    1. Re: [HOWELL] Mathew Howell
    2. This is my data on Aaron Howell that I can verify. Aaron Howell resided in Wayne T. S., Monroe Co., Ohio from the mid 1830's until his death. He his buried at Barbour Ridge Cemetary. His Tombstone inscription reads; Aaron Howell Died Jan. 14, 1869 Age 77 yrs. Note; Aaron's daughter-in-law Jane, wife of his son Aaron is buried next to him. Her tombstone names her husband as Aaron Howell, so this has cause some confusion and lead some people to believe that Jane was married to the older Aaron. I have not been able to find any information to link Aaron as the son of Mathew Howell & Rebecca Henthorn. There apparently is a tradition of Mathew & Rebecca having a son named Aaron who married Elizabeth, daughter of Andrew White , but the only marriage between a Aaron Howell & Elizabeth White that I could find took place in 1797 in Ohio Co., West Virginia, when this Aaron & his wife Elizabeth would have been about 5 yrs. old. Mathew & Rebecca did have at least two children , a son Brice and a daughter Lydia who married Benjamin Cook. I went to the courthouse in St. Clairsville, Ohio, they do not have a copy of Mathew's will but they did have probate records concerning the settling of his estate. There was no Aaron mentioned, but Brice Howell, Benjamin Cook, Rebecca Howell, and a Jeremiah Howell were mentioned. A Jeremiah Howell later owned land near Aaron in Monroe Co. There was also a younger Mathew Howell living in Monroe Co. in the 1820's in Center T. S., probably the same one who shows up later in Meigs Co. There was another Aaron Howell about the same age as our Aaron who later lived in Center T.S. This Aaron was married to a Margaret (she was supposedly nee Sloan but I do not the source for this). There was a Thomas Howell who died in Monroe Co. in the 1820's. He had a son named Aaron about the same age as ours(maybe he was our Aaron?). Mary Howell Smith wife of Bazel Smith is buried at Barbour Ridge Cemetary. She was born near Wheeling on July 09, 1799, died March 02, 1888 in Wayne T.S., Monroe Co. She was supposed to have had a brother named Aaron. According to a newspaper published in Monroe Co. in the 19th century "The Spirit of Democracy" Mary Howell Smith was born near Wheeling but settled with her family shortly thereafter near the mouth of Opossum Creek. The copy of the article I saw did'nt name her father but the three earliest Howells in the area were Thomas Howell, David Howell, and Aaron Howell. There were also several Henthorns living in the same area. Bazel & Mary Smith's eldest daughter Eliza married Aaron Cronin. They had a large family. The Aaron Cronin Clan migrated to Perry Co. Indiana, after the Civil War. Eliza Smith Cronin is buried in the same cemetary as Aaron & Elizabeth Howell's youngest child Hamilton. Elizabeth Howell, wife of our Aaron was born Aug. 04, 1792, died March 30, 1885, in Monroe Co. I cannot verify her maiden name or when she married Aaron. According to various census sources she was either born in Ohio or Pennsylvania, and her parents were born in Pennsylvania or Maryland.(Andrew White and Elizabeth Neiwonger were suppose to be from Maryland). The courthouse in Monroe Co. burn down in 1867, all the wills and marriage records up to that point being destroyed. That and the fact that there are so many Aaron Howells make this family tree almost impossible to sort out. These are the children of Aaron & Elizabeth Howell; 1. John Howell born bef. 1820. 2. Marinda Howell born about 1817, married Hiram Sloan(born June 03 1811, died January 12 1852 in Caldwell Co., Missouri); Married Henry Swiggart on February 02, 1866, in Caldwell Co. 3.Wilford Howell born March 23 1821, died August 30, 1891 in Washinton Co. Ohio, was married to Agnes Farnsworth. 4. Mary Howell born about 1823 was married to Andrew J. Hartshorn. 5. David Howell born about 1825 died in Little Rock, Arkansas, November 16, 1863, was Union Soilder. He was married to Eliza Jane Spear on June 06, 1850. They were living with Aaron & Elizabeth when the census was taken that year. 6.Nancy Howell born about 1828, died before 1870. She was married to William Farnsworth. He was born April 12 1825 in Belmont Co., Ohio, died in Tuscola Co., Michigan on March 12, 1919. 7.Thomas Howell born about 1829 died about 1892 in Missouri. He settled in Caldwell Co., Missouri, apparently before the Civil War. He was married to Martha Staley about 1857. 8.Aaron W. Howell was born about 1834, was married twice, first wife was Jane, they were married before 1860 she died 1871(She is the one buried next to her father-in-law Aaron). Aaron married secondly Mary Oden on January 12 1873. 9. Hamilton Howell was born August 12 1839 in Monroe Co., died January 14, 1915, near Gatchel in Perry Co., Indiana. Buried at Lily Church of Christ Cemetary at Gatchel. He was married to Hannah Cash on November 24, 1860, in Monroe Co. Hamilton & Hannah went to Caldwell Co., Missouri, in 1866 then to Perry Co., Indiana, between 1872-1877. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gladys Malott" <gmalo@theramp.net> To: <HOWELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 07, 2003 10:01 AM Subject: [HOWELL] Mathew Howell > In regards to Mathew Howell 1760 Va, who dies Monroe Co., Ohio, married Elizabeth White. Nathans 1st wife ?, 2nd marriage to Priscilla Cramblet in Ohio, 3rd marriage in Ohio before coming to Illinois, where he died. > > Nathan would be my great great great grandfather, by a daughter Mary from his first marriage. > > Did Matthew have more than one son? > > If we could connect maybe we could exchange information > > > ==== HOWELL Mailing List ==== > To post messages to the Howell discussion list, send them to > HOWELL-L@rootsweb.com >
