    1. Re: [HOWELL] Sarah Jane??
    2. Willie D Smith
    3. My great-grandfather's records gave her middle name as "Jane", and identified her as the daughter of John and Nancy Brewer Howell. Marion Rice enlisted at old Zion in White county with his uncles Tillman C. Howell and Silas Howell in B Company, 1st TN Battalion (Colms') on December 8, 1861. Marion deserted, but the other two went on to get captured up at Fort Donelson on 16 Feb 1862. Tillman became a "galvanized" Yankee, and enlisted in B Company, 1st TN Mounted Infantry, and was mustered out at Nashville, April 14, 1865. He subsequently died in a measles epidemic within the year, and Silas raised his son, George W. Howell, who had a son named Tillman C. Howell. Sarah was born in 1815 according to her original grave monument which was destroyed by the so-called "caretaker" at the Rice Cemetery in 1993. Thank God that someone did a compilation of the burials there, right down to the location of all the unmarked graves, about three years earlier, or we would have lost that data altogether. I still haven't located Silas Howell's or Matilda's graves, but feel certain they're probably buried at Rice Cemetery, since that is where William Decatur Howell, who committed suicide about 1901, is buried with his wife, and many of his descendants. I'd like to find Silas's grave and have it properly marked with a Confederate monument. 2. Ann Thomas
    3. This came from " Bedford Villages Lost and Found Vol. # 3 complied by the Peaks of Otter Chapter, D A R. Bedford, Va. I have never found where or when Abner married Hannah and until I found this I didn't know her maiden name was James, still have no other proof other than this. Have found Abner and others in Sullivan Co. Tenn. 1860 census. Anything you can add to this would really be appreciated. We have a wonderful site and a whole bunch of great cousins, thanks for sharing. Ann After the Revolutionary War, Daniel James, Thomas Bandy and Abner Howell were some of the first settlers in areas of Bedford and Botetourt (now Roanoke) Counties which later became known as Neighbor's Shop. Abner served as a surveyor of roads in the area during the late 1700's. He and his wife Hannah James Howell owned a large portion of land in western Bedford County. In 1802, Thomas Bandy and Daniel James conveyed land to Mathew Pate, Charles Horn, Abner Howell, Stephen Terrel, Samuel James and James Howell, Trustees of the Blueridge Meeting House. The plot in Botetourt County was to be used for the preaching of the gospel by ministers of all religious societies. Blue Ridge Baptist Church is still in operation today and is located adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway in Roanoke County. (Abner and other family members are buried here) Jesse Howell owned large tracts of land on Sandy Run, Falling Creek and Chestnut Mountain. His land stretched from the Neighbor;s Shop area in Beardsville and into Botetourt County. One tract was described as "located on Howell's Road and Fall Creek, to the first ford, and a straight line crossing the ridge, near the draw bars, above the dwelling house, and on Wagon Road to the ford known as the Howell's Mill tract." The Howell family contributed in early settlement effort. In 1859 Abraham Howell sold one acre of land to Jeremiah Wood, John Horn and Jubal D. Meadows, trustees of a school house for$15.00. Howell School opened in the early 1860's in a one-room building. In 1800's, Washington Howell served as a notary public, a justice of the peace and commissioner of elections at nearby Cross Roads. Abner Howell (junior) served a justice of the peace in the 2nd and Chamblissburg districts of Bedford County in the mid to late 1860. Howell family reunions were popular at the Abner Howell homeplace.

    3. I have a messy, confused photocopy of a handwritten transcription that the widow of my 2g-granduncle made of her husband's notes. He met a Dudley Fletcher Howell on December 6, 1913, in the Lenox Hotel in Spokane, Washington. Dudley Fletcher Howell was from Warren Co., Kentucky. According to these notes: "The Howells came to this country from England about 1706, one landed at Long Island the other two in Virginia." My earliest proven Howell ancestor is James Howell, 1791-1872, married Agnes Cason on October 11, 1814, in Warren Co., Kentucky. I found one website that ties him into Edward Howell's line in Southampton. I think that line is bogus. I'm wondering if he may be a distant uncle, though. I found another site that lists him as the son of Samuel Howell and P. Butler, grandson of Timothy Howell and Rebecca Janney. His marriage record lists him as James Howell, Jr., though. He moved to Howard Co., Missouri, then to Andrew Co., Missouri, and then back to Howard Co., Missouri. There was a James Howell, Sr., living in Howard Co., Missouri for awhile. Does anyone have any thoughts about any part of this message? Diane Midkiff Washington State

