EXTRACTS FROM GEORGIA CONFEDERATE PENSIONS-HOWELL The following Confederate Pension Applications for Chattahoochee and Stewart Co, GA were extracted for HOWELL: JAMES L HOWELL-Age and Infirmity and Poverty Resides in Cusseta, Chattahoochee Co, Ga Resided in Chattahoochee Co all life, except 3 years in Alabama and 8 in Florida. Born 1823 Gwinnett Co, GA Enlisted 1862 Lumpkin, Ga in Stewart Co, Ga Co G 46th GA Was in company 6-8 months then transfered to Company D, Same Regiment Until War ended Surrendered with Lee. Got me a mule and came home Since 1865 farmed, except, 3 years kept store 1893 I owned a few acres of land in Florida. Sold same and invested in mule business in 1894. I owned nothing whatever except mules. Never married, have no children. Witness-G Wood King, next door neighbor who said he had known JL for 50 years. On 4 January 1897, J L says he has resided in Georgia all his life except 7 years in Alabama. He is age 73. On 1 Jan 1901 JL says he has resided continuously in Georgia since the __day of F__ 1844. He is age 78 JOSEPH A HEWELL/HOWELL of Chattahoochee Co, Ga. Has been a resident of Georgia since 2 December 1826 Enlisted as a Private in Company H 54th GA Vol Mercers Bde Wounded at Kenesaw Mountain 24 June 1864 by a ball entering temporal bone above the ear and ranged downward and after remaining 8 months the ball extracted from the side of the neck causing paralysis of the muscles on the left side of the face and producing a permanent deafness and almost total loss of sight in his left eye. There is continued discharge of pus from left ear which wound permanently disabled despondent and renders him practically incompetent to perform manual labor. Dated 16 Dec 1887. MRS ANNIE J HOWELL, of Lumpkin, Stewart Co, GA, widow of Henry Louis Howell. He was always called Louis. He died near Lumpkin (Stewart Co) Dec 19, 1886. She is age 72 (on 18 Aug 1910). She has lived in Georgia all her life. Married Dec 26, 1865 in Stewart Co, Ga Husband enlisted at Green Hill, Stewrat Co May 1862 in 3rd GA Calvary He surrendered April 1865 Greensboro, NC. He was captured one time in 1862, possibly in September in Tennessee. Was in prison in Louisville, KY and exchanged in about 2 months. Marriage Certificate-Henry L Howell and Annie J McKeathan. Married by J H Goss, MG Dec 26, 1856, Stewart Co, GA (note by MIC-I have two dates for the marriage of this couple. Need to check for correct date. One of the two is probably transposed)
