    3. Hi cousins, This isn't my line, but I know of a James Howell line that mysteriously starts in Ashe county, NC, about 1810, I believe, in an area called Howell Hollar, or Silas Creek. The line is well researched after him, though I don't have the information, but there is a book on the line in the public library at West Jefferson, Ashe co. NC. Also, there is a website Keep in mind that Ashe and Grayson meet along the state line, and the actual position of the line was not clear for some years (?). Some people thought they lived in one state when in fact they should have been listed in the other. It is a good idea to be suspicious whenever you're dealing with anyone from Grassy Creek, Ashe Co. NC, or the New River area of Virginia, specifically Mouth of Wilson, Independence, and Fox Creek in the early 1800's. andy graham OVHOWELL wrote: > > We're also getting gray looking for JAMES HOWELL c. 1760/70 VA ot NC. > Descendants we have - these people were firm believers in be fruitful and > multiply - but JAMES is a mystery man. 3. Also Cousins, This is also true for Tennessee, since TN did not become a State until 1796 and was North Carolina up until that point.. The counties bordering Ashe Co., NC.. in TN.. include Johnson, Carter, Sullivan, Washington. Which would also include the "parent" and children" of those counties, respectively.. 3. Could this have been the old James Howell who lived on New River, very near the North Carolina line, and down stream from William Howell? It could also have been James Jr. I don't know when James Howell Sr. died, but he didn't live too awfully far from Old Town.