    1. Re: [HOWELL] John Howell&Nancy Brewer
    2. Willie D Smith
    3. I'd love to have whatever info you'd like to send me :-). My line comes from Sarah Jane Howell, born 1815, who died November 1877, and buried Rice Cemetery. She married about 1831 or 1832 to John A. Rice, son of William B. and Eleanor Rice, in White County. This is a couple I'd sincerely love to find a County marriage record on. Apparently White County did lose some records, as I've found several families married there for whom marriage records are not extant. All I had was the old family Bible record of my great-grandfather, William A. Rice, grandson of John and Sarah. All he gave was "John A. Rice married Sary Jane Howell...He died young. Sary then married John Jaco.." The Howell family history says basically the same thing about Sarah, that she married a Rice and after his death, married a Jaco. In 1850, I find Marion Rice, William A. Rice's father, living in the household of John and Saraoh Jaco. The 1900 census of Putnam County, TN states that Marion Rice was born in January 1833. He had a brother, John "Granton" Rice, born in 1834. Both Marion and John are buried at Sandy Hickey Cemetery, Putnam County, 8th District. Marion married first Susannah Lee in 1853, and they had: Nellie Rice (Nellie is a nickname for "Eleanor" so she was undoubtedly named after Marion's grandmother) born 1854. I've found no info on her. John H. Rice - born 1855 died 1927 in Red Boiling Springs, Macon County, TN. All the Rices up there are descended from this man through his son, Rufus Edward Rice, born 1880. His first wife was Nancy Canady, by whom he had his children. His second wife was Sophia Lee Slate, a first cousin of James B. Grisham, great-great grandfather of William Jefferson "Slick Willie" (Blythe) Clinton. (I about FREAKED when I found out that Hillary Rodham "Wicked Witch of the North" Clinton is descended from a Howell family. THANK GOD she's not related to any of US! Her line came from England late. Bad enough to be kin to Slick Willie through the Grishams! :-D Anyway.......... Sarah C. Rice - born 1856. Married Jesse Thomas. She died 1937 up in Rhea County, TN. Belzara Rice - born 1858. Haven't found a thing on her, but the family talked about "Aunt Belle". I assume she lived to adulthood and married, but for the life of me I've not found a THING on her after 1860. Lucinda E. Rice - born May 15, 1861. Married John Denton Brown 1880 Putnam County, TN. She died 1934 in McMinnville, Warren County, TN and has a lot of descendants over there. Marion's second wife was Mary Ann Myers, whom he married in 1870, and I haven't found them on any census for that year, so obviously on their honeymoon and not recorded. Don't know where their kids were either. Can't find them. I seriously doubt they would have tagged along! Anyway....They had one living son: William A. Rice born April 1, 1871. Died March 5, 1909, from accidental gunshot while hunting in Putnam County. He married Leitha Catherine Judd about 1894. They were my grandfather William Logan Rice's parents. Sarah Howell had several children by John Jaco. They were: Isaac Jaco, Avery Jaco (female) Eli Alexander Jaco - born 1839. died after 1910 probably in White county. An "E.Jaco" is buried next to Sarah Jaco at Rice cemetery. This is possibly his grave. William Jaco and a Harriett Byrd was in their household in 1860. In 1840, a female 0-5 was enumerated in John Jaco's household, but I don't know if she was a Rice or a Howell. I've not found anything further about this Harriett Byrd. That's about the scope of the info I have right now on my Howell descent. Someone just told he there was a reference in White county wills to an Etheldred...That I need to investigate. Perhaps our Howells are descended from that person??? I have no info whatsoever on Etheldred Howell! ----- Original Message ----- From: "john t roark" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, March 01, 2002 12:33 PM Subject: [HOWELL] John Howell&Nancy Brewer > Will, > I have a lot of children and grandchildren for John and Nancy. If these are > of interest to you I will be glad to share.I have posted them on the Howell > website and also many White Co.census.I don't think I posted the one from > Tx.where my husband's grandfather(grandson of James) went to live with his > uncle.I will look that up and let you know which one went to Tx..I do have > obit for James son William who went to Allen Co.Ky..There is also another > Howell family in Allen Co.that my husband's maternal uncle married into.I > haven't been able to place them with the family of John and Nancy but I > thought it was a real coincidence that they ended up in the same place.Let > me know if I might have something you are interested in. > Jeany in Indiana > > > ==== HOWELL Mailing List ==== > To unsubscribe from the HOWELL discussion list, send a message to [email protected] (mail mode) or [email protected] (digest) with the word unsubscribe in the subject line. >

