    1. [HOWELL] Questions of Howells from Joe Bower letter
    2. C Conrad
    3. Hello Howell Listers: I have copied Joe Bower's letter attached as it is the beginning of my line, also, and I would like more information on it, as well as contact with fellow cousins. 1. Ruth Howell m. John Phipps (my great x 4 grandparents) 2. their son Hugh Phipps married Edith Stansbury 3. their grandson John Andrew Phipps m. Martha Jane Landreth 4. their great grandson Calvin Wiley Phipps m. Flora Ella Dixon 5. Their great great grandson John Lester Phipps m. Cora Ella Ward. (my grandparents) Questions: Who was Ruth Howell's father? Was it William Howell m. Sarah Halsey or William Howell m. Eliz. Hash? Is this proven? Where are they buried? Sarah Halsey's father is buried near our NC home as well as John Andrew and Martha Jane Landreth Phipps. Joe Bower: Please email me privately too about the BAKERS. My great x3 grandfather in the Phipps line married BAKER. Thanks! carole in NYC Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2002 06:47:28 -0600 > From: "Jos. W. Jackie, Try the Mormon site as Phillip Sr. and Phillip Jr. are my g.g. grandfather and g,grandfather and my Daughter had went back to Tennessee and North Carolina checking records a few years ago and we passed it on to My sister who belongs to the Mormon Church. Her husband connected it up to back to the 1300"s and I believe he put it in the Church records. Hope it's all correct and what you need is there! Bill Howell, [email protected]

    1. [HOWELL] Correction to this morning's 4H SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi everyone, I have just been notified by one of the Obituary Look Volunteers web site that I spoke about in this morning's Sunday Morning Coffee is slightly incorrect. An "l" was dropped, so the correct URL for this site should be: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~obitl I apologize for this inadvertent error, but I'm *very* glad that Anne Messenger brought this to my attention. Thanks, Anne! You are so appreciated! :) Colleen

    3. ) ( ( ) Good Morning Family! ( \ .-.,--^--. ( Come on in. . . \* ) \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . .=|=. \| |// ...and we even have decaf, |~'~| | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! | | \ / _|___|_ ------ (_______) Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. Flames and flame wars 3. The Web isn't all bad 4. Neat links TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire 4H family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Howell lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Howell ancestors or any of the 9 variant spellings we research that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. You have joined not just a list, but a family of cousins who are four teams of researchers combined into one family, the 4H. Although we are one family, we have two homesites and if you haven't visited these sites yet, you are encouraged to do so ~ Home for the HOWELL-L, HOWELLS-SOUTHERN-L, and HOWLE-L is the Howell Research Room (otherwise known as the HRR) which opened May 28th. You'll find it located at <http://howellresearch.com>. While not large in size yet, this site is to become a clearinghouse dedicated to global research of the Howell[s] surname and all her variant spellings. You're invited to submit material for display at the HRR. Simply let me know you want to house material there and what it is. We can display anything, provided it doesn't involve living persons. Contact me at <[email protected]>. Home for the HOWELL-SURNAME-L is the Edward Howell Family Association site at <http://www.ehfa.org>. This is a site dedicated to descendants of Edward Howell of Southampton, Long Island, New York. There you'll find an online transcription of "Descendants of Edward Howell (1584-1655) of Westbury Manor, Marsh Gibbon, Buckinghamshire, [England], and Southampton, Long Island, New York," Second Edition by Dr. David Faris. Web mistress for the EHFA site is Kristen Howell <[email protected]>. You're welcome to share this Coffee with your genealogy friends and relatives provided it is without alterations ...and is complete as written. If they are not members of this list and would like to begin receiving the Coffee, they are now able to. Simply have them send a blank email to <[email protected]>. This is the sixth and last, in a series of Coffees dedicated to helping