Maybe this is the only time that some of you have a chance to bitch. Well, it is not appealing to the rest of us. Let's get back to normal here, please.

    3. Ok I have heard alot about the problems here. I am new at this. I doit as a hobby and for the future Howells. Please dont take this wrong, but its starting to get annoying. Lets stop the bickering and have fun and learn who we are. I can understand everyone's complaints. Take note and drive on. I have only found to possible connections to my tree. (and they weren't even direct to me, cousins of cousins) I for one would like Jim to continue and if someone can give him a hand or help guide him then so be it, help him. He appears to be a kind and caring gentleman, who only means well. I am not blaming any one everyone is initialed to their opinion so please give him a hand. HE IS TRIING VERY HARD!!! 3. Dear Resa. And All Subscribers. Resa. You just posted a message of over 500 words and not one word of GENEALOGY RESEARCH. in it. The very thing that you are coming down on me about. 3. I have spent the past week putting together my Howell line to post to this list so that I may help others as well as myself in locating unknown family. But with what has been going on lately I'm wondering if my efforts(or anyone else's) would be appreciated at all. There seems to be a lack of appreciation on the part of some members. As a relatively new member of this list serve(and I belong to many) I must say that if anything were to cause me to run screaming from this particular one it would not be Jim. It would be those who have spent far too much Internet time whining about a nice gesture and a simple misunderstanding of how software posted (meaning unintended attachments). Genealogy is supposed to be a fun adventure into our personal history not a battle over such meaningless crap. If we were receiving unrelated advertisements and messages on a daily basis that would one thing, but I have not seen this to be the case. The reality is people, if you think you can do a better job than Jim, without being paid, than do it. If you can't . . . BACK OFF! I for one think he is doing a great job. Denise

    3. There sure seems to be a lot of Howells, but very few from Mississippi. I know my grandfather had at least two brothers, Sam and Wiley and he was born in Leake county Mississippi. He died of TB in 1932 or 33 probably in Bolivar County Mississippi. He was married to my grandmother, Ludie Kuykendall of Polk county Arkansas. They had six children. Elzie Jr, Viola, Ruby, Onie Mae, Louise, Clarence, Mildred. But still I can't find any information on him. Nothing on when he married. I did find them listed as Hall on the 1920 Census in Bolivar county. Keep hoping someone will find them somewhere. I have ordered the 1900 census search for Bolivar county and Polk county hoping to find something on grandmother or grandfather. If anyone has any thing on any Howells or Kuykendalls in Mississippi or Arkansas I would sure be intrested. Thanks Charlotte

