In Wayne County, NC 30 July 1823; Henry Daughtry wrote a letter to his brother and sister in which he mentioned "old Aunt America Howell is like to die with dropsy she is sweld all fit to bust." I have not been able to find the purchaser, in 2002, of the letter on Ebay. I have been in contact with the seller G. Thomas Bishop. His records of the sale are unavailable to him. Should anyone have knowledge of who the purchaser was or have full content of the letter and willing to share, I would be greatly appreciative. ALSO does anyone know the family connection between Henry Daughtry and Maria America Howell. He referred to he as "Old Aunt America Howell". Maria was dau of Henry Howell. I am descended from Henry and Rachel (Boyett) Howell via John H., b. 1777. I noted that as of the date of the letter and the family memories of Maria's birth abt 1720 would make her more than 100 years of age. WELDON HOWELL elbbbb0295@earthlink.net Why Wait? Unfortunately, none of this sounds familiar to me. My Howells came down from South Carolina into Georgia, and ultimately to Pasco and Hernando Counties in Florida. I have pictures of the old homesites they married into and settled in Florida, and my aunts and cousins still raise oranges and orchids on the old land. But I don't have any info on collateral lines moving into Tennesee...sorry! But thanks, anyway. Judith
I thank Grant Johnston very much for the reference. However, after reading the entire online journal, I'm sorry to say I have to conclude that, while they are probably related as "cousins" in some way, the Joseph Howell who was the father of Jesse Rue appears to be a different Joseph than Joseph H. who married Louisa Carn, and I can't make the connection. Drat! I'll keep trying, and thanks so much! > The second child was JESSIE. Now, who was she named for? Since you have thrown this name out for general discussion , I'd like to add this as a thought. Jessie Benton Fremont was quite a national figure during the civil war and became a writer for the Atlantic Monthly in 1863. Could be that your literate anncestors named their daughter after a woman that they admired.
I have no idea that what I have to say will mean any- thing to you. My great grandmother was Mary Jane Howell who m. Samuel Irwin in Wilson, Co., Tn., in 1811. My grand-father was Wm. B. Irwin, b. 1820, m. 1863, Harriet Blanche Nelson, Limestone Co., Al. The first female child of my grandparents, was Willie B., named for her father, William B. The second child was JESSIE. Now, who was she named for? My mother was the only other daughter. She was given her mother's name, Harriet. Does any of this parallel your research? egniwri@aol.com

Hello to all my Howell cousins! I haven't joined in much before because I'm still afraid (even after lurking for a year or two) of posting something really stupid or of not having researched well enough, but...here goes! This is somewhat of a problem, in that I have conflicting resources regarding my ancester Jessie Howell, who was born in 1793 in Barnwell Co. South Carolina. My resources indicate he was married to Mary Lightsey about 1816 in Barnwell, and died in 1860 in Georgia. He also was married to Elinder Johnson and Mary Caroline Copeland; he had children by all three wives, but my line is through Mary Lightsey, by whom he had John G. Howell, who fathered John J. Howell, who fathered Julia J. Howell, my great grandmother, who was born in Pasco County, Florida in 1876. Now, here's the problem: some of my research indicates Jessie's father was Joseph Howell, Sr., while another source puts one Hopkins Howell as his father. I know quite a lot about Joseph Sr., but have been able to find very little about Hopkins Howell, and, until recently, never heard of him. Does he sound familiar to anyone? He was married to a lady named Susannah, is all I know. If anyone can shed some light here, or can confirm he's a myth and Joseph Sr. is the real deal, I'd love to talk to you! Thanks so much...Judith Michelsen