newbies adjust to computering genealogy. Next week I'll return to my regular format of ... well, most of you know ~ there IS no regular format! FLAMES AND FLAME WARS I've told you about some of THE worst things that can happen to you while on the Web ~ viruses, scam artists, spam... The last of what I call "the nasties" are flames and flame wars, and yes some of them are as bad as the name(s) sound. Flaming is what happens when someone says something hateful to one or more people on an email discussion list; someone gets angry and/or hurt, and words start flying back and forth. Pretty soon members of the list jump into it and within hours a flame war has begun. The list members stop talking and nobody wants to post for fear of being on the receiving end of a hateful message. Flame wars will destroy a list faster than anything else. Tender newbies, my 'survival lesson' for today is with regard to flames and flame wars: * Realize that body language and voice inflection are two very important tools removed from us as we all sit behind our monitors and read messages. We have only our words to be relied upon to carry the meanings of what we say. It's so easy for someone to take offense to something you hadn't intended as hurtful or inciting, and it happens every day. * Read and re-read your message to make sure what you're sending has clarity of meaning ~ that what you've typed won't be taken awry by someone else. * If YOU are angered or hurt by someone's words, please think twice before firing back on him/her, especially on the list. Many list managers have now insituted a policy whereby flaming someone is grounds for immediate removal from the list (I happen to be one of those managers) without a chance of returning from the suspension. Instead, send your message directly to the person and ask what the problem is. * Think THREE TIMES before sending a message meant to incite or hurt someone. Do you REALLY want YOUR good name on a message of hatred and meanness in the public archives? * While thinking those three times, read your message for effect. Would it hurt or anger YOU to be the recipient of your message? THE WEB ISN'T ALL BAD So much negativism! Isn't there anything GOOD to say? There sure is... For all of the people who would rip you off, send you spam and flame messages, there are probably 5,000 who would help you. As in real life however, the bad seems to rise to the top and hide the good. Not THIS time! :-D To have the final say, the good-deed-doers (ever see or read the "Wizard of Oz"?) :) will take over the rest of this Coffee. Below is a list of 20 sites I have used that I know people work extremely hard from their end to try to help all of us. The best way I can do that is to send you to their sites so you can see and judge for yourself. NEAT LINKS You've probably already discovered them, but just in case you're one of our brand-new newbies to computering genealogy, the following sites offer many helps ~ to include volunteer look-ups and research assistance ... all for free. Books We Own - <http://www.rootsweb.com/~bwo/index.html>. A list of resources owned by others who are willing to do lookups in them. Ellis Island Records - <www.ellisislandrecords.org/>. Obituary Lookup Volunteers - Rootsweb List - <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~obit/>. A list of people who are willing to do obituary lookups in their area. Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness - <http://raogk.rootsweb.com>. "The volunteers of this movement are agreeing once per month to either videotape cemeteries, etc., or to visit county courthouses in the county (or area of a country) they live. The cost to you would be reimbursement of costs incurred in granting your request (video tape, copy fees, etc.)". Slektsbiblioteket - <http://www.slektsbiblioteket.com/>. The largest Norwegian lookup service. More than 1,000 resources, more than 200 volunteers. USGenWeb Project - <http://www.usgenweb.org/thestates.html>. Looking for information on a specific county? This is the place to head for. The State sites are the jumping off points to get started on your research. At each State Site, you will find links to each County within that state, where you will find a wealth of county related information. On the County Sites, you can post queries to help you over that "brick wall." The work, building the site, gathering material to place there ~ all of it by volunteers. USGenWeb Project Archives - <http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/>. Offers actual transcriptions of public domain records. You will find copies of census records, marriage bonds, wills, and other public documents. WorldGenWeb Project - <http://worldgenweb.org/>. They're attempting to place genealogical information for every country in the world, and every region within each country, online ~ and its all being done by volunteers. If you are researching your emigrant ancestors, then this is a must-see website. