I had always wondered what happened to James Howell as I could never find info on him. Most of the Putnam County records burned in 1899, so that would explain why you were unable to find much. The yanks burned it the first time in 1865, then it burned again in 1899. There are a lot of Stones in that area. One of the Rices married a Stone but they moved out to McCracken County, Kentucky by 1900. I think it was Joseph Douglas Rice who married a Stone, but not exactly sure. Anyway, I'd love to have more info on James Howell's family, as I had no info on his line. Please keep in touch!