Been on vacation, hope I'm not too late. Theory but Unproved: James Howell / early 1700s /early Tyrell Co. NC > Jethro Howell /abt 1725 - d. 1790/ Martin Co > James Howell / mid 1700s / early Tyrell- Martin Co > Brick wall and Question: an early researcher of this line claimed to have seen a will for James, son of Jethro naming Whitney, James, Kisiah/Keziah and several "unnamed" daughters in will. I have never been able to find Whitney in reference to that will .... only real indication of Whitney's relationship to Jethro/James is his proximity to them in Martin Co. Jethro left James a portion of his plantation -- purchased from Williams -- which is where Whitney is also indicated to have lived according to the run of surnames and specifics in land/deed in legal papers. Families lived in Martin Co. near border of Edgecombe; Pitt, Beaufort, Halifax, and Bertie counties also all very close -- many overlaps of legal papers. Proven Line: ( * indicates my direct line) * Whitney Howell / b. abt 1775 / d. 1832. M. Sarah Watson (daughter of Jordan Watson and Elizabeth Culpepper, sister to Mary Ann W. Mayo and Elizabeth W. Sherrod). Children were: (1) Levi / b. early 1800 / Halifax or Martin Co./ m. 1832, Doratha Bryant. Children were: John W., Julius Henry Levi, Laura E.(was 2nd marriage to William W. Watts), Amanda D. Howell, Mary J.( married Edmond Hoover of Beaufort Co. in 1877), Celia Ann( married ? Yarrell), a daughter (who married a Williams of the Joseph J. Williams family on a near-by farm). (2) Elizabeth Dorothy Howell, b. 1817 in Halifax, NC -- d. 1849 in Hernando, MS. M. Rueban Staton Manning, Martin Co. NC, moved to Hernando/Desoto Co. MS in 1840. Had very large family. Most famous son, Vannoy Hartrog Manning, b. Edgecombe/Martin Co. 1839, organized 3rd Inf. Regiment of AR, Civil War; after war -- MS representative for several terms in Washington D.C.. * (3) Thomas/ b. early 1800/ Halifax or Martin Co. M.1833, Elizabeth D. Cherry of Pitt Co. (daughter of Roderick and Jennett Cherry). Family moved to Hardeman Co. TN in 1840 / Thomas died in Nov.1844, Elizabeth 2nd marriage to Thomas C. Harrell (neighbor in Martin Co.. NC/and Hardeman,TN), 1846; family moved to Drew Co. AR before 1860 census...undoubtably escaping ravages of Civil War in Hardeman Co. The 6 Howell children were: (1) Sarah L , (2) Margella, -- both with family on AR census in 1860...no additional data (3) Edward Alexander, b. 1839 Martin Co. NC - d. 1872 Drew Co. AR. M.1st to Mattie Todd (daughter of A.J. and L.M. Todd, b.1841/d.Dec. 1862, buried in Hardeman Co.) -- lived in Hardeman Co. TN, Prairie Co. AR; 2nd m. to Martha A. Pierce/Pearce in Drew Co. AR abt. 1867. Edward-- Co. G, F&S,5th AR Inf., named as youngest Colonel in Confederacy. Their son, Edward Alexander Jr., b. 1869-d. 1937, Drew Co was cotton broker, mayor of Pine Bluff, (once owned now-historical landmark home in Pine Bluff, AR located at 656 Laurel St.). (4) Olivia J. Howell , b. 1840 /d. 1872 Drew Co. AR. Wife of Samuel D. Simmons (1835-1905)-Drew Co. AR (5) Martha E. Howell , wife of James P. Stanley * (6) Thomas Polk Howell, b. Jan. 1845. M. 1st 1867 to Elizabeth Prudence Grissom (1851- 1888-Drew Co. AR, daughter of Vinson Snipes Grissom and Christine Dishongh). --have wondered if there is any connection to the Snipes family someone has recently posted. All children born in Selma, Drew Co:---naming all in hopes of recognizing naming patterns of other Howell lines Frannie, b. 1868, (M. Dr. Joseph E. Norcott,1888) --children included Arnett, Cecil, Arline Jimmie/died @ 2 yrs. Ivie Ewing, b. 1873-d. 1945, banker and civic leader in Waldo, AR; Wiley/ died @ 8 yrs. -- sure have wondered if this name has any connection to the other Howell line with a "Wiley" Casper, died @ 2 yrs. Claud, died @ 2 yrs. Earl, died @ 5 yrs. Pat, infant son *Ina Rebecca, 1885, my grandmother (M. Clint Atkins. Daly, Fordyce, AR) Thomas' 2nd M., 1889, Fordyce, Dallas Co. AR to Jennie Robinson . All of their children born in Dallas Co. AR: Sarah Elizabeth, d. infant, 1891 Thomas Edwin, b. 1892, d. 1921 Bauxite, AR (married to Lillie McClue of Benton, AR, son-Thomas E. Howell Jr,.- legally adopted by Lillie's 2nd husband, last name of Harley --moved to Florida in 1920s) Van Manning, b. 1894-- d. 1956, married to Mary Pattillo of Fordyce, AR, no children, business and civic leader in Fayetteville, AR Questions: Both Edward and Mattie Todd Howell were in Prairie Co. AR. during early part of war/1860 AR census .... wonder if there was a connection to other Howell family living in same county at time or if they were there because of his military service? She died in Dec. of 1862, was she/they back in Hardeman at the time or did he take her body back home to be buried? Other family was already in Drew Co. AR at same time. Does anyone recognize Margella or Sarah L. Howell 's names linked into area families? Have a great day. Margaret

