DESPERATELY SEEKING: Howell's from Porter Township, Niagara Co., NY, in late 1700's, early 1800's... Is anyone researching a Stephen Howell - born about 1801, Daniel Howell - born about 1805, or John Howell - 1807? All from the Niagara Co. area of New York. Unknown if born there. I need your help!!! PLEASE... I have much info to share on John Howell and descendants, but know nothing on William Howell, Stephen Howell - born about 1801, or Daniel Howell - born about 1805. Any assistance greatly appreciated! Email me at: neptuna@bellsouth.net 1. William Howell unknown birth and death, wife unkown??? 2. His Sons were: Stephen Howell - born about 1801 Daniel Howell - born about 1805 John Howell - 1807 3. John Howell married Phebe Vrooman, in Niagara Co., NY? abt 1827. Living there John Howell & Phebe Vrooman had the following children: Sidney J. Howell- born 1830 Phefee (Phebe) Jane Howell - born 1834 Jackson Howell - born 1836 Henry S. Howell - born 1840 Chatford Amos Howell (my GG Grandfather) born - November 21, 1841 Agnes Howell - born 1842 Ella Howell - born 1843 Frank Howell - born 1844 Margery Howell - born 1849 As far as I know they were all born in NY, but not really sure. Only Chatford Amos Howell (my GG Grandfather) born - November 21, 1841, came to Michigan from NY, as far as I know... Chatford Amos Howell (my GG Grandfather)settled in the thumb area of Michigan and homesteaded 2 plots of land, as he served twice in the Civil War. ----------- I've been putting together all of the pieces of the Howell family together with FTW info and this is the conclusion I have come to. Please understand this is only conjecture. Considering the Howell families on the 1840 census in Porter Township, Niagara Co., NY, I feel that William Howell (1771-1780) was the father of three sons, Daniel (1791-1800), John (1807) and Stephen (1801-1810). In addition, the enumerating of the households is rather meaningful. In the census, this is the order of the households as reported by the census taker: William Howell Tice Ripson (brother to Catherine who married Stephen Knapp) Stephen Howell (William's son) John Vrooman Sidney Vrooman Solomon Moss William Moss Tewnis Vrooman John Howell (William's son) William's son Daniel was here in the Town in 1830 and 1840, living about 1-1/2 miles east of the above. There is the chance that Daniel's wife was Sally who died 14 Feb 1847 of consumption of the blood. She was 46 (b 1801), was married and a housewife. It's possible that they had a daughter Mary E. who died 2 Feb 1847 of consumption at age 2 (b 1845). On the 1850 census there are two unaccounted for children who may have been Daniel's--Daniel, 22 (b 1828) who was a clerk for Peter Tower, and Nancy, 17 (1833) who was living in with the John E. McEwin family. Thanks so much! Any clues appreciated :) Michele neptuna@bellsouth.net

Hello everyone, I hope everyone is having a great summer. First, the bad news...It seems the spammers have found us at rootsweb and some of the lists have been bombarded with spam. For those of you who weren't with us when MAISER was shut down let's go over the meaning of spam...Spam is UNSOLICITED and UNWANTED junk e-mail! Okay, now the not so bad news--to eliminate the possibility of the MAISER incident from happening again the folks at Rootsweb suggested to us listowner to make our list NON postable. In other words if someone is not on the list they can't post to the list. The spammers haven't yet gone to the trouble to subscribe to lists just to be able to post to them. Now, that's no so bad to those of us who are members but yet it does cause problems for those who are not. This means they may not post. I know some people (like myself) who belong to several lists and can't be on all of them that they want to post to. I will try and keep up with the posts that come in from people that can't post them directly but I need you're help too. Please offer to post messages to the list from those people you know. Now, just a reminder to all the folks who are on digest mode. When you click reply the RE: just says something about digest mode version such and such. Please delete that and replace it with what you are replying to so everyone will know what the message is about. Also, while we're on the subject of subject lines let me remind everyone that it is very helpful to those of us who get 100s of e-mails a day if you use the subject line wisely! Remember too, that if you just simply put "research" or "genealogy" in the subject line that some folks (like me) will just delete it. We get too many a day to look through such. Please use a subject line like this: VAUGHAN, John C. 1845 VA>KY>TX Now, I've had some folks say what does all that mean? Okay here's what it means: John C. Vaughan born 1845 in VA moved to KY and then on to TX. This way if someone else has a John Vaughan but he was born in 1850 in NC they know this e-mail doesn't pertain to them. On the other hand if someone else has a John Vaughan who was born in 1844 but they don't know where and he ended up in Texas then they know they may want to take a look at this particular e-mail. Do you see the difference with this approach and "genealogy" or "research"? Even a surname in the subject line doesn't help when there are sometimes 100s of folks on the surname e-mail list looking for the same surname. Everyone have a great weekend! Hello -- I'm looking for some genealogical background on my g-grandfather Samuel Urer Howell . I'm embarrassed to admit how little I know about him, but I do know that he had at least 9 children, one of whom was Paul Howell (b. 1898), who was my grandfather. Samuel was born abt 1867 and lived most of his adult life in Illinois. Anyone have this Samuel Urer Howell in their data? Any advice or information is appreciated. Please e-mail. Thanks. Need data on George Howell, possible son of Benjamin Howell Jr. (died 1799 Montgomery Co. VA). George was born about 1760-1770, and married Mary "Polly" Osborne. He apparently lived in the Elk Creek area, and may have been the father of Calvin Howell and John Howell. Enoch Osborne was his father-in-law. Will Smith rebelyell@cafes.net

