Hello, everyone! I find it very interesting that those 2 Howrey brothers were involved in that shoot-out. My Howry family came to Wyreka/Powersville, Putnam Co., MO (right next to the Iowa border). In talking with a historian in Meridian, ID, I found out that the "Howry boys" had quite a reputation. Evidently, about 1/2 the town of Powersville, MO picked up and moved to Hunter/Meridian, ID. Anyway, this historian told me that when the "Howry boys" rode into town, everyone else went back inside their houses. Considering my Howry family...these brothers/cousins would have stood 6'+ (some up to 6'8") That was extremely tall, especially for 1890s/turn-of-the-century. Add to that some 3" roping boots and a hat, and the fact that their build was extremely slim/wirey (not stocky at all)... that sounds like a fairly intimidating picture riding into town. It's my understanding that they were known for being quite a wild bunch, too. Their sister, my great-grandmother, stood 5'11"!! [Elsie Zona HOWRY PEER, b. 1887 Powersville, Putnam Co., MO] All of these details makes things so much more interesting!! Take care! -- Amelia Reimer-Davisson Port Angeles, WA
Hi Larry, and everyone else I figured by now everyone would be LOL about "Miss Rosybone". HawxSakQBs@aol.com wrote: > > HOWERY. The death certificate stated that David had lived in Whitewater for 19 years (so he came to Whitewater KS about 1903.) I know for a fact that his daughter Charlotta J. and her husband Richard F. LEAP moved from Warren Co., IA to Bancroft, Cuming Co., NE by 1886 and lived there until Jan of 1890 because of birth records for two of their children. Then the Leap family was in Whitewater, KS by at least 1909 because Charlotta J.Howrey Leap died there in October of 1909. I've always wondered if David and Elizabeth went to NE with them and then they all moved to KS. There are no 1890 census! I have not examined the 1900 census. >I am aware his > daughter, Della, was married to Harry EDRIS and lived in Lincoln, Nebraska so > I had assumed my earlier information was correct. I concure with the name ROSEBOOM even though I have not seen the marriage certificate. "Miss Rosybone" just isn't correct! And thanks for the tip as to who her parents might have been. > I assume you are aware, but I will tell you in case you are not, that six of > David's children are buried in the North River Cemetery in Warren County, > Iowa. I knew about George and John. Someone so kindly shared the pages about the "Tear Down Murders" from The History of Warren County. However, I don't believe I have all of David's Children. Let me list what I have and maybe you can help fill in for me. I Have: 1. Nancy A. Howrey 1848-1889 married Vincent Young 2. Mary E. Howrey 1850-1852 infant 3. Charlotta J. Howrey 1852-1909 married Richard F. Leap 4. George M Howrey 1854-1876 murdered 5. John M. Howrey 1854-1876 murdered 6. Emma Howrey abt 1863 7. Ida Howrey abt 1865 8. William Howrey abt 1867 9. Saul Howery abt 1870 Besides Della, who else am I missing? Also, In the Green Valley cemetery in Furley, KS is listed a Franklin HOWREY b 26 Aug 1893 d 5 Feb 1973 and a Nola I. HOWREY b 20 Dec 1906 d 23 Jul 1984 (I am assuming this Nola is Franklin's spouse.) Franklin has to be a Grandchild of David and Elizabeth's because I don't believe in 1893 Elizabeth was in the baby making business anymore. Thanks for sharing, Sammie
