    1. Re: [HOWELL] Howell's of NJ and Loudon County, VA
    2. Hi Cousins and Will, If anyone can prove Hugh Howell was related to Benjamin Howell (1735-1799) then they will also be related to Joshua Howell (1745-1836). Benjamin oldest son Daniel was born in Philadelphia - 1856-1836. Joshua migrated from SW VA into Champaign Co, OH in 1808 and died in Delaware Co, IN in 1836. The name Tilman (Tighman) also is known in the Joshua line - a great grandson born in Delaware County, moved back to SC to his mother's area after the Civil War. His mother's name was Abigail Sumpter (Sumter) who was born in 1790. It was make quite a few people happy if we can establish the relationship of Benjamin and Joshua to someone - so far we can't connect them with anyone else. Anyone have Hugh's parents? Could there be a connection between Hugh and Elijah Howell of Laurens County, S.C.??? James Howell who married Jane Copeland in Grayson County, VA had a son named Elijah. If memory serves me correctly they moved West into Illinois. Interestingly, Elijah of S.C. had a son named Tilman Howell. John Howell (1788-1861) who married Nancy Brewer in Grayson County, VA had a son named Tillman C. Howell, born 1835 in White County, TN. Someone reported that Tillman's middle name was "Cantrell". Any proof of this? A Tillman Cantrell DID reside briefly in Warren county, TN, where John Howell's sister Drucilla (Howell) Hash lived (Rock Island). Drucilla was the wife of Thomas Hash. Hope someone can help us trace back beyond Montgomery County, VA. Thanks Will >>

    3. I find it interesting that Hugh would have sons named Daniel, Abner, Andrew, Benjamin, John, William, etc...which are precisely the same names we're seeing in the area of Montgomery, Bedford, and Grayson Counties. Perhaps he named his sons after BROTHERS??? Does anyone know who Hugh's parents were? I seem to recall he may also have been from the New Jersey area? I think we're onto something here...Funny how sometimes these things just sort of fall into our laps for us to digest and put together. I think the Elijah Howell I referred to earlier was in Laurens County, S.C., and his father John Howell was born in Virginia. Was this Ms. Sumter you mention here by chance in Laurens County, S.C.? If so, then we have a probable connection to Elijah Howell there as well.
