    3. How about we call KY and TN (at least the eastern areas) the Appalachians? Part of VA also. But as to starting in the Appalachians, not if they came from the British Isles. They came there from somewhere else. Naming patterns are something else again and carry a lot of meaning in their own right. I have another line (CARTER) that started out as Quaker in PA, with typical Quaker naming patterns. They moved southwest, ended up in WNC, married into other lines and a whole 'nother pattern of given names emerged.