Hi Sammie, Thanks for sharing the information on the death certificate of David King HOWERY. I am really pleased to find where he resided as I had understood he went to Nebraska and had always looked for him there. I am aware his daughter, Della, was married to Harry EDRIS and lived in Lincoln, Nebraska so I had assumed my earlier information was correct. His mother's maiden name has been a problem for a lot of people. I believe she was the daughter of Hendrick ROSEBOOM and Rachel SMALLEY. Her Butler County, Ohio marriage certificate lists her name as Maria ROSEBOOM. I assume you are aware, but I will tell you in case you are not, that six of David's children are buried in the North River Cemetery in Warren County, Iowa. Two of them, George and John, were shot to death during a neighborhood feud that escalated into a gun battle. Another daughter, Emma, is buried in the nearby Carlisle Cemetery. Larry E. Warren
Hi everyone, Well I finally received David King HOWERY's death certificate and I promised to share. Some very interesting information, some erroneous I believe. Full Name = David K. HOWREY (Male, White, Married) Date of Birth = December 11, 1827 Place of Birth (City or Town) = Shelby, Indiana Date of Death = February 28, 1924 Age at Death = 96 Yrs, 2 Mo, 17 days. Wife = Elizabeth HOWREY Cause of Death = Cerebral Hemorrhage or apoplexy. Place of Death = Whitewater, Milton Township, Butler Co., KS Burial = Green Valley March 1, 1924 Name of Father = Samuel HOWREY Birthplace of Father = Kentucky Maiden Name of Mother = Miss ROSYBONE Birthplace of Mother = Unknown Informant = (sig) Velman HOWREY Address of Informant = Whitewater, Kansas Just a few of my observations: Note the spelling of HOWREY throughout the document. I don't know who the informant, Velman HOWREY, was. A grandson maybe? Note that he says Samuel HOWREY was born in Kentucky. I was never aware that Samuel was ever in KY let alone born there! Then, Miss ROSYBONE sounds like mischievous grandchildren teasing grandmother Howrey. Or, maybe teased by Samuel and the children/grandchildren truly thought her maiden name was Rosybone. Or, maybe the informant knew what he was talking about and her name was ROSYBONE. Your guess is as good as mine! Sammie
I messed up here and have gotten several e-mails about this, so I think I'd better send a message to the list. Edward Howrey's Samuel is clearly the same Samuel under discussion. Same marriage to Maria Roseboom, same list of children, etc. I was asking about Edward Howrey's statement that Samuel had a wife Sarah. Edward Howrey's notes don't mention Samuel's wife Mary Sifford. When I reported that Edward Howrey called Samuel a son of Jacob Howry and Susannah Wax, I meant to indicate that his information was not entirely trustworthy. I just didn't write clearly. I expected everyone else to make the same leap I did - that since Samuel was not the son of Jacob Howry and Susannah Wax, Samuel also might not have had a wife named Sarah. Sorry for the confusion. Hi Larry & all, Maybe I should read all my messages before I start answering any of them. Thank you Larry for sharing your research on Samuel Howery and his families. The information about the children born to 1st wife Mary Sifford certainly answers a lot of questions for me. Happy to hear you are researching Warren Co., IA also. Yes, David King Howery is my husband's line and I concure with all the data you shared about him. However, see my p.s. below. We are still awaiting his death certificate. Should be in the mail as Kansas Vitals has cashed my check. I will share with all of you whatever information is on that document. If indeed they sent one. <:( Now I have one thing that I would like to address (Others have shown these same dates as well and I believe I tried discussing it on the list some months ago) and that is: Julia Ann was born 30 Oct 1813 and then 5-1/2 MONTHS later Isaac is born 15 April 1814. Someone help us out here! Is there anyone of us researching Isaac? Sammie Dobbins, CA p.s. Family history notes show David's birthyear as 1828, David's tombstone shows 1826, other researchers show 1827. We'll see what his children reported on the death certificate.