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is absolutely no way I can list every site. The point I wanted to make with this extremely brief list is to let you know that no matter how many "baddies" there are who want to separate you from your money, no matter how many viruses plague us ... there are still so, so many people willing to help you and give freely of their time and resources to do exactly that. You have but to ask. A postscript here: please be sure to thank the volunteer who tries to help you. Since they all work for nothing, surely your thanks will go a long way toward letting them know their efforts are very appreciated, whether they're able to help you or not. :) Family ... it's what we're all about. I so enjoyed spending this time with you today. Thank you for sharing it with me. I wish each of you a week filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love and inner peace. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'

    3. Hi Stan, The name of the book is" Genealogies of West Virginia Families" from the West Virginia Historical Magazine Quarterly,1901-1905 Published by Clearfield. Standard Book No 0-8063-4692-2. Pages 555-557 You might be able to find the book through interlibrary loan at your local library, or purchase a subscription at Family Tree Maker. It runs about 50 dollars a year for their library access. Since I live about an hour a way from a library that is limited to primarily Texas family histories, the price of a subscribtion makes sense to me, but may be high for others. I hope this answers your question. They are entwined with the Boones... Dix... http://www.rootsweb.com/~moboonhs/howell/howell.html >> Hi, Dixie, Would you happen to know if this particular HOWELL group is connected with the Mary HOWELL, (daughter of Mary LANE whose 1st husband was James?/John? HOWELL and her 2nd husband was Henry FIELDING. Mary LANE was the daughter of (Captain) John LANE,) and Mary HOWELL married (Colonel) Charles Lilburne "Of the Byrd" LEWIS, Sr., (son of Elizabeth WARNER and John "Councillor" LEWIS,) whose family was in late 1600's/1700's Goochland, VA and then in Granville Co., NC. It is believed that my paternal 3rd great grandfather, Howell LEWIS, born: bet. 1782 - 1788 in Granville Co., VA is descended from this marriage of (Col.) Charles LEWIS and also from his brother, (Colonel) Robert "Of Belvoir" LEWIS and Jane MERIWETHER, (daughter of Elizabeth CRAWFORD and Nicholas MERIWETHER, II.) At this time my good computer is at the 'doctor' and there, also, are all of my files; however, it seems that I remember a connection with this family, I believe, through the CRAWFORD lineage to Daniel BOONE's mother, Sarah. Wasn't she a CRAWFORD or somehow descended from CRAWFORD. I'm still looking for more information regarding this connection as well as it is supposedly somehow connected in other ways as well to some of the aforementioned lineage. My Howell LEWIS, born: bet. 1782-1788 in Granville Co., North Carolina, married Nancy COPELAND, (daughter of Rachael TUCKER, born: abt. 1765 in North Carolina, (still looking for her parents but she is believed, most likely, to be descended from the lineage of Elizabeth COLEMAN, (dau of Robert COLEMAN,) who married Robert (1) TUCKER, of mid-1600's VA, I believe it was in Isle of Wight but can't check files as they are in the other computer, through their son, (Captain) Robert (2) TUCKER. I descend from Elizabeth COLEMAN and Robert (1) TUCKER through another son in maternal lineage and that was son, Joseph TUCKER, and his wife, Martha "Patsey" COLSON, (daughter of Winnifred ? and Isaac COLSON,) through their son, Joseph Tudor TUCKER, who married Lucretia WYNNE, (daughter of (Colonel) Robert (1) WYNNE, (son of Agnes STITH, (dau of (Major) John STITH and Mrs. Jane MOSBY (GREGORY) (PARSONS,) and Agnes's husband, Thomas WYNNE,) and (Col.) Robert (1) WYNNE's