    1. County Bountries
    2. Nichols
    3. Georgia owned part of Alabama, the middle part then ceded it to the United States in 1802. Georgia added it to MS Territory in 1804. Southern Alabama was controlled by Mississippi Territory in 1798 and slowly the present counties were added. In 1850-1870 the counties in AL look pretty much as we know them today with small changes to be added later. This is the best advice I can offer as I have learned, try to get a map of the state that corresponds directly with the year you are researching. If not, your ancestors may be lost in county/state bountries. Regards, Donna

    2. I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far. This has been a very busy time trying to catch back up after the power outage. I'm sure all of you are getting ready for vacations etc. so I'd like to remind everyone that rootsweb list do not have a NOMAIL setting so if you'll be away for awhile you'll need to unsubscribe and then subscribe when you return. See the welcome note for details on this or see the web page for your list: DANIEL list http://members.aol.com/TreeCrazyD/daniel_l.html FORTUNE list http://members.aol.com/TreeCrazyD/fortun_l.html HEDRICK list http://members.aol.com/TreeCrazyD/hedric_l.html HOWELL list http://members.aol.com/TreeCrazyD/howell_l.html LONG list http://members.aol.com/TreeCrazyD/long_l.html OREAR list http://members.aol.com/TreeCrazyD/orear_l.html SANDERS list http://members.aol.com/TreeCrazyD/sander_l.html STONE list http://members.aol.com/TreeCrazyD/stone_l.html STORY list http://members.aol.com/TreeCrazyD/story_l.html I also started a new list for the discussion of Cass county, Texas history and genealogy if anyone is interested you can join by sending a message to: TXCASS-L-request@rootsweb.com with the word subscribe (this word only) in the body of the e-mail message. Okay, I promised an update on the donations and here it is: Cass Announcements list: 2.00 Daniel surname list: 85.00 Fortune surname list: 12.00 Hedrick surname list: 10.00 Howell surname list: 45.00 Long surname list: 37.00 Orear surname list: 10.00 Sanders surname list: 55.00 Stone surname list: 30.00 Story surname list: 24.00 for a total of 310.00 which is GREAT!!!! I commend you all. As I said before the deadline will be the end of June. My address is: Dana Thomas RR 2 Box 193-A Hughes Springs, Texas 75656 Please remember to send a check or money order with Rootsweb in the payee blank (NOT my name) also send a note with your e-mail address and name of the list you are on. This helps me when I acknowledge the arrival of the donation. If there is anyone out there who doesn't know what this is about let me briefly explain--awhile back when our server went down a new server was added by Rootsweb to accomodate us. This was a $6,000.00 investment and they didn't ask us for a dime. I proposed to my lists that we take up a donation to help with the cost of the new server. Many of our members have responded. It IS NOT necessary to donate and no one will know who does and doesn't. You DO NOT have to donate or pay dues to be on this list! Many who are already current sponsor of Rootsweb have written explaining that you already have sent in sponsorship and that is fine. This is in no way related to sponsorship of Rootsweb. Let's all keep looking for ancestors and I hope we all find ours. One note--some of my lists have been very inactive and I'd like to encourage everyone to get involved and send in your queries, desc. charts etc to the list. Maybe we'll find some links. Have a great weekend, Dana list owner

    2. Hey Dana, sorry about the storm. Listen, I'm real okay with you not sending me an acknowledgement re: the contribution I sent. That's a lot of work and some expense and I'll know it got there when the check comes back so if it helps you any, don't bother with mine. If it doesn't help, that's okay I won't be offended if you send one.

    2. Hi folks! Does anyone know if hospital records exist from the Civil War (particularly the South)? And if so, how does one get copies. Family history says my gg grandfather died in a hospital near Manassas Junction, VA; widows pension application implies he died in the field; Nat. Archives shows him present way past the time he died, although shows him not receiving pay after the date he died per the pension application. Boy, ain't this genealogy stuff fun! Marshall

    2. Hello. Just wanted to let everyone know that I hadn't fell off the face of the earth--I just feel as though I did <G>! We had a terrible storm blow through this last Friday and it knocked 5 trees over on our power line. We just got power back to our house this morning (Wed.). If anyone has tried to e-mail me in the mean time please let me know as AOL starts deleting after about 100 messages (I usually get 60 or so a day) so I know I may have missed some. A friend tried to keep up with it for me but it is quite a chore and I don't know how many AOL deleted before she could get to it. BTW, donations have rolled in this week. Sure was glad to hear from you all via snail mail as it was my only communication means. I'll give an update as soon as I catch up. If you sent in--I'll be sending acknowledgements as soon as I get caught up on my e-mail. Thanks, Dana list owner