Seeking any hints, links, ideas, suggestions to find the parents of siblings Stephen b 1817 OH, William b 1818 OH, George b 1821 OH, Calista b 1833 OH, Elizabeth b 1835 OH HOWELL. Parents b PA according to later census info. Can find both Stephen and William in Allen Co OH (1838, 1840) when they marry. All are in IA by 1850--probably shortly after 1840--Jasper, Van Buren , Polk Cos. Family lore says that the family were Quakers (Friends) and had land that was part of William Penn's original land grant, that they owned and operated a ferry over the Delaware R at a place called Howell's Landing. The 1850 Jasper Co IA census states that an Elizabeth who is living with George and family is "mother". All of the siblings except Elizabeth go overland to OR between 1852-1863 and settle in Benton Co OR. Do any of these proper names ring a bell, or does anyone have ties to the PA/NJ Howells who could help find the parents of these children? Nancie Howell Willey rewilley@localaccess.com

Recipe #2 -- TRACING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY -- STEP ONE HOME SOURCES In beginning genealogical research, you always begin with yourself and work back one generation at a time. Therefore, the first step will be to do a thorough job of searching your "home sources." These are the things that can be found right in your home or the homes of your parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. If you do a good job on this step, the next steps will be much easier! The idea here is to contact every single living relative you can find to see what they already know and what documents they already have. (Sample letters will follow.) A CHECKLIST OF HOME SOURCES PERSONAL RECORDS Journals/diaries Letters Photo albums Personal experiences Baby books Wedding books Scrap books Funeral books Guest books School records LEGAL PAPERS Wills Probate records Other court records Deeds Other land records Contracts Bonds CITIZENSHIP RECORDS Naturalization papers Passports Visas NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS Announcements Obituaries Special Events Vital statistics Professional/trade CERTIFICATES Birth Marriage Death Divorce Adoption Baptism Confirmation Graduation Achievement MILITARY RECORDS Service Pension Discharge Selective Service National Guard Citations Ribbons FAMILY RECORDS Bible Genealogies Family Traditions EMPLOYMENT RECORDS Apprenticeship Social Security Pension Union Awards ANNOUNCEMENTS Wedding Birth Funeral Graduation Anniversary Birthday Engagement MISCELLANEOUS Memberships Financial records Health records Licenses Coats of Arms Besides all of the above Home Sources, an important means of getting information is the personal interview. The best way to do this is by a personal visit (and a tape recorder if the interviewee doesn't mind). Before you go, let the person know the reason for your visit so they will be prepared to answer your questions. And be sure you have a plan, a list of questions to ask. You direct the conversation so you will get the information you really want. If an "in person" interview is not possible, you can use the telephone or write a letter. Again, have your questions ready so that you will get the information you want. If you want to ask questions over the phone, a note to find out when it will be convenient to call, and the reason for the call, is always a good idea. SUGGESTED PERSONAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS What do you know about your ancestors? Did any family members serve in the military? Which war? What church did your family attend? Do you know any family members who have done genealogical research? Do you know of any special family celebrations or gatherings? What family traditions do you know of? When and where were your parents born? How did they meet? When and where were they married? What were their occupations? What kind of education did they have? If college, which one? When and where did your parents die? Where are they buried? Who were their brothers and sisters? Ask the same questions about their grandparents. When and where were you born? Who are your brothers and sisters? Birth dates? Etc. What places have you lived? What was your childhood like? Are there any special events or memories you would like to share? Go to the oldest members of your family first -- otherwise they may be gone before you get to it. If you write letters, you can ask your questions with spaces for answers and request that they simply fill out the answers and return the letter to you. But be reasonable -- don't ask for too much at once. A series of short letters is better than one long one. Example: Date Your name Your address Address of relative Dear Aunt Mabel, I am gathering information on our Cook family line and I was wondering if you could tell me about your parents: When and where were they born? When and where were they married? When and where did they die? Where are they buried? Do you have any certificates or Bible records of these events? If so, may I have photocopies? I will be glad to reimburse you for the copying cost. To make it easy, you can simply answer my questions on this letter and return it to me in the enclosed self-addressed, stamped envelope. If you have any additional information about your family that you would like to share, you can use the back side of this letter. Thanks for your help! Sincerely, OR Dear Grandma, I am planning to write a history of our Russell family. I was wondering if you could tell me who has the family Bible? Mother remembers seeing it when she was a child, but doesn't know where it is now. I hope you do! Love, OR Dear Distant Relative, We share a common ancestor, Oliver Hartwell Cook. I am writing a history of the Cook family and I would like to include your branch. I would appreciate it if you would fill out the enclosed ancestor chart and family group sheet to the best of your ability. I am enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope for you to return them in. I will be happy to share the family history with you when it is complete. Sincerely, Except with a very close relative, you should always enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope and offer to pay the cost if you are asking them to copy something. It is a good idea to keep copies of all your correspondence. HAPPY HUNTING! Sue

