    3. Will, Please do try to find the obit you speak of. Nothing in our records show our John Howell to be a preacher. It would be nice to prove it one way or another. Do you have proof that John Howell b. 1753 is a son of Joshua Howell. We have searched for that for years. We know that Joshua had a son named John and a grandson named Lewis. The problem is proving exactly which John that is. We could sure use some proof. There are quite a few of us working on this John Howell family. As far as your statement that Joshua may have been the son of Etheldred Howell. The ages just do NOT fit. I have seen that information on the Internet. I believe it is false. They could be related. I don't know, but not a son. The people on the Internet have Joshua born in 1680. (They need to have him born then so that he will "fit" as Ethledred's son. It is not possible. We know that Joshua died 1799. I am sure he was not 119 years old. Joshua was still active in deed records at this time. Yes, the county was Dobbs in 1753 when John was born, but in his pen. app. he states he was born in Wayne Co., NC and lived there all of his life. Even though the county was not named until after he was born, he considered it his county. Please do try to find the obit. If anyone else has it, please post it. It would be a great thing to finally settle this. I hope it turns out that our John Howell was a preacher. There was an obit someone sent me out of the old Raleigh, N.C. newspaper from 1843 which stated that he was not only a Revolutionary War soldier, but was apparently a minister or bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church there in Wayne county, N.C. He lived there his entire life (Wayne was taken from Dobbs County, and this John Howell was the son of old Joshua Howell. I think Joshua may have been the son of an Etheldred Howell..If anyone has info on Etheldred, please look this up, cause these folks are kin). So, old John was born 1753 in Dobbs County, N.C. and died there in 1843. I've seen his Revolutionary War records as well. I did a lookup for the John Howell listed in (either Lt. or Capt.) Nathaniel Williams Company of Light Infantry, 2nd N.C. Battalion, Continental Line, which is the inscription on the spurious gravemarker here in Tennessee for our equally spurious John "Hamilton" Howell (this is actually the grave of John H. Howell born 1818-died 1859, SON of John Howell (1788-1861) and Nancy Brewer Howell (1792-1886). The records led me back to your John Howell of Wayne County, N.C. This Nathaniel Williams could have been subordinate to one of the other men you mentioned. I said Captain, but I think he was actually a Lieutenant. I'll see if I have a copy of that obit anywhere. It was sent to me a couple of years ago by someone on the Howell rootsweb list. Hopefully, someone is still on this list who also has a copy! Hope this helps! I have not seen evidence that our John Howell b. 1753 was a preacher. He was definitely in the Rev. War. We have papers that prove that. His War papers state that he was born May 29, 1753. We also know that he died 1843. > > I don't know who the John Howell "preacher" was. > > Our John Howell b. 1753 was not in Capt. Nathaniel Williams Battalion that I can see. It is not mentioned in his war papers. He was in Capt. Joseph Green's, Capt Thomas Grantham, and Capt. Boon. > > Wynell > > ------------------- > X-Message: #1 > Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2002 18:33:24 -0600 > From: Willie D Smith <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Message-id: <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [HOWELL] Howell of Wayne Co., NC > Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 > Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit > > They're related to old John Howell the preacher who died around 1836 or 1846 > with a will.
