    3. I just rec'd a email with no message, from Jean Crawford - [email protected]; with an attachment ATT00072.txt. I did not open it. When I tried to reply to the message even though addressed to her address, it came back to me, with the subject: Fw: Nice Letter. When I then put in the [email protected] address by hand the email was returned to me with no such address being known. Beware everyone, don't open any attachments!! Welcome to new cousins 2. Are you new to the family? 3. NEVER apologize for needing us! 4. RE: the Howell Research Room *** REMINDER: GIFTS FOR OUR FAMILY CHRISTMAS ARE DUE TO ME BY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30th *** If you're new or have lost your original message regarding this family event, let me know <[email protected]> and I'll send you a copy. TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire 4H family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Howell lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Howell ancestors or any of the 9 variant spellings we research that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. You have joined not just a list, but a family of cousins who are four teams of researchers combined into one family, the 4H. Although we are one family, we have two homesites and if you haven't visited these sites yet, you are encouraged to do so ~ Home for the HOWELL-L, HOWELLS-SOUTHERN-L, and HOWLE-L is the Howell Research Room (otherwise known as the HRR) which opened May 28th. You'll find it located at <http://geocities.com/howell_research>. While not large in size yet, this site is to become a clearinghouse dedicated to global research of the Howell[s] surname and all her variant spellings. You're invited to submit material for display at the HRR. Simply let me know you want to house material there and what it is. We can display anything, provided it doesn't involve living persons. Contact me at <[email protected]>. Home for the HOWELL-SURNAME-L is the Edward Howell Family Association site at <http://www.ehfa.org>. This is a site dedicated to descendants of Edward Howell of Southampton, Long Island, New York. There you'll find an online transcription of "Descendants of Edward Howell (1584-1655) of Westbury Manor, Marsh Gibbon, Buckinghamshire, [England], and Southampton, Long Island, New York," Second Edition by Dr. David Faris. Web mistress for the EHFA site is Kristen Howell <[email protected]>. ARE YOU NEW TO THE FAMILY? For those cousins who joined us in the last 24 hours, the family is currently getting ready for its first family Christmas. We have a Christmas tree inside the HRR that can be reached by clicking on the "To the Tree!" button on the front page of our home. Opening of gifts will take place on Christmas Day (after Santa's arrival). If you'd like to participate in our first Christmas, send me a message <[email protected]> and I'll send you the guidelines. NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR NEEDING US! Within the past couple days we had a cousin turn to us with some very painful news. In her message she apologized. Cousins, when you have news of a sort that you feel the *need* to turn to the family, NEVER, BUT NEVER do you have to apologize to us nor should you. If you feel close enough to us as a family that you need to tell us all something that painful, you are very welcome to. I know, I know... this is a genealogy forum first. You're right, it is. But it's the *family* that builds that forum; and we've all come a very, very long way from the scrapping and argumentative group of strangers that once was. We've bonded together ~ begun building memories. We've begun to know each other personally ~ something that has enabled us to become this family that we are. With bonding, occasionally an emotional "need" develops in some of the people. This occurrence happens only in very few circumstances behind this medium of computers, monitors and messages. Well family ... it's happening to us. We've become an extremely special online family. :) So, if one of the cousins feels so close s/he feels that need to turn to us, please support that cousin and let him/her know we're here. And if you're that person, NEVER apologize for turning to those for whom you care. Particularly due to all our messages being in public archives, discussions of this nature can always be taken behind the scenes, offlist, once the initial announcement has been made. We are family, and we should stand together as one. RE: THE HOWELL RESEARCH ROOM Have you not been able to see our Christmas pages yet? Well, last night I received a message from GeoCities, the domain where our home sits with a possible reason why. Here it is: "Dear GeoCities Member, "Congratulations, http://www.geocities.com/howell_research