Hi Sammie & all, Saw your memo to Larry about Julie Ann & Isaac. If anyone can help out on this issue let me add (2) more names to the pot. On the tombstones in Liberty Cemetery in Shelby Co, IN are Jacob Howery b: 11 Feb 1814 and Jane (Howery) Alexander b: 11 Apr 1814. If this is something someone has already worked through, I could sure use the help. Julia Ann Howery b: 30 Oct 1813 Jacob Howery b: 11 Feb 1814 Jane Howery b: 11 Apr 1814 Isaac Howery b: 15 Apr 1814 All of these people appear to be children of Samuel Howery. Ibersheim or "Hof Ibersheim is the neighbo-village of Hamm & was a pure Mennonite settlement, when all the Swiss exhalants arrived - similar to Weyerhof & Bolanden. In Ibersheim I met Pfarrer Habegger of the Mennonite community. He is Swiss citizen, & immigrated in one of the last 20 years, during our century. He is not from the Aargau, but his nationality shows that there still is contact to the Swiss Mennonites. Pfarrer Habegger tried to help me, but knew nothing about the time before 1743 (when Jacob HAURY must have lived in Hamm.) The facts are: Local protestant church- records of Hamm, where the Hof Iberheim belonged to, Mennonites are bearly not mentioned. Mennonites themselves wrote nothing in registers. They had none by reasons of fear. They did not want to be registered by other people. What we know is only the following matter: 1.) In the 17th century about 100 Mennonites belonged to the community center in Ibersheim. But only 2- or 3- families lived in Hamm. 2.) The first Mennonites in Ibersheim arrived from Switzerland in the year 1661. 3.) We know the names of the first 10 settlers, which are published by Walter Ellenberger in the book "325 Jahre Mennonitengemeinde Ibersheim". 22 years later in 1683 we find a new list of the 12 "Bestaender" (farmer). Between them is no HAURY but Hans Jacob Fuhry. I studied the names registers of Switzerland (6 volumes with the names of all citizens since the 17th century) & found, that the name Fuhry is completely unknown in Switzerland. So I hoped "Fuhry" would be one of the many mistakes of the Heidelberg administrators, when they tried to write "HAURY". But now I suppose, that FUHRY still a mistake means "Forrer". A family "Forrer" from Switzerland belonged to the farmers in Ibersheim, & there was a Hans Jacob Forrer in all other lists before & after 1683. So we must return to the 18th century as the oldest time when HAURY appeared in documents in the Palatine (Burchhausen, Bolenden or Hamm). Result: The HAURY family did not belong to the first Mennonite settlers of 1661 or 1683. They arrived between 1685 & 1724. We do not yet know, when in the 40 years. After the visit to Ibersheim I went to Hamm itself, where the protestant Pastor Hofmann tried to help us. He loaned me the "Chronicle of Hamm" & gave me as a present the book by A. Trieb: "Ibersheim am Rhein, Geschichte des Ortes:. I studied them both, but no HAURY appeared. That means, that until this moment there are only two fountains, of which I know, that they exist, but did not read yet. One is the Ortsarchiv of Hamm. It is contained in 20 large chests, stored in the Rathaus of Worms. Until the documents are unclassified, it is of no use to go there. The other book in the parsonage of Hamm, badly written, which is more or less a chronicle of all remarkable events like war & hail recorded by the pastor between community problems & the birth of illegitimate children. It is a task of several days, to study it. There could be something about Mennonites, but I am not sure. Before we can get notice of the Ortsarchive & the book, let us repeat, what the Mennonite Registers of Guth & Waldner tell us: We must begin with Hamm, mentioned in Bolanden in connection with the marriage of Christine Schmidt/Stauffer & your ancestor 32. Jakob Hauri died 1789 with 71 years & was born around 1718. He was ca 25, when he married, & he probably arrived in Bolanden few years before. About the place where he came from we learn by Mennonite lists 1737 Mennonites in Hamm: Johannes Frick, Heinrich Rohers widow, Jackob Haney (must be HAURY). 1738: Johannes Frick, wife, 3 children, 2 employed men. Heinrich Rohers widow, 2 children. Jakob Rohrer, wife, no children. Jakob HAURY, wife, 4 children. 