    1. [HOWELL] COLLEEN'S FEBRUARY CHALLENGE
    2. Heather
    3. Some of you might remember my search for Abraham and Nathan Howell. I've made a few discoveries - but am still missing a piece. In a very old letter that I found in the Morristown, NJ Library, written by my gg grandfather Byron C. Howell, Sr, he said that his ancestor was Israel Howell, son of Matthew Howell, son of John Howell, son of Edward Howell of Southampton. Looking at all of Israel's children, the only one that fit the information that I have is Nathan, born in 1728, who seemingly falls off the face of the earth. Is it possible that he moved to Chester, NJ, and purchased land there in 1760 - see "Chester, New Jersey, A Scrapbook of History" by Frances Greenidge, pg. 19. If he is the same Nathan as mine (who bought land in Chester) - born 1728-9 and died in Morristown, NJ, 1802, then here is the rest of it... 1st: Nathan Howell (b.1728 d.1802-3) & Sarah ? Children: Isaac, Israel, Caleb, Abraham d. 1821, Joshua, Joseph, Sarah 2nd: Abraham Howell & Charity Tappan (Topping) Children: Jeremiah b.1771, Stephen b.1773, Abraham b.1778, Huldah b.1783, Sarah b.1790, Caleb b.1796, Alanson b.14 Sept 1800 3rd: Alanson Tappan Howell & Mary Larison (first wife) (she died shortly after they were married) Alanson Tappan Howell & Celestia Labar (LeBarre) m. 1824 (second wife) Children: Hannibal b.1826, Darwin b. 1828, Wellington b.1830, Lucinda b. 1832, Marion b.1834, Elizabeth b.1837, Myron b.1839, Byron b.1840, Tappan b. 1843, Jane b.1844, Milo b.1846, Addison b.1847 4th: Byron C. Howell, Sr. & Helen Elizabeth Clark Children: Byron Clark, Jr. (more, but no names...) Byron C. Howell, Jr. & Hannah Rose Etta Jacobs m.11/28/1890 Children: Alice Gertrude b.11/28/1891, Helen E. b.1894 d. at 13 mo., Edward Van Howell b. 4/22/1900 5th: Edward Van Howell & Frances Kenney Howell m.7/20/1923 Edward is my grandfather. Can someone tell me if these Nathans are one and the same? Thanks! Heather Vance

    1. [HOWELL] James HOWELL born Stoke on Trent, UK
    2. Linda Fawcett
    3. Hello Colleen, Will this one do? James HOWELL married , Susan ALLEN at St. Andrew's Parish Church, Manchester on 25th February 1877.His age was given as 21 but I do not believe this. His father was also James HOWELL - cabinetmaker. I have him on the April 1881 census at 12 Holland St, Newton, in Manchester, aged 23, born Stoke on Trent, Stafford, England, with Susan, and they were lodging with John and Ellen Cavil. Ellen was born in Wolverhampton, Stafford, and I suspect that she may have been a HOWELL before her marriage. I have him on the April 1891 census at 13 Tame St, New Cross, Manchester, aged 34 with 5 of his children, Mary Jane, Annie, Minnie, Maria and James. He died at 60 Russel St., Ancoats, Manchester, UK, on 16th November 1902, aged 44 years, occupation - carter. His daughter Doris aged 8 months was next entry in the death register. Out of 8 children that I know of (and I suspect a few more were born) only Annie, Minnie and Maria survived childhood. I do not know what happened to Mary Jane, who was 9 on the 1891, but all the others died as babies, as was normal for the time and area!! I have tried twice for birth certificates from Stoke on Trent, but both were the wrong father. Also I cannot find his father, James on the 1881 census. I hope that this epistle may strike a note with someone. Best wishes, Linda in Cheshire, UK

    3. If anyone can claim a Levi C. Howell who died in Quincy, Illinois on 10 June 1865, I have a copy of his last will and testament. It names his siblings, Lewis B. Howell, Cornelia M. Howell Hume, Thomas B. Howell, Orlando Howell, Ezra Howell and Sarah J. Howell Broomfield. At the time I purchaesd this will, I thought it might be one of my Howells, but further research proved it was not the case. I'll be happy to send a copy of the will, which is 3 pages long, if you'd like to post it in the Howell Research Room. 3. All Right,Colleen, Here is my line again. Sarah To the Howell Family List My Howell line is very short. Catherine Howell m James Crawford 2 March 1762 at Christ Church, Phil., Penn. He d 1803 and she d 1815 both in Rockbridge Co VA. They had 10 children and most or all of them born in PA. Her father is said to be Thomas and her mother Catherine but I have never found any reason that that information was given. Mrs Clementine Railey said that he was from Bybery and she was from Southern Twp Montgomery Co PA. She said that Catherine Howell was Welch: spoke with a Welch accent. She also said that "Catherine Howell is said to have been an intelligent women, fond of reading, especially history, and would remain up after the family had retired, to read." If anyone has information that will make this list longer I would certainly appreciate it. Sarah

    3. Hello I am looking for the family of Lillian Howell and Henry L. Lane of Arapahoe Co. Colo in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Lillian was born in Mo. and was the daughter of Cason Howell. He was also in Colo. in the 1800's and is buried in Denver. Lillian and Henry had a son, Ora C. Lane. In the 1910 census he is shown married to Belle and they had a daughter. Henry Lane was the brother of my ggrandfather. Since I have found nothing on the Lane side I am hoping that I might find something from the Howell family. Thanks for you time and help. Beverly

    3. I'm new to the list, so please bear with me! We are looking for Robert Howell, c. 1915-1978, Pike &/or Floyd Cos., KY. Robert (possibly Rob) was the father of Okie Howell, Sr. (1930-1959). Robert was married to Hailey Osborn (spellings vary) Hailey is buried at Greenberry-Hall Cemetery near McDowell, KY, as is Okie, Sr. We think Robert's father was Anthony Howell, b. 1869/70. This is my husband's family and I really want to find out all I can for him, his children and now grandchildren. The families were evidently estranged in the 1940's and more so when Okie, Sr. died. I don't want to dredge up any unpleasant memories, but just to give my wonderful husband the peace of really knowing who he is.