seems to be very popular and has been receiving a large amount of traffic. Our records indicate that you're using more than the allotted amount of data transfer we provide for a free web site, which is 3 gigabytes per month (measured on an hourly basis). That means that during the past few days we had to temporarily turn your site off to keep the bandwidth within this limit. "What can I do? "Keep in mind that large files such as images and multimedia files can effect your data transfer greatly. A single web page that contains 200,000 bytes of images will only be able to be viewed about 20-25 times an hour. By keeping your file sizes and page sizes as small as possible, you can maximize the amount of page views your site can produce. [NOTE: I've reduced all Christmas graphics files to as low a byte-size as I dare, if they're to come out nice-looking to our visiting public.] "You can also upgrade your site to one of our new premium services, GeoCities Pro or GeoCities Webmaster. These packages allow for 10 and 20 gigabytes of data transfer per month, and also give you the option of purchasing unlimited data transfer so your site will always be accessible. These packages also enable you to run an ad-free site at your own domain name (for example, www.howell_research.com) AND get matching email accounts at that domain (like [email protected]_research.com). "For more information about our new packages, please visit http://geocities.yahoo.com/ps/info3 Upgrading your current GeoCities site to one of our new premium packages is simple. You don't have to move ANY of your files, and your current GeoCities web address will continue to work in addition to your domain. "If you'd prefer not to receive this notice in the future, just go to http://geocities.yahoo.com/opt/bwemail to take your name off of the notify list. Of course, our servers will continue to monitor your site's data usage and turn it off if it exceeds the limits. Thank you, Yahoo! GeoCities http://geocities.yahoo.com/" After Christmas we'll need to give thought to what we're going to do with our home. Do I leave it at GeoCities and risk our pages not loading because of too much traffic? Do I move? Since this is OUR home, this will be a family decision. I will not arbitrarily move us and your data to just anywhere in cyberspace. OUR material builds our home and makes it what it is, therefore it should be OUR decision as to what to do. If you have ideas on this issue, I'm willing to listen <[email protected]> OR use the CHAT: forum. The pages on our site have been viewed an aggregate total of 11,451 times already! This is BIG! Our front door pages (the one with the study window usually on it) may read only 2700+, but those pages are definitely being read. OUR CHRISTMAS TREE Okay cousins, have any of you noticed that we have family members who can't wait till Christmas? They've been snooping around under the tree! Now we ALL know that there are package rattlers and gift squishers in our midst!!! LOL I'm glad to see we have cousins who certainly enjoy their tree! <g> And with our curious cousins and my empty coffee cup I now must say... Family ... it's what we're all about. Thank you for allowing me to spend this time with you today. I wish each of you a week filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love and inner peace. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. 1. [HOWELL] CHAT: CHRISTMAS SEASON HAS BEGUN AT THE HRR
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi cousins, The 4H is stepping into our first holiday season together as a family... This is just a quick message to let you all know that our home is now ready for the Christmas season. When you arrive at the front to our site <http://www.geocities.com/howell_research>, you'll see the start of it. All the links are set and ready. Two things I should mention ~ 1.) The site is best viewed on Internet Explorer with the 800x600 setting, although it will also work with Netscape. 2.) Using Internet Explorer will garner you THREE popup errors on each and every page now in addition to the two commercial popups in the corner! >:( This is not the result of my HTML coding, but the coding of GeoCities. There's nothing I can do to rid ourselves of those irritating little suckers. Other than the above, please let me know your comments ~ good or bad. If most of you dislike the front page, I'll set another one up. The image I was trying to project this time was one of sophisticated-elegance. (For some reason, that's the image I have of the Howell line. <g>) Next year the theme *may* be different; who knows?? A reminder (which you'll get again tomorrow at the Coffee) ~ Christmas gifts for our family Christmas are due to me no later than next Friday, November 30th. Are you new to the family and need a copy of the Christmas guidelines? Email me at <[email protected]> and let me know. I wish you all a SUPER, SUNNY Saturday! :) Colleen