1743: Heinrich Rohrers widow, 2 children. Johannes Rohrer, wife, 2 children. Johannes Fricks widow, 1 child. NO HAURY !! It is clear, that the names of 1737 meaned households. But the composition of the HAURY family can be seen only in the year 1738. - 1743 they all had gone. If they all had died by a pest, the pastor would have noted. So I think, that they moved, but where to? Consider the parents & 4-children. I mean Jacob, the father in Hamm 1737 & 1738 only can be the father of Jacob (No 32) in Bolanden. We may ask, whether No 32 is one of the 4-children. The word "Child" means only the relation- ship to the parents, it declares nothing about age. Even adult children still figure as children. When No 32 was born 1718, then he had 20 years of age in the record of 1738. It is known, that the commissions, who count the Mennonites sometimes needed 2-years until they returned to Heidelberg & wrote the records. Then Jakob, the son probably stood with his parents & brethren until he was 18. I imagine he belonged to the four in 1736/1738/1738, & he then probably did not take part, when his parents moved with the younger kids. But Jakob the son went his own way - probably towards Bolanden. Nothing is told about Jakob's the sons parents & brethren after 1738 with one exception: His brother Melchior dies in Bruchhausen & Jakob inherited his money the 15-10-1759. Probably the death of Melchior many years before 1759. Mennonite records at the only other HAURY site begin earlier than those of Hamm: Burchhausen 1724: Fwllmann & Hackmann, 2 wealthy farmer families. Bachmann, the weaver, no wealth. Jakob Schneyder (74 years) no wealth. Hans Haurich (HAURY?) dayworker, no wealth. 1738: Melchior HAURY, the older & wife. Melchior HAURY, the younger & wife. 1743: Melchior HAURY, with wife & daughter. 1751: Melchior HAURY's widow marries Johannes Graf. 1.) Hans is not wealthy. Because he arrived from Switzerland without his fortune?? Or because he is an old man & had no opportunity to take his own farm?? What we can imagine is: he did not belong to the generations of the brothers Jakob & Melchior, because in the year 1724 Jakob was only six. He probably was not so old like Jakob Schneyder, whose age 74 is expressively mentioned. I think that he belonged to the generation of Jakob's & Melchior's father. Jakob's father (No 64) married before 1718 & may have been born around 1690. This generation was about 35 in the year 1724. I must permite, that Hans even, if he was the father of No 64, had no such remarkable age, that the record of 1724 must mention it. Let us forget Hans, until we know more about him. 2.) The two Melchiors. The distinction "Older" & "Younger" can be used for father & son, but also for two cousins. That means the difference of age can be 25 years or more or only some weeks. In Bruchhausen we only can guess. For example, that the younger couple, which had no children in 1738 5-years later in 1843 had a daughter. They probably in 1738 just married. And it would be very practicable, if the older Melchiors were so old, that they died. But we must be careful with the age of the older one. He surely is not the father of the younger, because one of the Melchiors must be a son of Jacob (No 64) in Hamm. The older Melchior is a cousin or unkle of the younger Milchior. But what ever happened to one of the couples, since 1743 there is no choice anymore. It would be easy to suppose, that Melchior the younger was a brother of Jakob in Bolanden, that his wife & daughter died before he died, & that he left fortune to his brother. But all theories are nonsense, because Melchior's wife did not die. He died, & his widow married in the year 1751. That means, that the dead husband of the widow died 8 years before Jakob in Bolanden inherited, & that Jakob got the money instead of the widow. Impossible! Of course it is possible, that the other Melchior returned to Bruchhausen, lost his wife & then died himself. But we better end speculations until we know more. I am a little disappointed, that my search had no more results. It is difficult to decide, what to do next. My idea is to end our hitherto system, & you pay a fee & I run around until the money is spent. It will be better, that I try to find a new solution, & inform you & ask for a new fee. The solution does not depend only on good will. The ways are: 1.) Archive in Worms. I have no influence there. 2.) Chronicle in Hamm, maybe of use. 3.) Church records of Rohrbach near Heidelberg, probably enclose documents about Bruchhausen. 