on a Saturday evening when they were accosted by the "bad guys". The fellows who fired the shots were arrested and convicted of murder but, if my memory serves me, the convictions were overturned and I believe the charges were dropped or they were found innocent.
