Sec. 1, Chap IX. "The Hauris came from Switz. The name is of Germanic origin. Die Deutschen Families Namen defines the name as `ein uber lauter Mensch (sudd),' translated as 'one ever loud man or personage' or `a high 1-Spirited person.' The "America Germanica" V. 4, 1902, published an article written by Dr. Oscar Kuhns, studies in "German Family Names", p. 305, explains that the name Hauri is from two stems, - (Hug + hart) that the stem Hug means mink, spirit; Dr. Kuhns neglects to define the stem hart which may be defined as hard, sharp, or severe, thus a sharp minded or high spirited person is derived. Following the usual anglicizing of Hauri, `au' becomes `ow' or `ou', and `ri' becomes `ry', we have the anglicized form Howry. This form of spelling is the most prevalent today and is the form used in this book except for the first and second generations which are called Hauri. The early assessment lists have spelled the name Haure, Haurich, HAURY, Howery, Howrey, while the first US census (1790) lists them a Hourey. The records of the Lancaster Court House are indexed as Howry."/ --- ^ Ref. "Deutsche Namenkunde" by Max Gottschald, UNM Library CS2545 G6. Hauri: 1. The three enduring wings of Anabaptism were: Swiss Brethren, Hutterian Brethren and (Dutch) Mennonites. In the 1690's the Swiss Brethren split into two groups the Amish & Mennonites. Ref. Mennonite Encyclopedia, p.4 & 5.: In the 17th century Kulm became the center of the Swiss Brethren movement in the Wynen Valley. Heinrich Muller had come this far on his journey of propaganda, & persuaded many to emigrate to Moravia. We find familiar names among them & their relatives, such as Hans HAURY of Hirschtal (had to pay a fine of 100 pounds for his sister),---. [FWH note: assumed to be Hans HAURY the wool weaver.] Ref. Mennonite Encyclopedia, p 5.: After the Thirty Years' War only a few traces of the Anabaptist movement were found in Aargau. Among the names recorded are Martin Burger of Burg in Reinach, Rudolph Kuenzy at Murgren, Bernhard Rohr at Uerkheim, Datwyler in Offringen, Hans Dester and Jacob Gut, who was banished Sept. 10, 1660. The rest of the Swiss Brethren also left their homeland & emigrated to Alsace and the Palatinate (especially in 1671). Those who remained rallied around the Bachmann family in Bottwyl & the HAURY family in Waldgraben. Most of these took part in the great emigration of the Swiss Brethren in 1711 to the Palatinate & the Netherlands. In the region of Zofingen they were found later than anywhere else. [FWH note: ? Was the Waldgraben HAURY family that of Hans HAURY the wool weaver?] --- ^ Ref. Mennonite Encyclopedia p. 679: HAURY (Hauri), a Mennonite family stemming from the Aargau, Switzerland. Since a very early date the Hauri family living in Hirschtal, Lenzburg district (as distinguished from the Hauri family living in Reinach), belonged to the Swiss Brethren. After the Thirty Years' War a number of HAURYs, under the pressure of persecution to which they were subjected in Switzerland, emigrated to South Germany. On one of the four boats that left Switzerland for the Netherlands in 1711 there was a weaver by the name of Hans HAURY from Hirschtal and his family. There are still numerous bearers of the name in Switzerland, South Germany, and North America. The Ancestor of the Mennonites among them is Jakob HAURY, presumably a descendant of the above Hans HAURY, who came as a farmer from Bruchhausen near Mannheim to the Bolanderhof near Kirchheimbolanden (Palatinate) in 1745 & married the widow of Christian Stauffer. --- ^ Ref. Journal of Genealogy, March 1979, p. 33: 62. HAURY(Hauri). 17th Century Anabaptist name, in the Bernese Aargau (Gratz, Bernese Anabaptists 47). After 1648 to the Palatinate; in 1745 Jacob HAURY there; progeny to Bavaria, later to USA; 19th century arrivals to Illinois; now mostly in Kansas (Mennonite Encyclopedia II: 679-680). Swiss forms: Hauri (Hirschtal, Ct. Aargau). Hauri and Houri in Ct. Luzern (Historisch-Biographisches Lexikon der Schweiz (7 vols. & Supplement). --- ^ Edward Bowman Espenshade supposed the two immigrants to Lanc. Co., Pa. from Amsterdam `Ulrich Hauri & Hans Hauri' were sons of Hans Hauri the wool weaver from Hirschtal, Switzerland. Espenshade refers to Henry Frank Eshleman's book "Historic Background and Annals of Swiss & German Pioneer Settlers of South Eastern, Pa." published in 1869 which states that Hans Hauri, wool weaver with a wife & two sons from the judicial district of Lenzburg arrived in the upper Palatinate in 1709. Lensburg is located in the canton of Aargau in northern Switz.. What Hans Hauri did was to move over the border into the less unfriendly Upper Palatinate of Germany in 1709. On p 185 (ibid.) is the