SUE'S COOK BOOK My name is Sue Roe. I live in Seal Beach, CA. Your Cook List Owner, Elinor Stephens, has asked me to write a column for the Cook Mail list that will give helpful hints for doing genealogical research. I'm going to call my column SUE'S COOK BOOK and I will be posting "Recipes" for doing various things. I hope this will be helpful to many of you. RECIPE #1 -- HOW TO POST A QUERY When posting a query to an online mail list or genealogy bulletin board, there are a few simple rules: 1. Start with your earliest known ancestor and give generations down to yourself (or down as far as you wish to go--you may want to list only the generations that have the surname you are searching for). Number the generations. 2. Give full name, birth date and place, death date and place, marriage date and place and name of spouse. If dates are not known, estimate. 3. Be sure to include your name and how people can get in touch with you. The idea is to keep it simple, while giving enough information so that people can see if they might tie into your line. The queries that people will not bother to read and respond to are the ones that are either too long and complicated or the ones that are lacking dates and places. Here is an example: My Cook Line 1. Robert COOK, Sr. b. abt 1636, England, d. 17 Sept 1699, Dorchester, MA, m. Sarah (surname unknown) abt. 1670. 2. Capt. Robert COOK, Jr. b. 9 Dec 1670, Boston, MA, d. 1 Apr. 1756, Needham, MA, m. Submit WEEKS 26 Oct 1693. 3. Elijah COOK b. 4 Apr 1696, Dorchester, MA, d. 1743, Worcester, MA, m. Deborah PARKER 10 Dec 1718, Dedham, MA. 4. Enoch COOK b. 19 Mar 1721, Needham, MA, d. 4 Feb 1797, Dummerston, VT, m. Lucy Rice 21 Nov 1745, Leicester, MA. 5. Elijah COOK b. 9 Feb 1752, Worcester, MA, d. 12 June 1812, probably Delaware Co., NY, m. Relief "Laifa" HARTWELL 1779, Putney, VT. 6. Ralph COOK, b. 2 Mar 1787, Putney, VT, d. 30 Sept 1866, Adams Co., IL, m. Jobje "Dollie" VAN BUREN 8 May 1814, Oswego Co., NY. 7. Oliver Hartwell COOK b. 15 Nov 1818, Otsego Co., NY, d. 27 Feb 1907, San Diego Co., CA, m. Clarissa QUINCY 30 Nov 1843, Adams Co., IL. 8. Mary Elizabeth COOK b. 8 Feb 1845, Adams Co., IL, d. 14 may 1899, San Diego co., CA, m. Joseph CHILSON 1 Aug 1860, Miami Co., KS. Here is where the line "females out" -- I could end the query here -- or I could go on down to myself, as follows. 9. Mary Alice CHILSON b. 14 Aug 1861, Miami Co., KS, d. 26 Sept 1949, San Diego Co., CA, m. Allen RUSSELL 15 Oct 1881, Miami Co., KS. 10. Maria RUSSELL and Ernest Stephen HILLIER--my grandparents. 11. Hartwell Russell George HILLIER and Elsie VOS--my parents. 12. Susan Marie HILLIER--me!--m. to James Herbert ROE. If anyone ties into this Cook line, I would love to hear from you! I have much more detail and would be glad to share. Sue Roe (SueMHR@aol.com) 117 Harvard Lane Seal Beach, CA 90740-2508

Three separate queries (if you think your Howell's are a mess): 1. Does anyone have a Joseph who was a RWS who would have had children 1800-1810. Any responses welcome, but expect it to be a Joseph of Cabarrus Co., NC, one of Rowan, NC, or York, SC. 2. Thomas Howell Crayton, probably of Chatham Co. area, NC, b. 1780/84. Mother is rumored to be a Mary Howell. Any idea who? 3. Crocer (or any close spelling} Howell of SC mid to late 1800's moved to NW GA. He was said to be the first man to run a ferry on the Broad River in SC (?). Had a daughter, Matilda Caroline (who married Thomas Jefferson Crayton in GA.) The answer is yes. My cousin, Bob is his own cousin two ways.

She bought the land from John M. & Helen (Singleton) Robinson. In 1856 Elizabeth Ann Howell loaned Sarah's husband, Ransom Ellis, $2,400.00 to be repaid in $400.00 payments on the first day of the year for six years.
