    2. Lew HOWELL: I have red head HOWELLs too who are also related to Varina HOWELL DAVIS. Robert is a name used in my father's and his father's generations. I've always thought that my family came to Missouri through Kentucky from Virginia but maybe that is incorrect. My brick wall is John Mell HOWELL born 1827 in Maysville, Mason County, KY. I have no siblings or parents. I wonder if there is a connection between yours and mine? Jack HOWELL [email protected]

English, as used in England, has at least 3 or 4 major roots but American English has even more. The only important rule in genealogy post is Who? When? Where? If those three items are neglected proper punctuation does no good at all. I'm lookin' fer Benjamin Franklin HOWELL in Simpson Co. MS 1840 - 1890. Grant W. 2. I read your post with interest. I to, am interested in the type of grammatical errors made on the computer. Do you think you made a difference? So often those who butcher the English language just don't care and by this time, will not try to learn any better or to punctuate any more accurately. Our language can be so beautiful. I should thank you for trying. Again, do you think it makes a difference or will the same people continue their lackadaisical ways? [email protected]

    1. [HOWELL] Re: HOWELL-D Digest V02 #40
    2. Here's my contribution of facts, and my continuing plea. Lewis Howell was born in 1778 in Wayne County, NC. He was most likely the son of John Howell, b. 1753 in Wayne County, NC, who served in the RW. Sometime before 1798, in NC, Lewis married somebody. We have never been able to find her name. In 1811, Lewis, "wife, and 6 children" were mentioned on a passport issued in Milledgeville, GA for passage through the Creek Nation to "the Western Country." Lewis and his older sons and their families show up on the 1820 Dallas County, Alabama Census. In the 1830 Census, they are in adjacent Perry County, Alabama. His brother, Ira Ezekiel Howell, was in Marengo County, AL. Lewis died in January 1840, in Perry County, AL. From his estate papers, we know that Lewis's wife died in January 1839, same place (Her name is not mentioned once, in 138 pages of estate documents). Lewis had estate settlements in Perry County, AL and Monroe County, MS. We find no record of their burials or graves in Perry County, AL. DOES ANY OF THIS RING A BELL, ENOUGH TO IDENTIFY THE WIFE OF LEWIS HOWELL FROM NC TO AL? Some of her descendants have been looking for her for 20 years. No luck with her, but with great success in finding numerous descendant lines from Lewis. The search goes on. Thanks for your time. George Howell, in Alabama

