Good morning, (Glad to see cousin Willie Smith back with us). I have a few tidbits to offer on the discussion of ancestors of the SouthWest Virginia Howells. I discovered in the library yesterday a book "Loudoun County Virginia Tithables, 1758-1786" which gives ,using { } to group in households 1762 {Hugh Howel, William Howel}, and {John Howel} 1765 {Hugh Howell}, and {William Howell} 1767 {Hugh Howell}, {Hezichiah Howell}, {John Howell, Charles Howell} 1768 {Hugh Howell, Abner Howell}, {Daniel Howell}, {Timothy Howell}, {John Howell, Jr.} 1769 {Hugh Howell, Andrew Howell, John Howell} When this is compared with the list given by Jeannette (on Tuesday), we can get a bit more information. For example, the Daniel Howell listed above could not be Hugh's son, since he would have been only 11 years old in 1768, and not old enough to be counted. Also, from the book Related Families of Botetourt County, VA by J. William Austin II and Rebecca H.R. Austin, in an addendum, there is a family history for Abner Howell. He was granted 329 acres on Wolf Creek, Botetourt Co., in 1794 also Charles Howell was granted 40 acres on Wolf Creek in 1795, adjoining Thomas Akers, David JAMES, and his own land. The authors speculate "Charles and Abner were probably brothers, for both served in Captain Rawlings Company of the Revolutionary Army, in 1787, as had Daniel and John Howell. Benjamin, Joshua and Daniel Howell had served in Captain Easom's Company." I am a descendent of John Calvin Howell of Grayson (1818-1905), son of Andrew Howell, listed in Joe Bowers email from last week. I'll post a separate message about some questions I have in relation to my (known) ancestors, and possible connections to the Hugh Howell family. andy graham