    1. [HOWELL] my answer to 'Happy Thanksgiving'
    2. Wilma
    3. I guess we all are touched by tragedy at one time or the other in our lives - What happened in New York is so very sad - I ache for the people effected - I am thankful for my children - all six of em'- my 2nd son Kenneth died 8 years ago on his 44th birthday - I am thankful I am his mother - He was in Viet Nam and suffered the after effects of that place. He was a wonderful son - I am thankful for my first born son Ryan, he too was in Viet Nam [black beret, river rats] - he was where they sprayed agent orange - today my son is dying of cancer - his body is full of tumors from that awful chemical they used over there- his liver is filled with the invader - I am thankful I was chosen to be his mother - altho my heart is breaking - I am thankful I have had him 54 years - WE don't know how long he has, it is moving thru out his body like a wild fire. Three weeks ago he was bailing hay for his cattle, today he is laying in bed, jaundice is taking over, he is starting to be disoriented - He said, "mom, I'm a strong person, and yet I am weak as a kitten" That was 2 weeks ago - I am thankful for my 2 daughters - and my other 2 sons - and my husband who is our main stay right now - We will be there for each other- I am thankful that my son Ryan has a wonderful wife and family that love and are there for him. This is a hard Thanksgiving - this year my tears just won't stop. Ryan wants me to write 'a mothers story' about him, re: Viet Nam, agent orange - and bring it up to date. I have contacted the proper people and they are helping me- get his story out. This is so wrong - I should not be loosing a vibrant man [I call him my cowboy]- nor should his wife be made a widow - I'm sorry but I see so much 'Happy Thanksgiving' sent to the list, and I just had to tell you how thankful I am for my children - Wilma Fleming Haynes [email protected] Hi cousins, The turkey has been on since 10:00 a.m. and I finished watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade over an hour ago ... The holidays have arrived! :) While I was watching the parade though, I gave quite a bit of thought to what I, or anyone in the U.S. right now, had to be thankful for. We're still healing and in recovery, but there MUST be something for us all to be happy about. What, though? 1. We're still free! The U.S. was attacked all right, but we weren't annihilated. Lady Liberty still stands. 2. Our flag still waves with pride and our eagle still soars in determined resolve! The U.S. was slapped but good; it's just too bad those who did this to us didn't realize just who they were messing with. They probably would have given second thought to their actions. You'd have thought history would have taught them, though. 3. Our country came together as ONE voice, one family, and the world joined us. 4. Most of us still have our inlife family and friends ~ our inlife support systems ~ our inlife reasons for being... 5. We still have each other! Some of us may still feel broken, we may be struggling for answers, we may still be filled with anguish, pain and/or anger ~ but we still have each other to turn to ... global cousins who have found each other and come together as the ancestral family that we are. 6. We still have our health ~ shaky though it may be for some of us, it's brought us all to today and each other. And there are 5 more things I'm thankful for, but they're more personal more to me... 7.) My husband and children - he's getting older and so are the kids. I think I'll keep them all. 8.) The love of my cherished husband, Bruno, and our five children. 9.) Brenda, my very bestest friend! She's the sister of my soul without whom I think more of my inlife "tragedies" would be much worse! 10.) Every day that I wake up; one day I won't. Can you add at least five of your own "personal thankfuls" where I've added mine? I hope so. I wish each of you a bountiful Thanksgiving filled with inner peace, love and joy! Colleen

    3. I am interested in WILLIAM HOWELL- he was my 12th gr grandfather, along with is wife Ann EYRE- Did anyone answer your questions? I missed it if they did - would you mind sharing with me? I didn't know Ann was his 2nd wife - I notice you have her name as (EYRE) (HAMPTON) was she a widow when she married William? Exactly which church is it that William Howell (1520-1528) is buried in: St Peter and St Paul in Wingrave or St Marys in Hardwick? Seldom do two sources say the same as to the contents of his will or which church he was buried in. I would imagine anyone who has taken the tour over to England has seen his tomb and would know for sure? 2. I am having much difficulty with the 2d wife of William Howell: Anne (Eyre) (Hampton) - somewhere along the way some years back I began to show that she was of Wedhampton, a daughter of John Eyre and Ellin Croker who was d/o John Croker. But in trying to put together now information I have on the Eyre families of Wedhampton and Great Chalfield, I cannot find a spot for this John Eyre let alone any wife named Ellin or a daughter Anne. 1. [HOWELL] cmmercial vendors
