    3. Yes, I have looked in Ashe and Wayne Counties, NC.. Do you or anyone else have any information on the David Howel age 47, with wife Mary age 45.. listed on the 1850 Ashe Co., NC census?? I would be interested in hearing from his descendents.. Thanks for the info Jackie Subject: Re: [HOWELL] Ref:Grayson, Loudoun, Botetourt Yes, in fact Andrew Calvin Howell and some of his relatives from Grayson County, Virginia settled in Ashe County, North Carolina! I believe a great many of our Brewer bunch did also. What have you found, if anything, on your Brewer/Morgan bunch??? Try Ashe County, N.C., which isn't that awfully far at all from Buncombe! In fact, I think this John Calvin Howell was probably already in Ashe County by 1844. Don't overlook some of the ones in Wayne County, N.C. too who descend from old Joshua Howell born in the 1760's in Dobbs County, N.C. 3. Howdy Cousin Andy! Your John Calvin Howell, is probably a nephew of our John Howell who married Nancy Brewer and moved to White County, TN. Is there any definite proof as to Andrew Howell's parentage? Since he had a son named "John Calvin", I lean towards the belief that he was our John's brother. Some have him listed as a son of William Howell. We strongly believe our John was a son of Capt. George Howell and Mary "Polly" Osborne, since George was the only Howell living in the immediate proximity of Elk Creek, where Lewis Brewer and Jacob Rhudy lived. John Howell married Nancy Brewer in Grayson County, March 12, 1811 Calvin Howell married Barbara Rhudy I think in 1807. He was a witness to the will of William Poole as was Richard Cole. Richard's son, Isaiah Cole, married Honor Howell in 1804. In August 1812, Calvin Howell, John Howell, and Richard Cole bought land in White County, TN. We find no further mention of Calvin after this, and I've not found anything else about Richard Cole. Capt. George Howell and a "widow" Sarah Howell had land on Turkey Fork of Elk Creek, while William Howell and James Howell lived down on the New River near Mouth of Wilson Creek. My John and Nancy Brewer Howell had sons a son named Andrew D. Howell born in 1835, and his twin brother was Tillman C. Howell. They also had a daughter (my 3rd great-granny) named Sarah Jane Howell, who was probably named after this widow Sarah Howell in Elk Creek. I hope someone can find some more info on her, as she's probably George Howell's mother! Keep in touch! 3. Again, I'm quoting from the book I mentioned yesterday, written by Richard Wallace, Robert Cameron and Carmen Finley: page 34 - "It's interesting to speculate that Timothy Howell was the father of one of the Abners we found in Loudon County. However, Timothy's 1794 will does not list Abner as an heir. The will refers to Samuel, Mahlon and Thomas. Incidentally this will has a Quaker style date (5th day of 2nd month 1794). Timothy and his wife Rebecca, have been found in Virginia Quaker records, but Abner was not found there." The citation for the will indicates it can be found in Loudon County VA Will Book E:22. The authors of this book looked at all the Howells in Loudon County in 1771, including Hugh Howell and his family. They then tried to match up the information into families. They found eight families or households bearing the Howell name, and the methods they used to attempt to sort them out are excellent examples of careful genealogical work. If you can find the book in your area, it may be worth studying. 3. Good morning, (Glad to see cousin Willie Smith back with us). I have a few tidbits to offer on the discussion of ancestors of the SouthWest Virginia Howells. I discovered in the library yesterday a book "Loudoun County Virginia Tithables, 1758-1786" which gives ,using { } to group in households 1762 {Hugh Howel, William Howel}, and {John Howel} 1765 {Hugh Howell}, and {William Howell} 1767 {Hugh Howell}, {Hezichiah Howell}, {John Howell, Charles Howell} 1768 {Hugh Howell, Abner Howell}, {Daniel Howell}, {Timothy Howell}, {John Howell, Jr.