Thanks for your answer Carol. I finally dug out my pedigree chart which tells me that my Joseph Howell was born about 1830 in TN., married Hannah Caroline Gibbs b ca 1829 in NC. I'm trying to build on my sister's research, very busy with other matters and not doing much of a job of it.