    2. Shee Max
    3. Colleen, I understand your feelings about com. vendors. They have taken what came out of family bibles and families information to sell and I am very much against that. No one should have to buy their family lines which was given by their line. I am not aware of, nor have I seen any of them searching in the dusty old books. I could be wrong. These companies gather from us and sell to them. They have seen a begine hobby and turned it into their own personal business. I myself have seen info I gave freely to a "cousin" put on another's web site with out my permission or to ask if it was correct or what site or who I got it from. And there it is forever. Maybe it will be snagged later and sold in a bundle who knows. We share with each other. That is what family is all about. Or you give to us, you have free access, but everyone else will pay for your given information. We all need to watch out for each other. Better saafe than sorry I say. I think Ancestry.com is the worst. If you go on many sites to search if you aren't careful you will end up on their "search" page. It doesn't say ancestry.com it will say something else. Then the hours you have spent searching end up :please subscribe to have access to this information. And back you go. Time wasted with their pitch. Or they offer you free days/weeks and all you have to do is give your credit card. Maybe you will forget to cancel the subscription after your free days are up and wola!! You now pay for your ancestors information gathered from that family bible or where ever. Keep up the good work, you are appreciated, Sheila _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

    1. [HOWELL] [Fwd: Family Tree Maker 9 warning]
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi everyone, I've just received the following message from Paul Burchfield, Genealogy.com Technical Support in response to the FTM version 9 warning I issued in Sunday's Coffee. It seems that the information I was given and passed along to all of you was inaccurate. I do apologize for "causing a lot of unnecessary angst among people." (see below) Please understand, mine was meant only to warn and alert FTM users about yet another possible attempt to encroach in our personal lives by a commercial enterprise. Most of you already know how deeply I feel about our "watching out" for each other as family, peers, cousins, friends, etc. I received the alert from someone I trusted, and still do. As an already reported non-user of FTM, I believed my informant had already done his/her "homework." Please forgive. As I stated earlier, my intent was purely to be helpful and alert you; that was all. I post Paul's message to you in its entirety. I wish you all a WONDERFUL week! :) Colleen -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Family Tree Maker 9 warning Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2001 20:34:48 -0800 From: "Paul Burchfield" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Colleen, A member of the ORTON-L list passed along a copy of a message you sent to the list where you passed along a warning about Family Tree Maker version 9. Unfortunately, what you saw and passed on is inaccurate. With one person seeing it on one list an then passing it along to another and so on, it's causing a lot of unnecessary angst among people. The issue is not a nefarious one at all. That software is used during beta testing as a tool to help us know what our testers have been doing (to make sure we test enough in all of the areas of the program). it also helps us identify what was happening and what went wrong if during testing the program crashes. During the beta testing period, we periodically ask our beta testers to send to us by attaching the file that is created showing this information to an email. It is not sent to us automatically. Usually when we are done testing and create the final version used to duplicate for sale, we replace the active program file that creates the file that gathers the testing information with an inactive version that doesn't gather the information. Somewhere along the line that part was not done when we shipped version 9. We found this more than a month ago and at that point in time created a knowledge base article. We also