After seeing the posts to the list from Jenna and Kristen, I wanted to remind you of the post awhile back from Bill Wilson. There is a picture of Westbury Manor, the Howell home at http://met.open.ac.uk/group/kaq/village.htm The photos are listed under Marsh Gibbon. As to the Howell name, thought I'd pass on some info I've collected, though most of you probably already have it. The present Welsh, English and American Howells derive from the old Welsh family (The Kings of Powys) of Abernent in Carmarthenshire, the lineage and name deriving from Howel (Hywel) Dda, King of Wales from 943 to 950. He was the son of Cadell, and was the grandson of Rhodri Mawr, the Great, who married Angharad and who unified almost all of ancient Wales. He was the greatgrandson of Merfyn who married Nest and the great great grandson of Cadell ap Brochwel (did I get it right Sierra?) He was married to Ellen, daughter of the last of the Kings of Dyfed (a shire, or county in mid-Wales along the west coast). The reign of Howel Dda was remarkable for its peacefulness and he was the only ruler of ancient Wales ever desiginated "The Good". He was also the only King ever to issue his own coinage. There is a place in Wales today called Crickhowell, which I believe was Hywel Dda's castle. Also have heard that Hywel was earlier Cwyl and that "Old King Cole" was actually Old King Cwyl. As to Edward being the founder of the Howells in America (1639), records show that there was an Arthur Howell, aged twenty, who sailed to Virginia in 1635. In the same year that Edward Howell came to Mass., a John Howell received a grant in Virginia (believed to have arrive in 1637) and his decendants moved to NC in 1743. There were no less than 41 known emigrants by the name of Howell who were listed on ships passages to America from the years 1623 to 1700 and not all emigrants were accounted for by the Captains of the ships. Whatever I left out I hope Sierra or others will add/correct. Of course, I can't tie my line back to any of these gentlemen!!!!!!!!!! Marshall Howell
