    3. I haven't taken any offense at all, so please don't worry :-). Just wanted to give you what I had on this bunch of ours. I'm a transplanted Yankee myself, having been born in South Central Indiana in 1959 (though both parents are certified "Confederate Rebels" hee hee!) When the census takers asked "race" they told them "Confederate-Americans". Anyway......Seems this name Tabitha appears as a daughter of old James Howell of Old Town, Grayson County, Virginia. She was born 1792 or about that time, but I forget who she married. This would definitely tie in Old James born about 1760 as a brother of our George Howell, whom we are almost positive is the father of John Howell of White County. I found Calvin "Hewel" (Howell) on the 1812 White County taxlist. John Howell is for some reason listed twice, which has to be the case since there was no older John Howell living in White County. Ours are proven to have come directly from Grayson County, Virginia. Also is a William R. Cole, whom I believe refers to Richard Cole of Grayson County, VA. Richard's son, Isaiah Cole, married Honor Howell, daughter of George and Polly Howell, in Grayson County in 1804. Calvin Howell and Richard Cole witnessed the will of William Poole in 1807, the year Calvin married Barbara Rhudy. Richard's wife Sarah was the daughter of William Pool/Poole. Honor Howell Cole apparently died somewhere in Louisiana. I'd like to find out more about that line too. Her sister Drucilla Howell married Thomas Hash, who is given as a son of John Hash and Theodocia Sturgill. Thomas and Drucilla settled in Warren County by 1820, near Rock Island and are buried there. Thomas was accidentally killed in 1864 when a soldier's rifle misfired. So, thus far, I have as probable children of Capt. George Howell and Mary "Polly" Osborne: HONOR HOWELL- born circa 1784. Married Isaiah Cole, son of Wm(?)Richard Cole and Sarah Poole, 1804 Grayson County, VA. CALVIN HOWELL- born circa 1787. Married Barbara Rhudy , daughter of Jacob Rhudy,1807, Grayson County, VA. I believe Calvin returned to Virginia and possibly died there before 1818, as did Barbara, according to Jacob Rhudy's will of 1818, naming her children George Rhudy and Betsy Rhudy. JOHN HOWELL - born circa 1788. Married March 12, 1811 Grayson County, VA to Nancy Brewer, born February 27, 1792 Grayson County, VA, daughter of Lewis Brewer and Agatha Holland. He died 1861 White County, TN. She died about 1886 White County, TN. DRUCILLA HOWELL - born about 1792 Grayson County, VA. Married about 1809 to Thomas Hash, son of John Hash and Theodocia Sturgill (?). George Howell Jr. - married Ruth Cooley. There are probably other children. Possibly TABITHA HOWELL. I hope to find out more about her. She is, as previously stated, said to be the daughter of old James Howell. The repetition of these names in our family pretty much proves the kinship of the other two Howell men, James and William, to our George Howell. Even Silas Howell named his oldest son "William Decatur Howell" born 1844. Died 1901. The names "William" and "George" are pretty prevailant. Tillman Howell named his son "GEORGE" W. Howell. I wished I could find more on that widow Sarah Howell in Montgomery County records who had land on Turkey Fork of Elk Creek with George Howell. I just betcha she's the mother of our James, George and William! Maybe someone has a Howell who died in that area - Montgomery, Botetourt, etc...before 1782 who had a wife named Sarah....That would pretty much narrow it down! I've never seen the name "ABNER" used in our bunch. HOWEVER, the name "Avery" is interesting. One of Sarah (Howell) Rice-Jaco's daughters was Avery Jaco. One of Thomas and Drucilla (Howell) Hash's sons was AVERY Melvin Hash. I'd like to find out where this AVERY name comes from. I suspect either from the Howell's or the Osbornes or possibly even the Hashes, since Polly Osborne's mother was a Hash. Well, excuse this ramblin on. I'll see what I can come up with on that rascal Peter Roark. Seems there was a Hollywood actor by that name...or was it "O'Roark"??? Keep in touch, Cuz! Let's see what we can piece together on these elusive folk! 3. Found a few things in LDS Family Search that might pertain to the people I've seen mentioned lately: POLLY (MARY) OSBORNE b. 23 Dec 1775 m. GEORGE HOWELL b. 1763, son of JAMES I HOWELL, who was also the father of TABITHA HOWELL b. 1765. Connected records show TABITHA HOWELL b. 1780 married in 1788 to JOHN TOLIVER b. 1776, which seems a little young to be married so I'm guessing there's a date foul-up somewhere! I've also noticed that POLLY OSBORNE is the daughter of ENOCH and JANE (HASH) OSBORNE. POLLY had a sister named HANNAH OSBORNE who married CHARLES COPELAND. Their daughter JANE COPELAND married JAMES SR. HOWELL, son of JAMES I HOWELL. ENOCH and JANE'S ggg-granddaughter MAHALA (HALEY) OSBORNE married ROBERT HOWELL. They are my husband's paternal grandparents. JANE HASH'S grandmother was ELLENDER OSBORNE born in England c. 1698. I haven't found any further information on ELLENDER, but what do you want to bet there's a relation somewhere? AND! Could JAMES SR. HOWELL be our elusive JAMES father of Larkin? His birth date and place do fit. On a different subject, we met and live in northern IN. My husband was born in Floyd Co., KY and I come from Pike Co., IN. I'm not sure what that makes us, but my dad says I talk like a Yankee. ----- Original Message ----- From: Willie D Smith <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, March 04, 2002 11:35 AM Subject: [HOWELL] Re: family > I haven't taken any offense at all, so please don't worry :-).