made the replacement, inactive program file available for download so people could use it to replace the active one. When we later discovered a problem with Family Tree Maker and created a downloadable update for it, we also included as a part of that the inactive aqueduct file. Because someone didn't ask us about this nor did they look at the existing information we had on this topic, incorrect and inflammatory messages have been created and passed around. It's unfortunate that the originator of the message nor those who are passing it along didn't come to us and ask about it. I would appreciate knowing from whom you received the message. I would like to make sure that they understand what the real issue is. Sincerely, Paul Burchfield, Genealogy.com Technical Support Online Help Center - http://www.genealogy.com/help/index.html

    1. [HOWELL] Howell of Wedon: 1573 Bill of Complaint
    2. >From NYGBR of 1897:85 - part of "Howell Genealogical Items" collected by George R. Howell = I find information on a Bill of complaint by John Howell of Wedon, Co. Bucks .............. what catches my eye is: the pedigree of the [Howell] family is given in this bill of complaint which is briefly mentioned in the article published - It mentions that William "then married Anne Dyer, * [*Defendant says her name was Anne Hampton] - has anyone been able to find/look at/copy: "From Chancery B. and A. Elizabeth H. h. 20, No. 27, A.D. 1573 this bill of complaint? I am wondering if (and hoping) there would be mention made of Anne being the daughter of ................ "Dyer"/Eyre?; despite several searches on the interent for information about Eyre all I I find are Eyres before the correct time period of after - mostly after, a John Eyre born 1571, if I recall. Anyway, much too late to be a brother of our Anne the 2d wife of Wm Howell ; Anne (Eyre) (Hampton) - I am hoping someone has found some parish records to prove/disprove this. I have not been able to access FHL records for a few years and not able to get over to Salt Lake to check their records. I may have some EYRE family information to use if I can connect it to the 2d wife of our William. Olive Hoffman Sun City, CA

Welcome to new cousins 2. Family Discovery is at it again 3. Family Tree Maker, v. 9: a warning 4. Did you know ...? *** REMINDER: GIFTS FOR OUR FAMILY CHRISTMAS ARE DUE TO ME BY NOVEMBER 30th *** If you're new or have lost your original message regarding this family event, let me know <[email protected]> and I'll send you a copy. Webmistress for the EHFA site is Kristen Howell <[email protected]>. FAMILY DISCOVERY IS AT IT AGAIN These people just don't give up, do they? It seems they've begun a new campaign, this time under their GenRelated pseudonym. Please pass the word so we can thwart yet another of their attempts. Newbies, those of us who are experienced Web genealogists, know already to steer clear, far and wide, from anything sent by Family Discovery or their sister sites, one being GenRelated. Now, you need to know it, too. These people are scammers. Are you new to the family? Please send a message to me <[email protected]> and I'll send a copy of my all-too-familiar messages regarding these people. Should you receive a message from <FamilyDiscovery.com> or <[email protected]>, please forward it to me with the headers. Although it's over a year-old now, an ongoing effort is being done to get them shut down. (Actually, as a combined force, we've been more successful at getting them kicked off from their various ISPs than anything else. At least when they're offline, they can't rip anyone off!) FAMILY TREE MAKER, VERSION 9: A WARNING It has come to my attention that Family Tree Maker may be up to no good with the latest version (9) of their genealogy program. Since I don't use FTM with any degree of proficiency (I use PAF), I'm passing along this warning by way of copy and paste. Those of you who use FTM will want to read this carefully: "Mattel, the parent company of FTM has included tracking software in Version 9 which keeps track of everything you do on the internet and sends a log of your surfing habits to Mattel every time you log on. The log file is called "aqueduct" and can be found in the root directory of your C drive. I have deleted the file and gone back to version 8. "I discovered {this] quite by accident. In an unrelated attempt to fix one of my screwups on my hardrive, I discovered the file called "aqueduct" and opened it as I didn't know what it was. I discovered that it was a log of all my surfing habits and I now know, it covered the period from when I installed the FTM 9 upgrade to the date I discovered it and deleted it. I didn't realize it was a FTM by product until I tried to open FTM (after deleting aqueduct) and I got an error