    1. Haywood Howell - Wayne Co., NC
    2. Hi Howells ! I'm looking for info on a Haywood Howell from Wayne Co., NC . In the 1850 census he was 53 years old; in his household were Nancy, age 50; Martha, age 17; William, age 15 and Blaney, age 12. Next door was Keder Howell, age 30 and nearby were Barna and Sarah Howell (30 and 22); Collier and Lidia Howell (45 and 45) and Elias Howell (28). It's possible that Haywood was related (father?) to my great great grandfather Daniel Landmon Howell. Please let me know if you have any info on this family. Thanks Marshall

Sadly, Maiser will no longer be our home. Maiser will continue to have regional lists that Larry himself owns but even Larry's surname lists are being moved out also. It seems that rootsweb normally allows supporters ($24.00 a year members) to have 2 e-mail lists. As you might guess, with 10 e-mail lists I didn't see where this would be an option for me. However, rootsweb out of their own generosity has allowed all Maiser genealogy list owners to bring ALL of their lists to rootsweb with no limit and waiving the normal membership. I for one have been totally unaware of what all rootsweb offers for us genealogists until all of this broke out. I knew of there support of the GenWeb project as they allow us county sponsors to put all of our county web pages on their server free of charge. But, it goes much further than that. Do you realize that rootsweb is two individuals who run this out of their own pockets except for the donations they receive from members? I didn't realize this myself. So I for one will be taking all 10 of my e-mail lists to rootsweb and becoming a supporter there of. Now, the listmembers do no have to be members nor do they have to pay anything to be on my lists but I would like to send in a contribution to rootsweb in the name of our e-mail list. So if anyone sees fit to donate to this project please send a check or money order to me with Rootsweb in the pay to blank (NO CHECKS TO ME). When I have set a deadline I will send the money to Rootsweb in the name of the e-mail list it is from. I want to encourage everyone to participate. The folks at rootsweb over the past week has went out and bought a new $6000.oo server to handle all these new lists they'll be hosting from MAISER's shutdown. If everyone on a list would just send a dollar they could easily repay the cost of the server purchased. Remember, this is a time when it doesn't matter how small or how large the gift--just give. Now, as listowner I will never bring this up again. I may send you updates on the amount sent etc. but I will never again ask you to send a donation to rootsweb. I am going to include something in my new welcome letter about it so that new members will know, rootsweb has said that once or twice a year they will send out a notice to all listmembers but they have promised it won't be an arm twisting type notice. I think they are doing us a great service by taking all of us MAISER folks in during our time of need. Believe me folks, I haven't just sat on my tuff during this time, I have looked around for options and the cheapest I found for a list was a place that charged $24.00 a year per list (Larry had us spoiled!!!). Of course rootsweb had the same offer and you could have two lists but that's all the lists I could have had so the other 8 lists would have been without a home. I thank God they have made this offer. I didn't want to loose any of my lists. Okay, now for the other stuff. Since we'll be moving to rootsweb there will be a whole new way of doing things. Not just for me but for you too. We're going to have to learn all of this together. Let's all keep our patience and be understanding to our fellow members during this change over. I will be changing over 10 lists so please bear with me as I am learning a new system too. When things are more progressed I will let you know and send more detailed instructions. For those of you who would like to send a donation to rootsweb in the name of our e-mail list (Please remember: NO FUNDS in my name make payable to Rootsweb) my address is (please include a note for which list(s) you are on): RR 2 BX 193-A Hughes Springs, TX 75656 happy to have a new home, Dana Thomas listowner

    2. J. H. Garner
    3. Looking for info, connections, etc. (he is the end of my Howell line) on James B. Howell, possibly of Virginia? According to the LDS Family Centers, James B. Howell was the father of daughter Rachel Elizabeth Howell, b. 04 Jun 1831 in Indiana, d. 17 May 1929 in Rocky Comfort, McDonald Co, MO, m. Joel Stephen Garner (1828-1901) on 23 May 1852. Other sources show her dieing same date in Stella, MO. Family tradition is she was from Howell Co, TN, which was named after her family; however, there is no Howell Co, TN, so I have hypothesized she was possibly from Howell, Co, MO, since her husband Joel emigrated from TN to MO and their family grew up in MO (ah but alas and alack, the last couple kids were born in Indiana, indicating she COULD have been from there as the family (tempoarily) moved from MO to IN (they later went back to MO again)). Any help will be gratefully appreciated. Jay Garner