    3. I can contribute something on Varina. I found a picture of her with a little information. It was in a book in our county library. I did not copy all of the information on the book but the bottom of the page (page 30) says "1846: Portrait of the Nation". Here is what was written under the picture. "Married in February 1845 to widower Jefferson Davis, who was eighteen years her senior, Varian Howell (1826-1906) was almost immediately introduced to public life when her husband was elected to Congress from Mississippi. Traveling to Washington in December, the Davises had a horrendous journey by steamboat, sled, and stagecoach--'three weeks of peril, discomfort, and intense cold.' Varina wrote, 'during which we were obliged to eat our life-long supply of worst with maple syrup for a condiment.' They took rooms in a boarding house on Pennsylvania Avenue, where they ate their meals with others of like political persuasion. Mrs. Davis later recounted that she was kept busy assisting her husband in his correspondence with his constituents. Varina Howell Davis by John Wood Dodge (1807-1893), watercolor on ivory. 1849. 3. Marvin, While I agree with you on the name presentation.. Identity theft is a growing problem on the internet.. I understand there were over 90,000 folks who had their identity stolen last year.. Law enforcement and security experts tell us to not give out over the net... UNLESS you know who you are dealing with..things like: Your full name Your address, even your town and state Your phone number Your Social Security number Your credit card numbers, etc Any information concerning the above on living relatives.. People who have had their identity stolen have spent years trying to get their lives out of the mess.. these thieves had left them in and most cases so far in debt... that their lives were ruined.. Newbies should be aware that...... Security is our own responsibility!! Jackie Researching the families of: Morgan, Brewer, Howell, Ballard, Beck, Ricker, Knight, Woods, Simmons and Buffington ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 11, 2002 10:33 PM Subject: [HOWELL] It's HOWELLS, not HOWELL'S To: All the Howells and researchers From: Marvin Howell Here's a friendly reminder to our family from the editorial writer for this list, and the former editor of the column, "HOWELLing." We are the "Howells," not the "Howell's." Avoid making the mistake of using an apostrophe to the make a family name plural. More than one Howell is written as Howells. More than one Johnson, is Johnsons. Example: "There are many Howells, Bushes, Johnsons, Burtons, Joneses, and Clarks in Middleton." Write it "Howell's" only to show ownership, as "Joseph Howell's residence was in Morrow County." "The Clarks' lineage can be traced back to Benjamin Clark." If someone uses this error in a subject line, correct the error in YOUR subject line before you reply. Avoid insulting a family by calling them the Howell's, the Bush's, or the Burton's, and perpetuating the error in post after post. Another tip: Give your full name, town, and state when posting to a genealogy list. This is very helpful, and the polite thing to do. We wouldn't think of just signing "Mary" or "Carl" from nowhere, when we make an inquiry by US mail. People don't like to read anonymous letters--or anonymous e-mail. And it's often very helpful to learn the surname and location of the writer, and can result in other contacts with helpful genealogy information. AOL and many other servers provide a "signature" feature that affixes name, address, website, and even a quotation, to each e-mail message that we send, so that we don't have to type it each time. Try it! Your readers will appreciate it! AOL and many other servers provide a "signature" feature that affixes name, address, website, and even a quotation, to each e-mail message that we send, so that we don't have to type it each time. Try it! Your readers will appreciate it! 1. [HOWELL] It's HOWELLS, not HOWELL'S
    2. To: All the Howells and researchers From: Marvin Howell Here's a friendly reminder to our family from the editorial writer for this list, and the former editor of the column, "HOWELLing." We are the "Howells," not the "Howell's." Avoid making the mistake of using an apostrophe to the make a family name plural. 2. Lewis Howell
    3. Rednap Howell was a leader or advisor to the leaders of the Regulators in North Carolina shortly before the RW. A number of them were hanged by the British, but Rednap avoided that fate. He was a brother of Richard Howell, RW patriot and governor of NJ. This puts him in the same family as Varina Howell, wife of Jefferson Davis and first lady of the CSofA. My father and several of his aunts had bright red hair, so I'm waiting for the DNA site to open. 1. Re: [HOWELL] re: Howell's from NY/NJ/IN
    2. My information on Mathew Howell ( I've always seen it spelled with one t) places him in Ohio Co., West Virginia & Belmont Co., Ohio. The will of Susannah Henthorn, Mathew's mother-in-law, dated 1799 in Ohio Co., was witnessed by a Wiliam Howell & David Howell probable relatives of Mathew. There was also an Aaron Howell who married an Elizabeth White in Ohio Co. in 1797. Mathew had a son named Aaron(probably named after the older Aaron) born about 1792, who's wife was named Elizabeth born about 1792/93. My information gave her father's name as Andrew White. A lot of these families kept using the same names every generation and married into the same families every generation, so there could have been two Aaron Howell/Elizabeth White marriages. An Andrew White was one of the witnesses to the Susannah Henthorn will. I seen two different names given for the wife of Andrew White, Elizabeth Cissel and Elizabeth Neiswonger, so there may have been more then one Andrew White. Mathew grandson Hamilton Howell, the youngest son of Aaron, settled in Perry Co., Indiana, sometime between 1872 ,when his daughter Anna was born in Missouri, and 1877 when his son Oliver was born at Lilly Dale in Perry Co. The Philip Howell family was already living there at the time and I have'nt found a connection in the male line between the two families. Eliza Smith Cronin, the daughter of Mathew's daughter Mary Howell Smith, also settled in Perry Co., after the Civil War with her family. I have no information on the parents of Mathew or where he came from.