message saying "Aqueduct" was missing -- it seems that without the file, FTM version 9 will not run at all. Since I detest tracking software of any kind, I uninstalled FTM version 9 and reinstalled FTM version 8. Note: You will have to open and rename your database backup copy as any database file that you opened and stored in version 9 will be useless." I won't mention the person's name here since our messages go into public archives. However, if you use FTM and want to know who has issued this warning, please write me offline and I'll pass the address along to you. Or, if there are many of you wanting the name and email addy, will send your names and addies to the person so s/he can post to you. One way or another, you will be put in contact, if that's your desire. :) DID YOU KNOW ...? ... turkeys originated in North and Central America, and evidence indicates that they have been around for over 10 million years? ... that out of the 102 Pilgrims who came to America in the Mayflower, just 51 survived to participate in the "First Thanksgiving?" Ninety Wampanoag Indians were at that first feast. ... that the first Thanksgiving lasted for three days and was called a "harvest feast" by Massasoit, the Wampanoag Indian chief? ... that the Pilgrims didn't use forks at the first feast (Thanksgiving) in 1621? They used a knife, a spoon, a large napkin and their fingers, and might have shared plates and drinking vessels. ... that according to the Guiness Book of World Records, the largest dressed weight (cooked, with dressing) recorded for a turkey is 39.09 kg (86 lb.) on December 12, 1989? (I wonder how long it took to cook?) ... more than 45 million turkeys are cooked and eaten during Thanksgiving? ... that nobody knows for certain that turkeys were eaten at the first feast? Then how *did* the turkey become the main course? One story tells of how Queen Elizabeth of 16th century England was chowing down on roast goose during a harvest festival. When news was delivered to her that the Spanish Armada had sunk on it way to attack her beloved England, the queen was so pleased that she order a second goose to celebrate the great news. Thus, the goose became the favorite bird at harvest time in England. When the Pilgrims arrived in America from England, roasted turkey replaced roasted goose as the main cuisine because wild turkeys were more abundant and easier to find than geese. ... that it was Benjamin Franklin who said, "I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen as the representation of our country... the turkey is a much more respectable bird and a true original native of America?" ... that George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789, but it was President Lincoln who, in 1863, made the day official by proclaiming the last Thursday in November as a national day of "Thanksgiving?" ... that “Jingle Bells,” the popular Christmas song, was actually written for Thanksgiving? The song was composed in 1857, by James Pierpont, and was originally called “One Horse Open Sleigh.” Family ... it's what we're all about ~ and for the first time, we step into the holidays together ... as a family. Thank you for allowing me to spend this time with you today. I wish each of you a week filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love and inner peace. Happy Thanksgiving! :) ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'

    1. [HOWELL] RootsWeb list mail down
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi everyone, For those of you who posted to the list earlier today, Rootsweb list mail was down for approximately 12 hours from about 3:30 AM to about 3:30 PM MST today (Sunday, 11/18/01). The unfortunate part is that any mail sent to the lists during that time period was lost since it wasn't queued. So you will need to resend anything you sent that didn't get through to the lists. I'll be resending today's Sunday Morning Coffee out directly following this message. I wish you all a WONDERFUL week! 1. [HOWELL] William Howell/Ann Eyre ?
    2. After some time away from my Howell research, I am spending some time working on it again and trying to properly key in my information and sources and I have found something lacking: What is the source of information and/or documentation that is needed to connect William Howell to Anny Eyre - I see nothing in what I have gathered and am hoping for more than: p 10 & 13 of the Howell book and p 27 of The Genealogist XII, the Visitation of Wiltshire, 1565. I do not have the Howell book done by Faris - never could find a copy to purchase but when I used to go over to Salt Lake every year I would copy certain pp to use once I got home - so perhaps I have missed something in this hit and miss way of getting copies of pages on my Howell line?
