HOWELL. The seven-story facility had 100 rooms and was built at a cost of about $250,000, according to a report in the 31 August 1927 Eagle. Pg. 438 "First National Bank of Bryan is the county's oldest bank. ..But the forerunners of First National date back even farther. In Millican, in the early 1860s, Milton Parker and W.H. Flippen started a private bank, the county's first. In 1867, they moved on with the railroad to Bryan and continued the bank. Parker later sold his interest to Flippen, and Flippen later sold out to Guy M. Bryan, Jr., son of the town's founder, William Joel Bryan. Guy Bryan had started a private bank in 1873 in Bryan. After he acquired two partners, Major Frank Clarke and DR. J.W. HOWELL, the private firm was conducted as Clarke, Bryan and HOWELL. The three of them consolidated in 1886 with another private banker, J.S. Fowlkes, and that's when the bank was nationalized. Fowlkes became the first president. J.W. and R.W.