} 1769 {Hugh Howell, Andrew Howell, John Howell} When this is compared with the list given by Jeannette (on Tuesday), we can get a bit more information. For example, the Daniel Howell listed above could not be Hugh's son, since he would have been only 11 years old in 1768, and not old enough to be counted. Also, from the book Related Families of Botetourt County, VA by J. William Austin II and Rebecca H.R. Austin, in an addendum, there is a family history for Abner Howell. He was granted 329 acres on Wolf Creek, Botetourt Co., in 1794 also Charles Howell was granted 40 acres on Wolf Creek in 1795, adjoining Thomas Akers, David JAMES, and his own land. The authors speculate "Charles and Abner were probably brothers, for both served in Captain Rawlings Company of the Revolutionary Army, in 1787, as had Daniel and John Howell. Benjamin, Joshua and Daniel Howell had served in Captain Easom's Company." I am a descendent of John Calvin Howell of Grayson (1818-1905), son of Andrew Howell, listed in Joe Bowers email from last week. I'll post a separate message about some questions I have in relation to my (known) ancestors, and possible connections to the Hugh Howell family. andy graham

Perhaps he named his sons after BROTHERS??? Does anyone know who Hugh's parents were? I seem to recall he may also have been from the New Jersey area? 2. Hi Cousins and Will, If anyone can prove Hugh Howell was related to Benjamin Howell (1735-1799) then they will also be related to Joshua Howell (1745-1836). Benjamin oldest son Daniel was born in Philadelphia - 1856-1836. Joshua migrated from SW VA into Champaign Co, OH in 1808 and died in Delaware Co, IN in 1836. The name Tilman (Tighman) also is known in the Joshua line - a great grandson born in Delaware County, moved back to SC to his mother's area after the Civil War. His mother's name was Abigail Sumpter (Sumter) who was born in 1790. It was make quite a few people happy if we can establish the relationship of Benjamin and Joshua to someone - so far we can't connect them with anyone else. It appears that this Howell family stayed in Loudon County until their move to Muskingum County, OH, probably after the revolutionary War, in about 1783, since that seems to be the last mention of them in the VA tax lists. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marsha Howell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2002 2:19 PM Subject: Re: [HOWELL] Fw: Roll Call-Grayson Co., VA>TN>MO>West > Do Any of these Howell in "The Howells of New Jersey, Virginia, Ohio and > Points West" ever settle for a time in Lewis, Randolph, Harrison or Kanawha, > Counties Virginia in the late 1700's? > > Marsha > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Jeannette Phethean" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2002 9:44 AM > Subject: Re: [HOWELL] Fw: Roll Call-Grayson Co., VA>TN>MO>West > > > > I'm quoting from the book "The Howells of New Jersey, Virginia, Ohio and > > Points West" by Richard E. 3. I'm quoting from the book "The Howells of New Jersey, Virginia, Ohio and Points West" by Richard E. Wallace, Robert W. Cameron and Carmen J. Finley, published in1994 by Heritage Books, Bowie, MD. "The children of Hugh and Margaret (Hixon) Howell have been identified from his 1777 will. Their names will be restated, along with their actual or approximate dates of birth an d their birth places. i. William Howell, born about 1745, in New Jersey. ii. Andrew Howell, born about 1753, in New Jersey. iii. John Howell, born about 1753, in New Jersey. iv. Abner Howell, born before 1755, in New Jersey. v. Benjamin Howell, born about 1755, in New Jersey. vi. Daniel Howell, born about 1757, in New Jersey. vii. Reuben Howell, born 26 Frbruary 1762, near Trenton, New Jersey. viii. Rachel Howell, born before March 1777, in New Jersey or Virginia. ix. Ann Howell, born before March 1777, in New Jersey of Virginia. " This book follows the family to about 1850, with much documentation and proofs of the statements made in it. If oyu can find a copy, it will be very useful. I believe it is out of print now. The three authors are really careful to prove eveything they write.
