Hello John: Thanks for writing. The 1850 and 1860 census for Lauderdale County, Alabama say that Phillip Howell was born in Tennessee. His wife Mary (Polly) Wesson ( married in 1825 in LCA) is listed as born in South Carolina. I think she was the daughter of Benjamin Wesson and Mary Howell, if I remember correctly. I would also like information on this Mary Howell. Thanks for any help. Colleen, I thought Yea! when I saw this message first as I am having no luck tracing my Howells back to another generation. But, sadly, I just read the post that the testing needs a MALE Howell to to the testing. There are no more in our family line. Or at least none that I know about. Does it have to be direct descendant or can it be from another branch? Such as, from one of my great-grandfather's brothers' lines? Oh well, I guess I will just keep searching. Bill, Colleen, all, Interestingly, my mother, whose grandmother was a HOWELL, always pronounced it HOW'LL (one syllable.) I had thought this was a personal idiosyncrasy or her Southern accent. But her own surname was SHELTON, and she was always careful to give both syllables their due in that name and took umbrage when some of her childhood friends did not. Such things as this have been the basis of changes in spelling. My mother never knew this grandmother, who died long before she was born, but she would have heard the pronunciation from her father. Howell DNA testing has also been done for the descendants of Robert Henry Howell, 1778, Virginia, and later of McMinn County, TN. We are hoping to eventually match up with another southern Howell group. We, too, went through Family Tree DNA where there is a Howell surname project. I would urge those from the various lines to think about having this done. It requires a male with the Howell surname to do the test. It requires only swabbing the inside of the cheek...no bodily fluids involved!