4.) Records in Schoftland/Hirschtal. In Schoftland I have another task, which obliges me to read the registers of 100 years line for line & page for page. Any little notice about Mennonites could not escape me. And after Schoftland I still can return to the Palatine. If ever I have the impression, that I can start again on the HAURY trail, I shall inform you at once. Hello Howery family, Just when the Howery line lights up like the fourth of July I came done with the flu and after seven hard days am back at my computer and glad to see so much good information flowing. Let me introduce myself as I have only written a few times before and new family are now out there. My mother was a Howery and got me started on research. Most of my information came from her as she liked to walk through cemeteries writing down names and dates. I could never figure out why she did that. I now understand. I come from the Indiana line of : Jacob Howery (11 Feb 1814 - 9 Dec 1885) m: Sarah (Sally ) Elvira Thomas (20 Feb 1820 - 6 Dec 1885) ch: George W. Howery (1 Jan 1844 - 11 Apr 1926) m: Clarissa Cook (4 Dec 1853 - 2 Dec 1904) ch: Alonzo (Lon) W. Howery (14 Jul 1875 - 30 Oct 1961) m: Margaret (Maggie) B. Fox (28 Apr 1879 - 26 Feb 1947) Jacob and Sarah had 13 children and I have information on them if anybody needs it. Jacob was born in Ohio according to the 1850,60,70 Indiana Census. I believe he is a son of Samuel Howery and Maria Roseboom. The 1820 Indiana Census of Franklin County shows: Samuel Howery . 310001 40010 Thats (3) males under 10 and (4) females under 10 (1) male 10-15, (1) male 45+, (1) female 26-44 I am attempting to confirm all the children of Samuel Howery with both Mary Sifford and Maria Roseboom. In 1820 Samuel had (8) children at home. It appears he had at least (5) more after 1820. Some of the children from his first marriage were probably married before 1820. He was a very productive individual. I have proofs on William, Daniel, Jane, Phebe & partial on Jacob. If someone out there is tied to one of Samuels other children, please let us know your source of proof so I can add them to my confirmed list. I am trying to document all the Howerys that came to Indiana and where they went from here. I am thankful to see some information on John George Howery in Dearborn County as I do not have anything but an 1820 Census record on him. Keep the information coming especially documented proof which I so dearly overlooked in my early research and my constantly kicking myself about. If I have repeated information, I am sorry. I have not yet had time to read all of the Howery mail yet but wanted to join in. Ron Oberle Greenfield, Indiana roby39@aol.com
Fred, if you'll ask me again this summer, I'll try to dig out the article and post it, along with a translation if I have one. I'm currently a student, guiltily stealing a few minutes here and there for genealogy. As much as I'd like to respond immediately, I just don't have time to dig out the article, type all that German, and try to polish up my translation for publication right now. Also, I do have information on several other Hauri coats of arms as used by different branches of the Swiss family in later generations (but not all of them!). I don't know what else to add, except that by far the majority of them were from the Reinach family, which provided so many Untervoegts [approx = deputy bailiff] to Reinach that they had more need of heraldry than the family in other villages. One major exception to the dove theme is the family at Zofingen, which used an owl perched on a demi millrind (bottom half of a mill-wheel). If anyone wants to see an illustration of the arms as taken from the Liber Vitae - albeit an extremely poor illustration - visit http://members.tde.com/jhowery/howery.html I apologize in advance for anyone who looks there and is disappointed by the quality. The color isn't good and there is no red on the dove's beak or legs. I should really get a better reproduction - just haven't had time. Better yet, perhaps one of these days I'll have my polaroid of that page of the Liber Vitae scanned. Justin C.S. These are the arms used about 1415 by one of the Canons Regular at the Collegiate Church of Beromuenster. The Beromuenster Hauris were the original stem-family of the Hauris at Sursee, Reinach, and Schoeftland, and probably also of the Hauris elsewhere in Canton Aargau. There is a beautiful illustration of these arms in the Liber Vitae of Beromuenster (a book in which the church recorded the names of those for whom the Canons said annual prayers of remembrance). Unlike many other European countries, the Swiss did not associate coats of arms only with the nobility. Almost every burgher family had a coat of arms (which is still true today). Every official of any sort had to have a coat of arms