Yep, he certainly was! There was an obit someone sent me out of the old Raleigh, N.C. newspaper from 1843 which stated that he was not only a Revolutionary War soldier, but was apparently a minister or bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church there in Wayne county, N.C. He lived there his entire life (Wayne was taken from Dobbs County, and this John Howell was the son of old Joshua Howell. I think Joshua may have been the son of an Etheldred Howell..If anyone has info on Etheldred, please look this up, cause these folks are kin). So, old John was born 1753 in Dobbs County, N.C. and died there in 1843. I've seen his Revolutionary War records as well. I did a lookup for the John Howell listed in (either Lt. or Capt.) Nathaniel Williams Company of Light Infantry, 2nd N.C. Battalion, Continental Line, which is the inscription on the spurious gravemarker here in Tennessee for our equally spurious John "Hamilton" Howell (this is actually the grave of John H. Howell born 1818-died 1859, SON of John Howell (1788-1861) and Nancy Brewer Howell (1792-1886). The records led me back to your John Howell of Wayne County, N.C. This Nathaniel Williams could have been subordinate to one of the other men you mentioned. I said Captain, but I think he was actually a Lieutenant. I'll see if I have a copy of that obit anywhere. It was sent to me a couple of years ago by someone on the Howell rootsweb list. Hopefully, someone is still on this list who also has a copy! Hope this helps!