statement that "Hans Hauri, wool weaver with a wife and two sons arrived in 1711 at Amsterdam, Holland." On p. 191 (ibid) it says that "We find Hauri among those who eventually reach Lanc. Co., Pa. and that (while Muller does not trace any of these emigrants of 1711 to Lanc. Col, Pa.). Many of them reached the county." For many of the names listed by Eshleman, the ages & names of wives an children are given but unfortunately there is no mention of age or other name than Hans Hauri in these references. Espenshade states: I.D. Rupp's "Collection of 30,000 names of German, Swiss, Dutch, French and other Immigrants to Pa." (1727-1775) lists Ulrich as being in Lanc. Co. Pa. in 1709, however Ulrich is believed to have arrived on the "Mary Hope" 9-23-1710 at the port of Phila. Espenshade states that it seems that Ulrich Hauri arrived in 1711 or very soon afterwards, & that Hans Hauri arrived at the port of Phila sometime before he entered his land in 1717. Estimated arrival date about 1715. (Espenshade comment: Hans Hauri, the wool weaver at Amsterdam in 1711 may or may not have come to America. It seems more likely that Ulrich Hauri & Hans Hauri whose names appear in the early land records are the two sons of the Hans HAURY, the wool weaver. If we had access to the records of the "Committee of Foreign Needs, preserved in the Archives of the Mennonite Church at Amsterdam", it is possible the HAURY identity could be definitely established.) Two copies of a "HAURY" coat of arms, prepared by Halberts, 3687 Ira Road, Bath, Ohio 44210, exist. One provided by Edward W. HAURY 515 S. Market St., Sparta IL 62286. One furnished by Mrs. Robert A HAURY, 815 Santa Fe, Newton, KS 67114. Mrs. Daniel E. HAURY Sr., National Park, New Jersey, furnished a hand drawn copy of a similar coat of arms as representative of the John W. HAURY family from France. The primary difference is the H used in quadrant-1. The H on the John W. HAURY coat of arms is similar to the H which my father (Frederick Wilhelm HAURY) engraved on silver. The color schemes are the same on the HAURY coat of arms prepared by Halberts. Authenticity and source of the HAURY coat of arms prepared by Halberts is unknown. --- ^ A photo and a sketch of a HAURY crest was received from John G. HAURY 7906 Circle Crest Road, Louisville, Ky. 40222. John's brother Douglas obtained this crest by mail order. John's comment "It is probably a fake". Authenticity and source of this crest is unknown. The Hauri von Reinach I crest, dated 1586 from the Statsarchiv of Kanton Aargau, Switzerland, was furnished by Emil W. HAURY of Tucson, AZ. He received it from a Zurich, Swiz. anthropologist colleague. Coats of Arms appear to have originated in the 13th Century, to identify the bearer during battle. Use became a status symbol. Coats of arms were bestowed upon persons & families by kings & rulers for special deeds, acts, loyalty & for favors. The status symbol aspect grew & some rulers granted (sold) coats of arms for money or items of monetary value. Details on a coat of arms had standardized meanings. Kings had experts to record, monitor & assure compliance. The helmet indicated degrees of royalty or court status. The direct front view of the knights head = sovereign princes with six bars. A profile with five bars = all degrees of peerage. An open helmet front view = baronets or knights. A profile with closed beaver = esquires and gentlemen. The beaver is the eye-guard or opening in front of the helmet. A mantling of gules doubled argent was for persons under the rank of peers. A gules doubled ermine mantling designated peers, all persons in the nobility rank. Gules is red. Argent is silver or white. Ermine is white powered with black tufts. Muhlrad (mill-wheel): The cogwheel originally meant fate, later it became the emblem for mechanics or industry. Mountains indicate strength, firmness, constancy, meditation spiritual strength, eternal righteousness. The Rose = regal beauty, love, wisdom, charm, grace, fidelity. The red rose martyrdom, or deep love. The leaf = hope. Yellow = the sun, goodness, enlightenment, inspiration, supreme wisdom. Gold = joy, benevolence, fruitfulness, faith, goodness of God. Orange-yellow = hospitality and revealed faith. Red = courage, strength, vibrancy of life, love, valor, patriotism, creative power, hardiness, royalty, youth, Christian zeal, ministry, fervor. Green = hope, regeneration, resurrection, believer, freshness, youth, hope, live, vigor, merit, bountifulness, prosperity. The Jahrhundert halbrunder schild (Century half-brother shield) is formed by a top 1/2-square joined to a bottom 1/2-circle. The circle radius equals a side of the square. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