for use on his official seal. For the Hauris, there are quite a few variations of the above coat of arms as used by different descendants of the Beromuenster family in their various capacities over the centuries. Most of the variations have a blue shield, a white dove, and generally a few other objects (often a millrind, in allusion the the Hauri's traditional occupation of miller). As an interesting sidelight, I have a copy of an article (in German) that argues that the dove used by the Hauris was originally a gamecock (fighting rooster with his comb and wattle cut off) and that the arms were a visual pun on the name Hauri (= a too loud person). According to the article, poor draghtsmanship accounts for the rooster being turned into a dove over the course of successive drawings. I'm no authority on birds, but there might be some truth to this. When I showed my aunt the picture from the Liber Vitae she asked why in the world the coat of arms is a chicken. I then had the pleasure of explaining that it only looks like a chicken :) Justin C.S. Howery Denver, Colorado jhowery@tde.com http://www.members.tde.com/jhowery
As a small refinement on your very detailed information - The surname Hauri is from the Alemannic dialect of German (the dialect spoken in the southwestern part of Germany - Swabia - of which German Switzerland was a part), according Dr. J. J. Siegrist at the Staatsarchiv des Kantons Aargau. In Alemannic, the verb "hauren" means to speak loudly. The noun form, hauri, could be applied to a person who was loud, high-spirited, or a boaster. I asked Dr. Siegrist in one letter about other theories, including (a) that the name became attached as a surname to the town crier, (b) that the name became attached as a surname to the speaker or judge of a local court, and (c) that the name might be derived from hug+hart (see Fred's message below). Dr. Siegrist characterized these various theories as "nonsense." I asked one of my correspondents in Switzerland whether the name Hauri might actually be derived from the village of Hoeri, north of Zurich. The answer was that it is not possible on linguistic grounds. I'm totally clueless when it comes to understanding arguments about which sounds can change over the centuries into which other sounds, so I can't even guess why Hoeri could not change into Hauri. The earliest (possible) use of the surname (or a similar surname) was by "Chuondradus dictus Hoerinus" [Conrad called Hauri, or perhaps Conrad called Horn], a knight living at the Lazarite Commandery of Gfenn near Bern, named in a charter dated 13 April 1272. I question this information because the copy of the charter that I have does not have the extra "I" in his name (it's Hoernus not Hoerinus), so I think it would be more likely that it was the Latin form of Horn rather than the Latin form of Hauri. The next mention of the name is 10 years later in a charter dated 8 February 1282 at Steffisburg in Bern. This charter mentions "Chuondradus dictus Hovri" [Conrad called Hauri], a peasant who is mentioned again in 1308. There are scattered references to various Hauris in the Interlaken region of Bern (including Steffisburg) until 1336. These people might or might not have been related to one another. Also a 1299 reference to a Metzger Hauri, of Freiburg, who was killed during a war with his village and the Bishop of Strasburg. I haven't been able to identify this particular Freiburg (it's a common place name). I am not familiar with the theory that the surname originated in St. Gall. According to the Staatsarchivs des Kantons Bern and des Kantons Aargau, the family originated in Beromuenster and spread from there to the rest of German-speaking Switzerland. This statement might be a bit on the dogmatic side -- it looks to me like the Ulrich Hauri who lived at Beromuenter before 1313 (when his widow Rechenza had a grant from the church there) really came from the Interlaken region of Bern. Because the lords of Steffisburg (where several Hauris were mentioned during the preceding 30 years) were patrons of the church at Beromuenster and sent their younger sons to be Canons there, I think it is likely that Ulrich Hauri accompanied one of the von Steffisburg family to Beromuenster and settled there. From this time on, and particularly from the 1400s on, there are an increasing number of references to Hauris throughout German-speaking Switzerland and southern Germany. On a related topic, the -in ending was a common feminine form of most surnames throughout at least southern