    1. new internet genealogical
    2. Hello everyone, This is a news story concerning formation of a new internet genealogical socierty for the purpose of making thousands of .raw data and record available, FREE, on the internet. Dana list owner By JOAN ROSE As one-stop shopping at the Mall has simplified buying habits, founders of a new national genealogical organization are hoping to do likewise with integrated research sites on the internet for American root tracers. Traditionally, American genealogists have had to rely on a paper trail in often distant libraries, musty courthouse basements and weed grown cemeteries to lead to their elusive ancestors. Only recently, in the last five years, have they turned to the Internet to find information that others have written into cyberspace for them. Internet resources have been multiplying rapidly in the past two years, but available information is often sketchy, always scattered and frequently without the documentation so dear to the earnest researchers heart. The United States Internet Genealogical Society in May was incorporated as a non-profit corporation under the laws of California with four major goals and lots of little ones. USIGS, as it will be known on the Net, not only will seek out, index and point to all kinds of research data for free public access online, but it will seek out funding grants and contributions to help defray the costs of puting it there. "The Internet will be the Genealogical Research Library of the 21st Century," believes James Streeter, USIGS president and a descendant of the Mayflower, who has been working on his family history for 35 years to include 6500 individuals in 50 generations. "USIGS brings a new concept to the genealogy community," he explained, inasmuch as "it is dedicated to provide FREE online access to records of interest to the entire genealogy community." To this end, USIGS will encourage volunteers, both individuals and groups, to transcribe their records to websites, it will correlate all such information now online and that which is to come, and it will raise funds to pay for costs incurred in such mammoth projects as eventually putting online U.S. Census records, a long-time dream of many internetters. USIGS is not unlike an international organization, IIGS, which came into being at the same time about two months ago, and with some overlapping founders. The two will not compete, but will complement each other and work together in some fields for the benefit of genealogists. USIGS, however, will concern itself with American records, primarily of the United States, while IIGS will be open for world-wide research. Unlike IIGS, USIGS has a tightly structured executive branch, including a 12-member board of directors, a staff of officers who will oversee all projects and fund-raising activities and appointed committees with definitely-delineated duties and missions. Besides Streeter, of Buena Park, Calif., newly-elected officers include: Tom Ward of Columbus, Kans., vice president; Linda Lewis of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., secretary; and Jerry E. Dill of Emmett, Idaho, treasurer. Board members are Don E. Dale of Kansas, David M. Leininger of Mahomet, Ill., and Billie McNamara of Knoxville, Tenn. , who are now holding one year terms; Donald L. Spidell of Safford, Ariz., Ken Hollingsworth of Redlands, Calif., John Rigdon of South Carolina, and Larry V. Stephens of Bloomington, Ind. , now holding two year terms; and Nancy Trice of Hopkins County, KY, Pat Smith of Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, and John G. West of Evansville, Ind., who are now holding three year terms. Vacancies are now being filled by appointment as worthy Web Genealogists volunteer for membership. USIGS has set up a web site at: http://www.dsenter.com/usigs/ and is providing ongoing membership information to those who subscribe to its members list. Committees already formed and chairmen are listed. ?volunteers are needed to assist in all of them and in the various projects that are in process of getting started. At this time membership is free, and all interested are encouraged to sign on at the USIGS home page. Members will be asked to volunteer time, talents, expertise and ideas as needed and to spread the word to their local organizations and other online sites to assist USIGS in getting up and running. One of its main functions is to solicit grants from corporate sponsorship and other sources and through tax-deductible contributions. Streeter has indicated that "announcement of a major source of funding may be expected soon." Any funds received will be distributed to individuals or organizations for specific projects. No priority list has been set up to receive first funds available, but one major project identified by organizers has been the Census Project, beginning perhaps with that of 1850, to put the entire census data, state by state and county by county, on line. Streeter emphasized that all records funded by USIGS will be available on line free to anyone with internet access. USIGS was not set up to make money, he stressed, but to find money to further transcription and preservation of genealogical data at internet sites. USIGS does not plan to duplicate work already in progress by other online groups, such as the USGenWeb project, he noted, but to coordinate that work to make such data readily accessible. Streeter and other officers and directors are associated with one or more of these other organizations in top management and/or working positions. Work will depend largely on local volunteers who will be able to access various physical locations, transcribe or scan records and create a site online to store and maintain it. As envisioned, this is a program that will take many years to bring to fruition, and probably never will be completed. But as more and more research sources are transferred to the internet, more and more family tree tracers will be able to pursue their hobby at home.

    1. Library of Congress
    2. For anyone new to the list, if you would like a list of books in the Library of Congress that have info on Howells, go to http://lcweb.loc.gov/catalog/browse/prem.html... Type in Howell, search, then choose one of the entries that says Howell Family. Last time I checked there was a list of 28 books. More than likley they are all reference books. I haven't heard of anyone being able to get their local library to "borrow" a copy of one, though I'd love to hear if someone has been successful in getting access to a copy. Probably have to actually go there to read one. Good luck. Marshall
