    1. [HOWELL] Howell of Wayne C9., NC

    3. Will, There were two John Howell's who died around that time in Wayne Co., NC. I have not seen evidence that our John Howell b. 1753 was a preacher. He was definitely in the Rev. War. We have papers that prove that. His War papers state that he was born May 29, 1753. We also know that he died 1843. I don't know who the John Howell "preacher" was. Our John Howell b. 1753 was not in Capt. Nathaniel Williams Battalion that I can see. It is not mentioned in his war papers. He was in Capt. Joseph Green's, Capt Thomas Grantham, and Capt. Boon. He lived on Falling Creek or something like like, and served in Capt. Nathaniel Williams 2nd N.C. Battalion during the Revolutionary War. He's the fellow my bunch claimed was John "Hamilton" Howell, who they claim is buried under a phoney DAR monument at Elrod Cemetery in White County, TN. I've proved beyond doubt that the man never left Wayne County, N.C., and is NOT our ancestor. Needless to say, some of the Howells up there in White County ain't too happy with me, preferring obviously to believe lying tradition over the truth as revealed in the actual documentation.
