My Lemuel Howell was in the Revolution; entered 1777; discharged 1782. I know his father was Israel and mother was Anna White (maybe Mary Anna White). Lemuel Howell m. Mercy Chester prob. after his discharge in 1882. They had a daughter Mary Howell who was born 1783; died in WI in 1838 at age 55. I do not know if she had siblings. But, I'm sure Lemuel was long gone by the 1820s. Lemuel must have been born between 1735 and 1757 (His father Israel was b. 1715). My question is: How do I find Mercy Chester's parents? -- Alice Quayle Gershman 5253 Bluebell Avenue North Hollywood, CA 91607 quayle@earthlink.net ==== HOWELL Mailing List ==== A message from the listowner: For more info on the HOWELL list please see: http://members.aol.com/TreeCrazyD/howell_l.html Note: that is HOWELL _L just like in the list name. Nancie. I finally found the info about Isreal Howell. There is an Isreal that married Sarah Linsweller, 10 Sep 1814 in Champaign Co, OH (source;Early Marriages of Ohio with LDA County numbers, Family Tree Maker CD) There is a Lemuel Howell in the 1850 census in Jefferson twp, Clark Co, Indiana We have a Lemuel who was born in Champaign Co, OH about 1814, parents were James and Abigail (Sumpter) Howell. He married Barbara Huddleston 16 June 1837 in Delaware Co, Indiana. Do you know who Aden Howell? He is listed in 1810 Champaign Co, OH tax records (Ohio Source Books) Our Howell family (Joshua and Mary with chidren-David, Nancy,Abigail, Joshua Jr, Thomas, James, John, Daniel, and Jeremiah) were first residents of Champaign Co in 1808. So as you check for your Isreal, look in all the surrounding counties. I found the county lines changed several time in the time between 1800 and 1820. Hope you have some luck. I did not check for the other children's names on the Marriage CD-if you want me to look, let me know. This was sent to me by Marv. Kale. Thanks Marv. I hope everyone enjoys this: The Fall 1996 issue of THE UPPER CUMBERLAND RESEARCHER contained the following note from THE LEFTWICH HERITAGE on common naming practices: The 1st son was usually named after the father's father. The 2nd son was usually named after the mother's father. The 3rd son was usually named after the father. The 4th son was usually named after the father's eldest brother. The 5th son was usually named after the mother's eldest brother. The 1st daughter was usually named after the mother's mother. The 2nd daughter was usually named after the father's mother. The 3rd daughter was usually named after the mother. The 4th daughter was usually named after the mother's eldest sister. The 5th daughter was usually named after the father's eldest sister. "This pattern was not always followed exactly, but most would usually keep the pattern for the first three children. If there was a name that was found in every generation (example: John, William, Edward, Charles, etc), then somewhere in their children you will surely find these names. If one is stuck on finding parents for an ancestor, try this pattern to give one a suggestion as to a name to search for." In my family, there is frequent usage of the names, and their variants, of John, William (and Wyley, Wiley, Willie, etc), and Benjamin. In looking at wills, deeds, and other documents, it is often very confusing because of the repetetive appearance of the same names. THE UPPER CUMBERLAND RESEARCHER is published by the Upper Cumberland Genealogical Society, Box 575, Cookeville, TN 38503-0575. ==== HOWELL Mailing List ==== A message from the listowner: For more info on the HOWELL list please see: http://members.aol.com/TreeCrazyD/howell_l.html Note: that is HOWELL _L just like in the list name. Hi, Cousins Alice & Jerry! I too am descended from Edward Howell thru his daughter, Dorothy, who married Richard Woodhull. If I count it correctly, Dorothy was my 7th g-grandmother. I have not seen the Howell book which you referred to but am "very" interested!! Does it contain any information on the female lines like Dorothy's. My descent from Dorothy is to the Woodhulls; then the Jayne family to the Hawkins, Gerard's and finally Wicks and Greene, which was my maternal grandmother's maiden name. I'm flabbergasted to 'meet' someone at long last. I'd love to compare notes with both of you in greater detail.