Germany, Switzerland, and Pennsylvania in the 18th century. I can't speak for earlier or later practices, or for northern Germany. A relevant example: A "Nani Haurin" [who must have been baptized "Anna Hauri" - Nani was a common nickname for Anna, Haurin was the feminine form of Hauri] married Valentin Heiser in 1747 at the Lutheran Church in Trappe, Montgomery Co, Pennsylvania (apparently as his second wife, since she was godmother to his daughter Maria Heiser four years earlier). It would be interesting to find out what relation she was to Hans, Ulrich, and Jacob! Justin C.S. In France, Suisse and Deutschland, I never find the various Hauru, Haura, Haurez, Hauro, Haurris, Haurris, Harris, Harry, Hauring. 3. Haurie is not a various of Hauri or Haury. We find this spelling only in the south/west of France near the Spain, that is this surname that mean forge in french. 4. Hauer is a German surname, no link with Hauri. 5. Howery and Howry are the English spelling of Haury because the W and the U in Suisse and also in Germany have the same pronunciation. In France we say HORI because AU is pronounced O. 6. Hauri is the spelling of the origin of our name in Suisse since 1300 and that is also the origin of the all Haury in the world, except the Haury from Charente in France who are spelled Horry or Hory before the 18th century. No link with our family. 7. I also find the Ory surname in Alsace but I never find a link with our name since the 16th century. I also find an other Haury family from the west of France for who the name was spelled Ory in 18th century and Oury before in 17th century. 8. I send with this mail a pedigree chart from Haury Peter born in Berg/Alsace the :3 October 1846, his ancestor was Hauri johannes born in about 1640 to Hirschtal (5042,Suisse, Canton de Bern), wife unknown at this time. The name is of Germanic origin. Die Deutschen Families Namen defines the name as `ein uber lauter Mensch (sudd),' translated as 'one ever loud man or personage'or `a high 1-Spirited person.' The "America Germanica" V. 4, 1902, published an article written by Dr. Oscar Kuhns, studies in "German Family Names", p. 305,explains that the name HAURI is from two stems, - (HUG + HART) that the stem HUG means mink, spirit; Dr. Kuhns neglects to define the stem HART which may be defined as hard, sharp, or severe, thus a sharp minded or high spirited person is derived. Following the usual anglicizing of HAURI, `au' becomes `ow' or `ou', and `ri' becomes `ry', we have the anglicized form HOWRY. This form of spelling is the most prevalent today and is the form used in this book except for the first and second generations which are called HAURI. The early assessment lists have spelled the name HAURE, HAURICH, HAURY, HOWERY, while the first US census (1790) lists them a HOUREY. Bonnie - Have you done much research in the Dane Co. area on the Howerys? I'd be interested in exchanging info with you if you have. After all, my great great grandfather William Thomas Howery was the nephew of your Davidson Howery! It's great to see all the activity on this list. I'm just beginning to sort out all the information available on the Howerys but really enjoy input from Justin and Fred. Thanks! connie

HAURY, born Abt. 1876 in GRAFTON, Lorain, Ohio; died 1954 in ,,Ohio. He was the son of 2. Jacob G. HAURY and 3. Mary M. HAMM. He married (1) Claribel HUNTLEY 1909 in ,,Ohio, U.S.A.. She was the daughter of Fred A. HUNTLEY and Cora Belle COOK. Notes for Jacob G. HAURY: Loved practical jokes. Played the "spoons". Claribel sometimes called him Yak-ob. Was a dealer in farm implements, buggies and later cars. Lost his shirt in the depression and turned to farming on the 40 acres he owned in Erhart, Medina County, Ohio. Had a illness in the 1940's relating to his kidneys and was bedridden for several years. Made a recoveryin late 1940's and built a house for Claribel on Erhart Road. Was raised in Kansas by aunt Jenny Huntley Bemis (Mrs. Henry Eveleth Bemis). Jenny taught her to play the piano. She returned to her parents as a teenager and was an itinerant piano teacher, traveling by horse to her pupils homes. When her favorite horse was frightened, it bucked her and then walked to her side, stepping on her elbow and crushing it. She had a pin placed in her arm in 1905. Prior to surgery, doctors gave her a choice of having her arm permanently straight or bent perpendicular to the ground. She said she chose the bent position so she could continue to play the piano ant to be able to hold her future children.
