There is a way to do this through ydna testing. This would take us back to a common mail ancestor and goes back many generations. I have had the testing done by dnafamilytree.com. If others in the families would have a male tested it would determine if we are related many generations ago. Although my ancestors came here from Britain, the dna analysis indicates that my background is Viking. Check out dnafamilytree.com. You will find it interesting. 3. Howell DNA testing has been done, at least for the descendants of Edward Howell, founder of Southampton, Long Island, New York. See article "The Ancestry of Jason Howell of Islip, New York" in New England Ancestors, Holiday 2002. DNA tests are currently being done to establish whether my line is descended from Edward Howell. The testing is being done by Family Tree DNA. 3. Bill, Colleen, all, Interestingly, my mother, whose grandmother was a HOWELL, always pronounced it HOW'LL (one syllable.) I had thought this was a personal idiosyncrasy or her Southern accent. But her own surname was SHELTON, and she was always careful to give both syllables their due in that name and took umbrage when some of her childhood friends did not. Such things as this have been the basis of changes in spelling. My mother never knew this grandmother, who died long before she was born, but she would have heard the pronunciation from her father.
