    1. Re: [HOWELL] COLLEEN'S FEBRUARY CHALLENGE
    2. Hi Heather I have contacted you in the past regarding Nathan Howell in Morris Co., NJ hoping you might be able to help with my Morris Co., ancestor - David Howell 17??-1818. I have strong reasons to believe my ancestor was connected to this Nathan Howell. My David Howell was "from Chester" in 1799/1800, at the time of his marriage. He named his children Joseph (wife's father's name), Nathan, David, Stephen and Abram. All these names (perhaps David too) are common to your Nathan and NOT common to any other Howell in that area at that time. Trouble is, David is not listed in Nathan's 1803 will. It is possible he was over looked, or is a nephew to this Nathan, a brother of this Nathan or perhaps a grandson of this Nathan. A further clue is that my David's son Stephen's middle name was "Dean" possibly after John Dean a neighbor to Nathan Howell in Morris Co. What do you have or where can you lead me regarding this Nathan, his ancestors, his siblings or his descendants? Do you know of any connections to the Elmira, Cananadigua or Rochester areas of NYS. We have hit a brick wall with our David and need help. Do I need to go to Morristown? Do you know anyone else researching him or his family? Help - John Jameson

    3. Dear John - Believe it or not, your David is on my mind whenever I am doing anything having to do with genealogy. I have not been able to spend much time in research since the beginning of September, when I went back to work full time - to a job that has been extremely stressful - and I often have to bring some of it home. So, my energy has not been consistently applied to continuing my search. This is so frustrating because I feel that I am so close! All this to say, I am sorry that I have not followed up on your previous contact. So, please forgive me. I will give you what is in my Grandfather's notebook regarding the descendants of Nathan, and then of Abraham, his son. Please know that this info may only be from family hearsay, and to my knowledge has not been proved. Nathan Howell had six sons, and one daughter, as follows: Isaac Howell - born at Southampton and died in Chester - two sons - Nathan and Isaac. His descendants settled mostly in eastern Pennsylvania. Israel Howell - born at Southampton and died in Chester. His descendants - son James married and moved to Binghampton, NY - his daughter married a Cooper. Caleb Howell - born in Chester and died in Randolph, NJ. He had three sons, Daniel, George and Stephen - settled at Palmyra, NY and 5 mi. north. Abraham Howell - grandfather to writer - born at Southampton and died in Chester. Joshua Howell - born and died in Chester. He had a son Joshua who settled near Auburn, NY. Joseph Howell - born and died in Chester. The descendants of Joseph settled in western NY - one son Joseph located at Binghampton. Sarah Howell - born and died at Chester - married a man by the name of Guess - left 3 children. Here is what it says about Abraham's descendants (but I wonder about these children because of the span of years from the first born to the last - 29 years! Could Charity have been a childbearing marvel?! Maybe the earlier children came from an earlier marriage. I don't have a marriage certificate as to when Charity and Abraham were married. The family of Abraham and Charity Howell consisted of five sons and two daughters: Jeremiah Howell born Southampton in 1771. He moved to Owl Creek Ohio about 1816 -left 3 sons - Aaron, Nelson, Philip and 2 daughters - as far as known. Stephen Howell born Chester NJ, 1773. He lived and died there. Had one son and 2 or 3 daughters. Son was killed by falling from load of hay. Abraham Sanford Howell was born in Chester 1778. He married and moved to Owl Creek Ohio, last heard from in Cincinnati, where he followed the occupation of cabinet maker and carpenter and joiner. Huldah Howell was born in Chester - 1783. Married an Alspaugh. Lived in Roxbury township in Morris Co. Sarah Howell born in Chester, 1790. She married a Howell - lived at Sucasunna Plains, NJ. Caleb Howell born in Chester, 1796. Had one son, George and 2 daughters. Son George was a C.E. Caleb followed blacksmithing. Alanson Tappan Howell was born in Chester - Sept. 14, 1800. (He is my ancestor) I think you know about my trip to Chester. It was too short! I needed and wanted 5 days! I would encourage you to go to Chester and talk to the Historical Society. The library has a lot of information, but I found more in the Morristown library. They have a huge folder of microfiche that is all Howell data. It will take hours and hours to go through it all - maybe you could take a helper. But I am convinced if you want to find the answer to your mystery, you need to walk where David walked. Do you have the luxury of being able to spend a week between Morristown and Chester? I believe you will find him. One more thought - if my Nathan is the one descended from Edward Howell, by way of Israel Howell and Abigail Cooper, then his brother was David Howell -born 1724 in Southampton. Have you ever checked into his descendants? My family is asking for dinner, so I must go -- please let me know if any of this has been helpful. I truly wish that I could apply my whole being to the search. I would even meet you in Chester and help you look, if my life were free from jobs, ailing fathers and teenage children. Good luck!