So, we stuffed the information in a binder, or in a box under the bed, or a file in or desk and the data became a hidden record. Just because these people aren't yours doesn't mean they don't belong to another cousin, though. YOUR CHALLENGE: Post a "These Aren't Mine" message telling us about the person, people, or family you found. Please be sure to tell us the dates and places of these people and if possible, list your source. One family per message, please. I wish you all a SUPER, SUNNY Saturday! :) Colleen

    3. I found this on a blind search and was curious about the mother of the deceased, Ida Mae Crowell Howell. Ida was the name of one of my GGF Crowell Howell's daughters. She was b. in Ark in the late 1800s. The fact that her name was Ida, and her middle name is the same as mine, the added Crowell Howell gives me strong reason to think she was the G-Aunt, sister to my Grandfather Roscoe Wallace Howell, b. 1892 in Franklin Co ARK to Crowell Howell and Adeline Brooks. Adeline Brooks Howell was not her mother, I believe that Dorsey Jarusha Payne was. Unusual that someone that age would list not only her mother's maiden name but that the mother would have four names a Ida Mae Crowell Howell apparently did. Does anyone know this line? 3. Here are some odds and ends about one or more John Howells (plural only) from North Carolina. John Howell, b abt 1732 said to be from PA, lived in Orange County NC when his youngest son Francis was born in 1762. His oldest son was also named John. This John lived in Rutherford County, TN where he died in 1808 (This data on the will is from "The Tennessee Researcher", Vol I, No 4, Dec. 1962). This will also lists a daughter Margaret married to James Whitsett, two sons and another daughter. It would seem that this John would have been born sometime in the later 1750's, probably in NC (my inference.) There are a number of land records of this John in Orange County (the now Alamance portion.) (This data is from Orange County Records, Vol. 10 edited by Ruby and William Bennett in 1992). I think these land records pertain to my Francis' older brother John. There is, of course, a John Howell in who entered RW service June 1777 in Capt. Hall's Company of the 2d Regiment of the NC line for three years and was granted bounty land in "Tennessee County" which was the term used in NC before TN became a state. I think this John is a different person. If anyone can clarify or add to this data please do so. 3. I'm sorry, I got that wrong. He was from Byberry and she was "of southern Township Pennsylvania, Montgomery County" however there were Howell in Byberry. CATHERINE HOWELL m JAMES CRAWFORD 2 Fed 1762 in Christ Church Philidelphia. Catherine Howell was Welch. Some think her father was Thomas. Catherine and James moved to Rockbridge Co VA in 1786. There was in Rockbridge Co a THOMAS and ANN HOWELL who is thought to be Catherine's brother and also a mention of Able Thomas, a nephew of Catherine. "Decendants of the Thomas' are in KY and IA. I mention this because I seem to remember an Able in connection with the Howells. I wondered if this could be the Thomas that was in NC but I had some problems with the computer (or the computer had some problems with me) and I seem to have deleted the information on them. I do have this information from some marriage records of Byberry that I think came from the IGI. Ephriam Howell relative of Chas Eugene Walton b 1789 or 1755 Byberry Hanna Howell b 17 July 1686 dau of Thomas and Mary Howell m William Hibbs 2 Feb or Dec 1686 Byberry Richard Howell relative of Walton b ca 1685 Byberry Sarah Howell relative of Walton m Wm Walton 20 Apr 1689 Byberry Thomas Howell m 19 Feb 1719 Katherine Curtis. 1. [HOWELL] My Howell Dilemna: Exum Howell

    3. I am researching an EXUM HOWELL (there were some stories given to my husband's parents from the Aycocks in Goldsboro that had a William in front of Exum) b. about 1817 in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina. He died before 1880 (he wasn't living with his family at the time of the 1880 census--so we assume he died before then) He married 27 May 1852: MARTHA DAVIS b. 1834 in Perquimans, North Carolina. They had some children: (I keep finding more and more all the time--so I assume this isn't all of them) James Henry Howell, Penelope Howell, Olivia Howell, Jordan Exum Howell, Louisa Howell, John Bryant Howell. My mother-in-law and father-in-law did some research in the 1970's in North Carolina. They came up with the information that Exum's father was William. Sometime later while going through records in Salt Lake City in the Family History LDS Center, my mother-in-law found that William's wife was Ann. Now I don't know how correct this later information is. If anyone can help with me with any information I would appreciate it. I am trying to verify this information that has been passed down in the family genealogy for a while. I am not sure if anything past Exum is even correct. Thanks! Debbie Ya'll have fun now, ya' hear?