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY Hi cousins, I hope you're all having a WONDERFUL Wednesday! :) Since there wasn't a huge response to June's Challenge, I've decided to hold a roll call in lieu of July's Challenge... yep, right here in the middle of the year. I've contacted Kristen Howell, manager of the HOWELL-SURNAME team. She'd like to have those cousins participate as well. So, this is going to be the first 5H family roll call! :) Cousins on the HOWELL-L: You should expect to receive EVERY roll call message coming from each of the HOWELL-non-USA-L, HOWELLS-SOUTHERN-L, HOWELL-SURNAME-L and HOWLE-L as they are posted. Conversely, all HOWELL-non-USA, HOWELL-SURNAME, HOWLE and HOWELLS-SOUTHERN applied messages in the HOWELL-L roll call will be crossposted over to our smaller counterparts. For the next two weeks everyone please be sure to keep your mailboxes emptied so we don't have a slew of bounced messages and you won't miss out on even one post. Cousins who are homebound ... be sure NOT to skip this roll call. One of the cousins who travel might see your message and select it to incorporate with his/her research trip, providing you with the results! (yes, it DOES happen here in the family) Roll call? What IS she talking about now??? For those of you who are brand new to online genealogy, or just genealogy in general, this next part is for you: TO OUR NEWBIES and NOVICES ~~ (Print this out if you need to) ~~ ROLL CALL FAQs *** A roll call means EVERYONE in the family should post those lines they are looking for. It's kind of like reporting in to the list saying, "here I am ... looking for (whoever)." This is also the time our lurkers come out and "report in." *** You should expect traffic on the HOWELL-L and HOWELLS-SOUTHERN-L to be extremely heavy this week and possibly part of next. Although you can post a query anytime during the year, roll calls here are special because everyone is expected to post... including our lurkers (those people who monitor a list but don't participate). It's an important time and you don't want to miss out, but your mailboxes may get full fast. Please be sure to check them daily and keep them emptied so your mail won't bounce. *** Although the traffic is going to get heavier and may be a strain on your time to keep up, PLEASE STAY WITH US. This will only last about two weeks, if that. You don't want to unsubscribe just as an inline cousin is posting a line you've been watching for, then end up missing the very message you've waited all this time for! :( *** Be sure to use ONLY that email address to post with that you signed up to the list with. Any other address will not be recognized by Rootsweb and their servers will kick your message out of the system. *** Send your roll call messages DIRECTLY TO YOUR LIST team at <HOWELL-L@rootsweb.com> or <HOWELL-non-USA-L@rootsweb.com> or <HOWELL-SURNAME-L@rootsweb.com> or <HOWELLS-SOUTHERN-L@rootsweb.com> or <HOWLE-L@rootsweb.com> whichever you belong to. Please DO NOT send them to me as I am only one person with one line when, what you want, is for ALL the cousins to see who you're looking for. *** There is no special format. You just need to remember to include names, dates and places as best you can. If you're nervous about this, you might want to sit back a day or two and read some of the other cousins' posts and see how they did it, then just do what they did. Everyone has their own style and preference for setting up a roll call message. *** If you're a newbie, the best thing you can do for yourself is to announce it first thing in your message! It alerts the rest of us to be especially watchful of your material. PLEASE MAKE YOUR SUBJECT LINE READ SOMETHING LIKE THIS: ROLL CALL: Howell, Caleb (1782-1860/70, NY > OH> MI) ROLL CALL: Howle, Johann (Switzerland, PA, IL) PLEASE DO **NOT** MAKE YOUR SUBJECT LINE READ LIKE THIS: John Howell (or) Howle family (or) Roll call Subject lines should have enough information so that a potential reader will know if they are interested before reading the message itself. This means, at the very least a place (a state/country preferably with county/region) and a time period. Even better is an actual name, but that's probably secondary unless he/she is the focus of the question. "PA Howell" is okay; "Lehigh, PA Howell 1750+" is better. Help us to help you by giving clear subject lines, okay? Thanks. :) I hope this answers any questions you might have, but if not, go right ahead and ask! Your post is every bit as important as mine or any other cousin's. :) Colleen ______________________________
PHILIP is my long time brickwall. Looking for info on PHILIP HOWELL' S parents...ancestors. I suspect that his people came from the south...wife was born in Union Co.,Sc...also know there were HOWELLS in Tenn. in same time frame that had the naming pattern including repeated use of PHILIP ( one L) and BENJAMIN in their lines. My PHILIP named one son PHILIP BENJAMIN. Have lots of info on his children ...most went to the Perry Co, IN area. Any ideas will be appreciated!!!! Ron K.
