    2. I believe I am descended from Catherine Hess who married John Howery, born c. 1778. Is Catherine the same as Caty? I don't know who Christine Hartman and Margaret Hydenrich are -- where do they fit into the Howery line? Would appreciate any information you can share. Thanks, Ellen Justin C.S. 3. Hi Marie, Welcome to the Howery list. Are Ernest Edmund and Joseph Ernest both Howerys? I estimate your John Howery to have been born about 1888. Do you know or can you find out what county in Iowa your Howery's came from? I have Howerys who came from Warren Co, Iowa to Butler Co, KS about 1900. Let us hear from you. 3. The following information was sent to me by Bonnie Robillard as part of her extensive notes on the Howry family. I have two questions for all of you about this info. 1. What is the source for the name "Kathreen"? The only primary source I have, her marriage record, calls her Caty, which I have assumed is short for Catherine. Indeed, Catherine might have been her real name, but Kathreen looks like it must have come from an original record somewhere. 2. What is the source for the name Elizabeth for the wife of Jacob Sr.? "The Howery family most likely immigrated about 1709/1711. They were called Pennsylvania Dutch, most likely German. My Great Great Grandfather, David Howery, born about 1820-25, was the son of Jacob Howery and Kathreen Hess of Montgomery County, Virginia, Daughter of Henry Hess. Story has it that Jacob was delivering slaves down the Ohio River and never came back. Kathreen Hess Howery and her four grown sons went to Wisconsin without Jacob. These sons were, David/Davidson , our grandfather, John, Shirley Danz's Great Grandfather, Thomas, and Charles. who immigrated to Okatooks, Canada. I have been in contact with a descendant here in Canada. Her son James may already have been there. Jacob was the son of Michael Howery and Christeen Hartman of Virginia. Michael was the son of Jacob Howery born 1741 and Elizabeth ____ of Paradise York, Pennsylvania. Michael was a brother to Pat Sorenson's Samual Howery . This family moved from Pennsylvania to Botefourt County, Virginia. They had a town named for him. Howrytown, now Greenfield. The county lines moved around and you will find them in Montgomery, Franklin and Botefourt. Our Michael died in Montgomery County Virginia. Jacob, born in 1741, was the son of Jacob and Barbara of Strasburg, Langcaster, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Ulrich Howery (Haurie) who was the son of Hans Hauri of Canton, Aargdu, Switzerland." 3. Sammie, I'm sorry to be so long in replying to your message. I was hoping that someone else would jump in with some answers to your questions. I'm not a descendant of this line, so I'm not sure how accurate my information is. I have no death date for Mary Sifford, but assume that she died before Samuel married Maria Roseboom. My notes assign all of Samuel's children to his second marriage. I don't have even a guess about your other questions, although they point to some good research projects :) Have you been in touch with Pat Sorenson about this line? > -----Original Message----- > From: Max & Sammie Leap [mailto:thewoods@yuba1.yubacoe.k12.ca.us] > Sent: Thursday, March 26, 1998 10:44 PM > To: Justin C.S. 1. RE: Howery (an uncommon name)
    2. Justin C.S. Howery
    3. Hi Miranda. It's always great to hear from other Howerys. You may already know that we are all descendants of two men, Hans and Jacob Howry, who settled in Pennsylvania in the 1700s. Most of us who spell the name Howery are descendants of the Jacob Howry who founded Howrytown, Virginia in the 1790s. Jacob's ancestors came to America from Switzerland in the early 1700s. Our name was originally spelled Hauri, an Alemannic (south-western German) word that means a person who talks too loudly. The first Hauri was Ulrich Hauri, who is mentioned with his wife Rechenza as a tenant of the monastery of Beromuenster in 1312. Our coat of arms is a blue shield with a white dove. The simplicity is typical of Swiss coats of arms. If you or any other Howerys are interested in genealogy you might want to subscribe to HOWERY-L, a free electronic mailing list for Howery genealogy. 3. Ahha!!! I never knew that Samuel Howery was married prior to Maria Roseboom! I thought he married Maria Roseboom at a late time in life but never gave a thought of his marriage to Maria as being a 2nd marriage. I have some Questions: Did Samuel Howery and Mary Sifford have children? If so, which ones? Did Mary Sifford die or was there a divorce? Did Samuel have any of Mary's children in his household at the time of the 1830 Shelby County census? If so which of them did Mary Sifford give birth to and which ones did Maria Roseboom give birth to? Did Jacob Howery follow/go at the same time as David King Howery to Warren Co., Iowa in the late 1840's? There is a J. Howery listed with two 40 acre parcels in close proximity to David in the 1872 Warren County, IA Atlas. Was this Jacob Howery? This might be a clue to Jacob's relationship with David. Which might lead to his relationship to Samuel. Where was Jacob living when he died? Am I not full of questions? I haven't yet "documented" any of my Howerys. I haven't even documented my David Howery with public records yet. It was a "Given",(i.e.,understood) as he was in family history records passed from generation to generation. I will send for David's Death Record which should prove (but only if his children knew) his parentage. Hope to hear from some of you soon, later, Sammie Leap Justin C.S. Howery wrote: > > Hi Ron. One was born 1814 and one was born 1816, although the info that's circulating among Howery researchers has them both born on different dates in 1814. 3. Hi Sammie, and welcome to the list! We're a pretty small group so far but growing. The only addition I can make to your list of Samuel's children is Jacob Howrey, born 11 Feb 1814. He married about 1836 Sarah Elvira Thomas. They had at least one child, Sarah Ellen Howrey, born 24 March 1850, married 1867 Jacob Reid Fox, and died 3 July 1917 in Shelby Co, Indiana. My source for this information is Ellen Scheffler, EScheffler@gnn.com (1996). However, gnn.com is now out of business (merged with aol.com, I believe). I tried to send an email to Ellen a few weeks ago but it bounced. No such address. I tried a followup using Escheffler@aol.com. It didn't bounce but I also didn't hear back. The acknowledged expert on the Samuel Howry line is Pat Sorenson. The last address I have for her is 534 N. Township Rd, Yuba City, California 95991. I also have an email address for her (psorenson@jps.net) but several messages to that address have bounced in the past few weeks so it might not be valid any longer. I'll try doing a cc: of this message to her and see what happens.
