    3. Will, I have a lot of children and grandchildren for John and Nancy. If these are of interest to you I will be glad to share.I have posted them on the Howell website and also many White Co.census.I don't think I posted the one from Tx.where my husband's grandfather(grandson of James) went to live with his uncle.I will look that up and let you know which one went to Tx..I do have obit for James son William who went to Allen Co.Ky..There is also another Howell family in Allen Co.that my husband's maternal uncle married into.I haven't been able to place them with the family of John and Nancy but I thought it was a real coincidence that they ended up in the same place.Let me know if I might have something you are interested in. 2. Wynell Simpson
    3. Will, Please do try to find the obit you speak of. Nothing in our records show our John Howell to be a preacher. It would be nice to prove it one way or another. Do you have proof that John Howell b. 1753 is a son of Joshua Howell. We have searched for that for years. We know that Joshua had a son named John and a grandson named Lewis. The problem is proving exactly which John that is. We could sure use some proof. There are quite a few of us working on this John Howell family. As far as your statement that Joshua may have been the son of Etheldred Howell. The ages just do NOT fit. I have seen that information on the Internet. I believe it is false. They could be related. I don't know, but not a son. The people on the Internet have Joshua born in 1680. (They need to have him born then so that he will "fit" as Ethledred's son. It is not possible. We know that Joshua died 1799. I am sure he was not 119 years old. Joshua was still active in deed records at this time. Yes, the county was Dobbs in 1753 when John was born, but in his pen. app. he states he was born in Wayne Co., NC and lived there all of his life. Even though the county was not named until after he was born, he considered it his county. Please do try to find the obit. If anyone else has it, please post it. It would be a great thing to finally settle this. I hope it turns out that our John Howell was a preacher. Wynell ----- Original Message ----- From: Willie D Smith Sent: Friday, March 01, 2002 10:55 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [HOWELL] Howell of Wayne C9., NC Yep, he certainly was! There was an obit someone sent me out of the old Raleigh, N.C. newspaper from 1843 which stated that he was not only a Revolutionary War soldier, but was apparently a minister or bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church there in Wayne county, N.C. He lived there his entire life (Wayne was taken from Dobbs County, and this John Howell was the son of old Joshua Howell. I think Joshua may have been the son of an Etheldred Howell..If anyone has info on Etheldred, please look this up, cause these folks are kin). So, old John was born 1753 in Dobbs County, N.C. and died there in 1843. I've seen his Revolutionary War records as well. I did a lookup for the John Howell listed in (either Lt. or Capt.) Nathaniel Williams Company of Light Infantry, 2nd N.C. Battalion, Continental Line, which is the inscription on the spurious gravemarker here in Tennessee for our equally spurious John "Hamilton" Howell (this is actually the grave of John H. Howell born 1818-died 1859, SON of John Howell (1788-1861) and Nancy Brewer Howell (1792-1886). The records led me back to your John Howell of Wayne County, N.C. This Nathaniel Williams could have been subordinate to one of the other men you mentioned. I said Captain, but I think he was actually a Lieutenant. I'll see if I have a copy of that obit anywhere. It was sent to me a couple of years ago by someone on the Howell rootsweb list. Hopefully, someone is still on this list who also has a copy! Hope this helps! 3. Could this have been the old James Howell who lived on New River, very near the North Carolina line, and down stream from William Howell? It could also have been James Jr. I don't know when James Howell Sr. died, but he didn't live too awfully far from Old Town. 3. Good! Now we have this particular lineage established. I do know that William Howell had a son named George. This leads me to believe that Capt. George Howell was old William Howell's brother. Both men were connected to the HASH family. William's wife was a Hash. George was married to Mary "Polly" Osborne, daughter of Enoch Osborne and a (Jane? Someone working on this bunch please clarify Enoch's wife's name for me) Hash. Also, I think old James Howell's wife was a Hash also? Anyone familiar with old James???? All three names are used amongst the descendants of John and Nancy Brewer Howell. Silas Howell's oldest son was William Decatur Howell. Tilman Howell's son was George W. Howell, and Tillman's twin brother was Andrew D. Howell. Also, John and Nancy had a son named James Howell who married Elizabeth Stone. I believe all three men are brothers. Hope someone else can help clarify some of these mens' families! 3. Yep, he certainly was! There was an obit someone sent me out of the old Raleigh, N.C. newspaper from 1843 which stated that he was not only a Revolutionary War soldier, but was apparently a minister or bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church there in Wayne county, N.C. 3. Also Cousins, This is also true for Tennessee, since TN did not become a State until 1796 and was North Carolina up until that point.. The counties bordering Ashe Co., NC.. in TN.. include Johnson, Carter, Sullivan, Washington. Which would also include the "parent" and children" of those counties, respectively.. But maybe some of hers would be mine if I could find something on mine :). I need information about Lydia Joanna Howell who was born in 1842 in (I think) Georgia. She married Irvin Monroe English in 1857 and they had 12 children (many of whom I have info and one is my ggrandmother). I was told Lydia's parents were James and Mary Anne (Fullwood) Howell. I have not been able to prove that. I do know she and Irvin lived in Georgia. Any help or thoughts will be most appreciated! Have a great day! 3. Will, There were two John Howell's who died around that time in Wayne Co., NC. I have not seen evidence that our John Howell b. 1753 was a preacher. He was definitely in the Rev. War. We have papers that prove that. His War papers state that he was born May 29, 1753. We also know that he died 1843. I don't know who the John Howell "preacher" was. Our John Howell b. 1753 was not in Capt. Nathaniel Williams Battalion that I can see. It is not mentioned in his war papers. He was in Capt. Joseph Green's, Capt Thomas Grantham, and Capt. Boon. He lived on Falling Creek or something like like, and served in Capt. Nathaniel Williams 2nd N.C. Battalion during the Revolutionary War. He's the fellow my bunch claimed was John "Hamilton" Howell, who they claim is buried under a phoney DAR monument at Elrod Cemetery in White County, TN. I've proved beyond doubt that the man never left Wayne County, N.C., and is NOT our ancestor. Needless to say, some of the Howells up there in White County ain't too happy with me, preferring obviously to believe lying tradition over the truth as revealed in the actual documentation. My John HOWELL was born 1767 in VA (don't know where or to whom), married Elizabeth Bonham 1797 and lived in Faquier Co VA, migrated to Belmont Co OH in 1814. He may have had a brother, William, who married Elizabeth's sister, Rachel, and migrated with them to Belmont Co OH. Anything sound familiar. I just feel one of these families being discussed is my John's, but which one ???????? Patt Researching: Howell, Bonham, Arford, Pickard, Eskins,

Some have > him listed as a son of William Howell. Frankly, I am of the opinion that Andrew was William's son. Several deeds indicate that he was an heir. Specifically, 8 May 1825, a deed from the sole heirs of William Howel, decd, formerly of Grayson Co Va. to Andrew Howell, the land which he was already living on, on Fox Creek, near the New River and Mouth of Wilson. The callings refer to the Andrew's fence, a corner of Andrew and George Howell, and also to the old line of William Howel. The Howel and Howell spellings are randomly mixed. I could be wrong. more later, take care, andy
