    3. Hey Will, There's lots of people out there who would rather believe what they think is true.. than accept documentation that proves what IS the truth!! 3. More on John Howell b. 1753 Wayne Co., NC and died 1843 Wayne Co., NC age 90. Regarding the census information for John William Howell. What I should have said is that I cannot identify any of the John Howell's on the Wayne Co., NC census to be John William Howell, son of David Howell. This John Howell on the 1860 census could be him, but I am not sure. He named a son James R. Perhaps John William Howell named him after his brother James Robert Howell. Alice Cheek lived next door 1 f 50-60, 1 m. 20-30, [Alice Cheek is the daughter of John Howell. She is the widow of Henry Cheek.] What I would really, really like to find out is proof of the name of John Howell's wife. I believe she is Isabell Jernigan. I have lots of clues for that, but no real proof. She was deceased by the time he applied for pension for his Rev. War service. She was not living with him on 1840 census, and she was not mentioned in his will or probate when he died in 1843. Wynell

    3. I had always wondered what happened to James Howell as I could never find info on him. Most of the Putnam County records burned in 1899, so that would explain why you were unable to find much. The yanks burned it the first time in 1865, then it burned again in 1899. There are a lot of Stones in that area. One of the Rices married a Stone but they moved out to McCracken County, Kentucky by 1900. I think it was Joseph Douglas Rice who married a Stone, but not exactly sure. Anyway, I'd love to have more info on James Howell's family, as I had no info on his line. Please keep in touch! I really am beginning to think my Timothy was laid by a buzzard and hatched by the sun. 1. [HOWELL] NC Howells
    2. Since several have commented on the Howell's for NC today, I though I'd add the one I am researching again. She is Margaret "Peggie" HOWELL. She was the wife of Craton/Crayton LEDFORD, according to information on a death certificate of their daughter's. He is in the 1850 Census of Cleveland Co. listed with the children, but she died in 1849. Based on the age of her husband, she probably was born in the area of 1815. They very well could have migrated through Rutherford Co. before getting to Cleveland Co., as this is where Crayton's parents are listed in the NC Marriage Bonds 1742-1868 / Rutherford County, NC -- Lewis Ledford and Dorcas Ellis - bond date July 19, 1812. I do not have ANY connections to ancestors. Sure hope some of these listed today could be a relative of our Peggie. HELP me break down my brick wall. Thanks Rachel

Hi Will, When I first started looking into my husband's Howell roots I had seen a lot of your mail but since I got the nerve to ask questions you seem to have dropped out of sight. My husband is the grandson of Robert Daniel Roark, son of Peter Ruark(Roark) and Tabitha Howell.Robert was born in Cooksville,Tenn.in 1877.His father deserted the family and his mother died when he was 9.He was sent to Tx.and was raised by Tabitha's brother.Tabitha was the daughter of James Howell and Elizabeth Stone and James was the son of John Howell and Nancy Brewer.I have found all of Tabitha's siblings in White Co.census.However I haven't been able to place her mother Elizabeth Stone with a family.Would you happen to know anything about her.Although a lot of the siblings were married in White Co.I have found know record for Peter Ruark and Tabitha Howell or James Howell and Elizabeth Stone.Tabitha was in her parents house at the age of 14 in the 1870 census. Then in 1880 in Putnam Co.Tn.with Peter Ruark, age 55,blacksmith b.Ky..Tabitha age 23 b.Tn.Robert age 3,b.Tn.and Joanna age 11/12 b.Tn..I am not sure if this Peter was Ruark or Roark. In this census it is Ruark.I found Robert in Tx.1900 I think age 22 and his name is Roark.I have found Peter with both name in Ky.put can't find anything to say any of them is this one.A grandson always said that he returned to Ky. and met with less than honorable death. If you have any info on Elizabeth Stone I could sure use some help.I have the descendants of Tabitha if you are interested.I have also identified her brother William(Bill) Howell who lived an died in Allen Co.Ky..I have a copy from the book at the funeral home naming his parents as James Howell and Elizabeth Stone. It listed know children for Bill.Robert came to Allen Co.as a young man to live with the Howells that were there. That is where he met and married my husband's grandmother Matilda Elizabeth(May)Johnson. Thanks for letting me bend your ear, Jeany in Indiana