wife, Martha JEFFERSON, (daughter of Mary Martha? BRANCH, (dau of Christopher BRANCH, II, and his wife whom is thought to be Sarah ALMOND, (daughter of Samuel ALMOND/ALLMOND,) and Thomas (1) JEFFERSON.) And Nancy COPELAND's father and the husband of Rachael TUCKER, my paternal 4th great grandfather, was Ripley COPELAND, (RS,) born: abt. 1761 in North Carolina, later lived in Sumter Co., South Carolina. Nancy COPELAND and Howell LEWIS were the parents of my paternal 2nd great grandfather, John LEWIS, born: abt. 1820 in Jones Co., MS, and he married my paternal 2nd great grandmother, Harriett ELLZEY, born: 1824, (daughter of Mary COLLINS? and Evan ELLZEY, from SC to Jones Co., MS,) and they were the parents of my paternal great grandmother, Rachael Moranda "Randy" LEWIS, born: abt. 1851 in Jones Co., MS, who married both known husbands, Wesley BRIGHT, and my paternal great grandfather, Spencer B. PARKER, under the name of Moranda COLEMAN, so I believe that she was previously married to a man named COLEMAN but no idea who, what, where or when. The name of COLEMAN is connected several times with the names of ELLZEY, TUCKER, LEWIS, etc. as well as showing up in lines several times but I have no idea about this man. Spencer B. PARKER, born: 1859/1855 according to 1870 Rankin Co., MS census, was the natural son of Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS, born: 1821/22 in Covington Co., MS, but 1850 Smith Co. MS or 1870 Rankin Co., MS census says she was born in Mobile, Alabama...her grandfather, Samuel EARLE, IV, (RS,) born: 20 Jan 1760 at Town Run Plantation, Fauquier Co., VA, died in 1845 in Mobile, Alabama. Samuel EARLE, IV was married to Sarah's grandmother, Tabitha WILLIAMS, born: 1766 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., VA, (daughter of Catherine "Caty" ? and George WILLIAMS, (2nd son of his name of parents: Anne WILLIAMS, (descends from BILLINGTON - WILLIAMS family of 1600's VA,) and Roger WILLIAMS, (descends from Alice PEMBERTON and James WILLIAMS through their son Sydrach WILLIAMS, (brother of (Rev.) Roger WILLIAMS, founder and governor of Rhode Island.) The aforementioned Samuel EARLE, (RS,) (Sgt.,) born: 20 Jan 1760 at Town Run Plantation, Fauquier Co., VA, was the son of (Major) Samuel EARLE, III, born: abt. 1692 in Westmoreland Co., VA, (son of Phillis BENNETT and Samuel EARLE, Ii, (son of Samuel EARLE, I and 1st wife, Bridget HALE(S,) (Samuel, I was the son of (Sir) John EARLE and 1st wife, Mary SYMONS, both immigrants in 1649 and 1652, respectively, from England to Northumberland Co., VA, Yeocomico Plantation area.) Samuel EARLE, I, (my paternal 7th great grandfather,) was the landgrant partner of the aforementioned (Major) John STITH, (my maternal 11th great grandfather,) and Samuel EARLE, I owned land that was adjoining that of Augustine WASHINGTON, father of (General) George WASHINGTON who later held the seat formerly held by (Major) Samuel EARLE, III who was elected as the 1st Member of the House of Burgesses from Frederick Co., VA. Augustine WASHINGTON and (Gen./Pres.) George WASHINGTON descend from Augustine WARNER, I and Augustine WARNER, II, (both Members of the House of Burgess and Augustine, II was Speaker of the House,) who were also the father and grandfather of the aforementioned Elizabeth WARNER who married John "Councillor" LEWIS, ancestors of Meriwether LEWIS and Elizabeth's sister is the ancestral grandmother of George WASHINGTON. Their sister, Mary, was the ancestral grandmother for the current Queen Mother and daughter, Elizabeth, II. I am also trying to place the CLARKE family of my maternal 6th great grandfather, Robert CLARKE, born: 1688 in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina, who married wife, Jean or Joan ?, parents of Hannah CLARKE who married Jacob UNDERWOOD, (son of Thomas (2) UNDERWOOD, son of Thomas (1) UNDERWOOD. I descend through Hannah and Jacob through their daughter, Sarah "Sally" UNDERWOOD who married Lewis Lamkin HATTEN and were the parents of my maternal 3rd great grandfather, William HATTEN, born: 01 Jan 1800 in Tar River, Nash Co., North Carolina, who married my maternal 3rd great grandmother, Frances Lucretia "Patsy" LOTT, born: abt. 1802 in Alabama, (daughter of Martha Jane Dorsey? LIGHTFOOT, born: abt. 1763 in ?/VA?/Antigua?, (daughter of Philip LIGHTFOOT and wife: ?