    3. Resa, I don't have time to go thoroughly into this at this particular time, as I have *got* to leave for work, or I'll be late............just could not allow your post to run by itself for the entire day, with no comments. Not all of us agree with you............some may.........some may not.............but if you want this list to be as perfect as you've suggested, my suggestion to YOU is to take it over and be the listowner yourself, instead of criticising Jim.........at least he DONATES his time for the cause.......and NOT to be bitched at. Norma in Rio Linda, CA.............and I WILL be back later this evening for more detailed comments to you. 1. [HOWELL-L] Listowner Stay/Leave??
    2. Resa Hennings
    3. Hello everyone, I had privately written to Jim Rowan, the Listowner here at HOWELL-L, last week asking him why he was posting attachments, tests, and an off-topic note (as sweet as the Mother's Day comments were, they WERE off-topic). For those of you who have been around Listserves any length of time, you know those are very much NO-NOs. Just isn't done, and ESPECIALLY is not done by the Listowner, who is supposed to be responsible to make sure the rules are not broken. As I said to him in my note, if he were going to continue to be the one to break the rules, I felt he should re-think serving as Listowner. If he follows the rules, I have no qualms about him staying. Jim wrote back and said he was having some kind of trouble with his mail program, I believe it was. I've been on the Internet over four years and for a long time I sub- scribed to ROOTS-L, the granddaddy of them all. Their address was at the University of North Dakota at the time, but has since changed as they outgrew the computers in ND. Today they are Rootsweb, the "backer" of this HOWELL-L group and many other such groups. There on Roots-L is where I really learned how it all works. And believe me, those people would pounce on you in nothing flat for sending an attachment! And I mean POUNCE! I remember one stretch of time there were vicious flame wars because people had too many typos and grammatical errors in their postings! And the biggest sin of all was not including an explanative subject line. Many people left the listserve, in tears, I am sure. It got quite brutal. Actually, too brutal, I thought. But I stayed on because there was such good genealogy being discussed. And I made EXTRA sure all my posts were written well and typed perfectly--didn't want to get yelled at! It was just a phenomenal learning experience for me, being on Roots-L those early Internet years of mine. There were some professional genealogists on Roots-L together with just regular hobbyists, who all had very high standards. They had no time for errors nor for reading garbage. And I cannot really disagree with that. People who want to research their families and establish relationships according to the established rules of proof, may want to publish their findings some day. In essence, they are writing a "legal brief." All of the legal system's rules of proof and evidence apply in serious genealogical writings. So those high standards of many of the people on Roots-L applied to every facet of genealogy in which they became involved, which, of course, included listserves. Each of us has our own agenda in our reserach. But regardless of what that is--the listserve rules should be followed by all. So, those of you here on HOWELL-L, who say "I haven't seen any posts that bothered me," maybe have not been on a listserve that follows the rules to a T. Maybe following the rules so closely is excessive, I don't know. But I do know that each listserve develops its own unique personality and level of expertise through the guidance of the list- owner and the subscribers themselves. The group is what we make it. What level of quality do we want here? Do we want to be serious and down to business and striving for perfection, or will we end up sharing recipes and talking sports scores? I'm sure there's a happy medium. But remember that if we gravitate to the lower end, many of the more serious researchers will just UNsubscribe. And it will be our loss, as we could learn many things from those individuals. My two cents worth. Resa Nichols Hennings Houston

    3. I am looking for Robert HOWELL b. March 7, 1788 who married Dorothy V. BRIGGS on July 6, 1813 in Powhatan County, VA and moved to McMinn Co., TN aft 1816. Robert died at Spring Place, Murray Co., GA January 30, 1834. He was in Spring Place after 1828 for a spell to build on the Joseph Vann and David McNair homes. His son Robert Nathaniel Henry HOWELL married Elizabeth NICHOLSON and they moved to TX by mid 1850's. They were in Smith County, TX until late 1870's when they moved to Comanche County where he stayed until his death in 1896. I am stuck in TN, cannot make the connection to Robert HOWELL in VA or to his parents. We have located Dorothy's ancestry on her mothers side quite a ways back but are stuck on Robert Henry HOWELL. So any help would be appreciated. Their families seemed to be around Chesterfield, Powhatan, and Amelia Counties in VA. 3. I'm a descendant of Myhill Howell b. 1789 York Co., SC d. 1853 in Alabama married abt 1810 to Nancy Paris. Myhill was son of Joseph Howell (abt 1745-11 Oct 1819 York Co., SC) & Lucy Smith daughter of Joseph Smith and Elizabeth Collier. Joseph Howell & Joseph Smith were supposedly Rev. War Veterans. I have been unable to find proof of their service, but there are few SC RW records in the Houston library. Any help on this or extending these lines is greatly appreciated. Ky White Houston, TX

Now is not the time to pout or whine, simply obey the rules and insist that others do or boot them. Now let's get back to genealogy. Ky White Houston, TX

    3. Jim, I too appreciate your efforts and hard work on the list. I enjoyed reading the Roll Call posts. Although I didn't get any concrete info, I did get a couple of leads. Being a mother, I also appreciated your lovely Mother's Day post. I too don't like A LOT of misc. non-Howell related info; but I also know how to use my delete key. Keep up the great work Jim. Thank you! Cindy
