In a message dated 97-08-18 09:34:42 EDT, you write: << I also have a David JERNIGAN who has a daughter named Isabell who married a Howell. Was this the John Howell b. 1753? >> I am a HOWELL researcher also BUT I also have JERNIGANs married into my RILEY line as well as HOWELL line. This is sort of funnny or has a funny story to it. I work really closely on my RILEY line with a cousin who is a JERNIGAN and I have forwarded your message on to her. Sharon Jernigan Tingley is her name (shrun@aol.com) and she also is very active in the JERNIGAN home page. Here is that URL for you..... http://members.aol.com/jernigan01/homepg1.htm Do you have a JARNIGAN/HOWELL marriage in Polk Co., TN? I don't have the one you mention here and I also don't have your HOWELLs in Wayne Co either. But will keep your message in case I run across anything! Good luck! Darlene

Hello everyone, This is my first post, I hope someone can help me locate this Howell. My 4th Great grandmother was Nancy HOWELL. Nancy was b.Nov, 11, 1777 d. Apr 22, 1852, Floyd Co. VA. She married John Bryant HYLTON b. c1775 d.March 28, 1815. Nancy married 2nd William Hancock. Nancy HOWELL's parents were Joshua (possibly Josiah?) HOWELL b.1744 d.July 2, 1835, Muncie, Indiana. Joshua's wife's name was Mary. (don't know maiden name). Joshua was a patriot in the Rev. War. It is believed that he came from PA, but possibly NY?? They lived in Montgomery Co., VA for awhile. They left VA in 1808; then moved onto Champaign Co., OH. Apparently, he was one of the founders of Christiansburg (now called Liberty). He and Mary then moved to Darke Co., OH and finally to Muncie, Indiana, where they both died. This info was taken from Dorothy Burnett Peterson's book; Blue Ridge Heritage. I have seen reference that his name may have also been recorded as Josiah. Any additions and/or corrections would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you for your time, Cindy Hylton Carpenter cindycar@gte.net

Hi! I'm new to the list, and would like to know if there is a place that has a gedcom file of all known Howells so that I can make a match with the Howells in my family tree. Dear list members, Recently a Web Page running under the name of GenForum.Com was started. This page is a message board for surnames, the owner listed all the surnames that were being run under ROOTSWEB on it. A night or so ago the owner of this page decided to flood ROOTSWEB with Spam mail about his page. The following is a letter sent to all listowners from Brian Leverich owner of ROOTSWEB. <As many of you are aware, GENFORUM.COM spammed all the RootsWeb lists <tonight. <It killed our mail server, and judging by the e-mail we've received <it irritated a lot of folks. <Here's what we've done at RootsWeb: <We captured and killed as much of the spam as we could, and I'm <trying to bring the mail server back on line. <I've written to Cliff Shaw to tell him we'll be sending him a bill <for damages after we clean up the wreckage, and we expect him to pay <promptly. <I've also written to all the upstream providers of his Internet <connection, asking them to share a personal growth opportunity with <him. <What a sleaze. *sigh* -B>> I suggest that the members of this list boycott this page to show are support for ROOTSWEB. We need to help stop these spammers. Remember MAISER???? At this time I would like to suggest if you haven't had the chance to mail in a donation to ROOTSWEB Please do so. This only goes to show that your donation is well used to keep the computers of ROOTSWEB well and alive. This is not the first spam to hit ROOTSWEB since the death of MAISER, but hopfully with the combined efforts of Brian, Karen and Larry it will be the last. To be a "member" it is $12.00 I think it is $24.00 to be a "sponsor". It is $12.00 per person not per list that you're on. They request US funds to be sent to this address: Rootsweb Genealogical Data Cooperative P.O. Dyfed is a shire (a county). The boundaries may have been different at that time period but most recently it is mid-Wales along the west coast. In the word, Abernent, "aber" means "above" usually in reference to a river, village, or some other geographic feature below. I have a Welsh dictionary and map available if anyone wants more information. Just came across some additional info (mixed in with some stuff I already had)on Howell Welsh origins I thought I'd share. Would be interested if this info supports or contradicts what each of you have. Present Welsh, English and American Howells derive from old Welsh family of Abernent in Carmarthenshire, the linage and name deriving from Howel Dda (I think it's really Hywel Dda), the King of Wales from 943 to 950. He was grandson of Rhodri Mawr, the Great, who united almost all of ancient Wales under his supremacy. He (Hywel Dda I presume) was married to Ellen, daughter of the last of the Kings of Dyfed (whoever or whatever that is?) The reign of Howel Dda was remarkable for its peacefulness, and is the only ruler of ancient Wales designated "The Good". He was also the only King ever to issue his own coinage. On a visit to Rome in 928, became a student of jurisprudence, and the code of laws he composed is his lasting claim to fame. Three parts of his code are still found in English Common Law (which three?). He was such a wise and just man that he was called "the head and glory of all the Britons." There is a place today in Wales called Crickhowell, which I think was Hywel Dda's castle/home/fortress/something? Ring a bell with anyone? Marshall