/Susannah ?,) and Absalom LOTT, (son/grandson of John (2) LOTT, (son of John (1) LOTT, born: bet. 1680-1700 in Isle of Wight Co., VA,) and wife, Elizabeth JOYNER, born: 1720 in Isle of Wight Co., VA, (daughter of Elizabeth BROWN(E) and John JOYNER, (son of Bridgeman/Bridgman JOYNER, Sr., (son of Thomas JOYNER,) and wife: Ann HARRIS, (daughter of Ann MARTIN and Thomas (2) HARRIS, (son of Alice WEST and Thomas (1) HARRIS.) Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS was the daughter of Kitty EARLE, born: abt. 1795 in VA, and husband, Bailey JENNINGS, born: abt. 1789 in VA, prob. Richmond Co., (Bailey JENNINGS' 2nd wife was Mrs. Sally LEA LEE, (widow of William LEE, son of Needham LEE, Sr. of Simpson Co., MS.) Back to Spencer B. PARKER, natural son of Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS and her husband, she was the 3rd wife of, Jeremiah "Jerry" PARKER, born: 1795 in Maryland, shown on 1830 and 1840 Copiah Co., MS census with his 1st set of children probably by wife # 1, (it is possible that this wife might be a woman named Sarah BAZAR, (could be spelled BAZER, BAZOR, BAZAAR, two Z's, etc.) who married a Jeremiah PARKER in 1822 in Mississipp but no proof,) and then Jeremiah PARKER is listed in the 1850 Smith Co., MS with a 2nd set of children that could be the children of a 2nd and different wife or they could be a 2nd younger set of children by the 1st wife, but shown on the census of 1850 Smith Co., MS was the 3rd wife, who may be the 2nd wife, Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS. Then in the 1870 Rankin Co., MS census, Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS is shown as the head of the household with her natural children...the 3rd set of children for her husband, Jeremiah "Jerry" PARKER, which include my paternal great grandfather who was Spencer B. PARKER. Spencer's brother, Richard T. PARKER, married Spencer's stepdaughter who was Harriett Almeda "Mead" PARKER, daughter of Wesley BRIGHT and Mrs. Rachael Moranda "Randy" LEWIS COLEMAN BRIGHT PARKER. Spencer and Rachael Moranda PARKER were the parents of my paternal grandmother, Allie Artimissa PARKER, born: 11 Aug 1892 near Braxton, Simpson Co., MS, who married my paternal grandfather, James Martin "Jim" MYRICK, born: 1892 near Magee, Simpson Co., MS. Looking forward to hearing from anyone that might have any connections. Thanks. Sincerely, Bellinda Myrick - Barnett

    3. Flo, I suspect that you may be related to the Sampson Howell some of whose information is on the Howell Research pages. He was born in New Jersey, but two of his sons went to Ontario after 1800, and both had large families. I can't identify your Rosa and Ralph, but I sure will try to find our connection. It is especially interesting since there were other Howell relatives who lived in Lapeer County in that time period,. having gone there from New Jersey. If I find a connectiopn, I'll let you know in a hurry. jeannette ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 15, 2002 8:32 PM Subject: [HOWELL] A Marriage Certificate > Hi > My name is Flo and I was born in MI and now live in RI. 3. Mary--Is this the cemetery in front of a school and near the entrance to a bird sanctuary? I have a picture sent to me sometime ago. I wonder if you have any information on who if anyone maintains the cemetery. I wrote once to the County office in St. Charles but did not get a reply. Thanks for any data on this point. 3. Glenn, It is probably more than likely that your Thomas is part of my group, if he was married in Franklin Co. I do have a Thomas Howell that married a Sarah? that was born in 1808, if you can believe the 1850 census for Greenup Co Ky. Where was your Victoria born and were did she live? Since most of my work is done through either marriage bond or census work and then from collaboration with family members it has been slow going, especailly since their were about 5 separate Howell families living in Bedford Co Va and surrounding Cos at the turn of the 19th century. There were no less than 10 David Howells. I haven't kept up with all of them but if your Thomas is from my group he would descend from David Howell Rev War Soldier, that married Rebekah Dixon. Can you give me more info on the Victoria Howell family. They were known to marry cousins to a fault. Spicer's daughter by his first marriage married his second wife's brother. They kept the wealth in the family for sure. Anything else you can give me no matter how small on what you do know might pull something out of my database.