    3. Thanks to all you Howell "cousins"..for some very good information.. My William Howell was born in Buncombe Co., NC 1844.. His father is supposed to be John William Howell ( I take this with a grain of salt).. Young William is found joining the Union Army in Greene Co, TN in Feb. 1865.. the lateness may be due to his being a captured Confederate soldier.. better than a POW camp!!!.. He then marries a Morgan girl from Jefferson Co., TN in 1866.. and lives the rest of his life in TN.. He named one of his sons.. Andrew Mack Howell, this is my g grandfather.. Andy Mack used to go trapping somewhere in the mountains not far from Marion, NC.(but they lived in TN). and he used a cabin in the mountains that apparently belonged to someone who was kin.. They apparently stayed a good part of the winter.. and they sold the furs.. some of them being "Mink" ,to a man who came down from New York to buy furs from folks in that part of the mountains.. My mother used to go with her grandparents and stayed with them while they trapped and made cane bottom chai! rs.. Andrew Mack Howell's father is the William Howell b 1844 in Buncombe Co., NC. that I seek..Thanks... 3. Hi cousins, I want to jump in on this discussion, but I'm at work, and can't take the time. Tonight, with my notes, I can reply. A few comments David Howell, Ashe Co NC traded land with my gggrandfather John Calvin Howell on Mill Creek, Ashe Co., a few miles from my house. I have copies of the deeds. John Calvin Howell was still in Grayson Co. VA in 1844, where he bought a tract of land from Andrew Howell (probably not his father, but maybe) on near New River at Fox Creek. He married in Old Town, VA in 1840, which is right on the edge of Grayson and Carroll Co. Va. There was most certainly two Andrew Howells in Grayson Co VA, between 1825 and 1844, one could write his name, the other couldn't. The one that could write was an heir of William Howell Sr. of Fox Creek. By the way, a George Howell owned land adjoining this William Howell Sr. around 1820 or so. This is stated on the deed from William Howell Sr. heirs to Andrew Howell. A William Howell, showed up in Ashe Co NC early, maybe 1820's, on Mill Creek, Ashe Co. NC. Possibly William Howell Jr.? There is a Sarah Howell 68 years old, in 1850 Ashe Co NC census, born in Maryland, living with George Laurance and family. George Laurance had adjoining farm to John Calvin Howell. AND, John Calvin Howell and some of his family (son Marshall) moved to Missouri around 1880, and then two years later moved on to Prairie City (Grant Co) Oregon where he died in 1905. This is curious since many messages about the Missouri Howells are being posted right now. gotta run, andy

    3. Jackie, Our John Howell had a son named David Howell. David died in Wayne Co., NC leaving a will written Sep 8 1847 proven Nov. Court 1849 Sons: John William and James R. [Robert]; daughters: Jane Holland, Dolly Howell, and Sally Edwards; executor: Peter L. Peacock; witnesses: B. W. Raiford and N. T. Perkins. This David Howell was born about 1780 (guess). You might want to consider this John William Howell. I was not able to find him on the 1850 or 1860 census in Wayne County. Do you have your John William Howell on a census? What did he name his children? We believe our John Howell is the son of Joshua Howell who died 1799 in Wayne Co., NC,but we have no proof. Joshua had a son named John and a grandson named Lewis, but there were several Johns and Lewises in the County at that time. My ancestor is John Howell's son Lewis Howell b. 1778. 2. Hi EVeryone - The David Howell (Montgomery Co, VA) was a son of Benjamin who died in 1799. This Benjamin was the brother of Joshua 1745-1836 from the same are and NOT from NC. Micki << Not sure quite yet, but there was a David Howell up in old Montgomery County, VA who seems to be connected with Benjamin who died 1799, if memory serves me correctly. I'll keep my eyes out for info on him. Will >>