Carol, I have unearthed my pedigree chart and found that my Joseph HOWELL was born c1830 in TN, married Hannah Caroline GIBBS (b. c1829 in NC) in May 1850. Their daughter Mary HOWELL (b.1852 Erwin TN) m. Andrew Jackson SHELTON (b1848 Madison Co., NC.) No, I'm not on the PACE mailing list. Along with my HOWELL line I'm trying to research GIBBS, SHELTON, HYDE, LEATHERWOOD, MOORE, BRIGGS, SAMS, WELCH, and SAMS. These are just my maternal line. Can't do much of anything right now. I'm trying to build on my sister's research. Things are hectic in my life right now. I've been in an accident (minor injuries but still a hassle) and trying to prepare to move within two months. So that's why I haven't answered the roll call. Thanks for your answer Carol. I finally dug out my pedigree chart which tells me that my Joseph Howell was born about 1830 in TN., married Hannah Caroline Gibbs b ca 1829 in NC. I'm trying to build on my sister's research, very busy with other matters and not doing much of a job of it. Ann & Lew MYPace -Howell Connection in 1770's VA & NC and by Bruce Howard in his Book says Thomas Pace b- 1754 -m- Keziah Howell d/o Joseph Howell & grand daug of Aquillas Suggs but some say Keziah Howell was not born until 1770 and my Thomas Pace died in Rev war abt 1771 and some say Keziah Howell b- 1750's so I am trying to find when she was born..There's a lot info on these Howells but afraid they are not sure when children born.. and would say a lot of people take other info as gospil and not cked out the lines right..Bruce Howard also says in his book Elizabeth Howell d/o Joseph HOwell and 1st wife Suggs -m- Richmond Pace, Thomas Pace younger Bro and Bruce Howard is a known Genealogist but he has no proof of these marriages and assuming they married as he did find a Land sale of Thomas Pace selling land for a Keziah Pace (his Wife and Elizabeth Pace & Richmond Pace (his brother) and believe it was land given to the girls by Their Grandfather Aquillas Suggs and we know Aquillas Suggs Daug -m- Joseph Howell so that may be the only piece of Evidence that they were daug of Joseph Howell & Suggs wife of NC ( sorry I have at this moment forgotten Joseph Howells first wife name as I had kinda put it back for a bit as I hate birck walls..and find if I put them aside for a bit my mind will get rid of that Brick wall ((Grin)) ) Then My Grandfather Wm Pace -m- into the Hopkins who married into the Stones who -m- in to the Howells in NC this Stone Howell Connection moved to Mo 1795.. G'day Folks, Just joined the list for a while. I have come across a family by the name of HOWELL that are related. Sarah Clough born 6 March 1892 New York, married 15 Dec 1919 to John Smith HOWELL. No dates on John or Sarah just the above. They had a son Morton Smith HOWELL born 17 Feb 1921, died May 1955 NJ. Morton married, wife unknown and had two sons. I don't know if he had more family. Judd HOWELL date of birth etc unknown. I think might live in Washington State Andrew HOWELL same as above. I think lives in CA The relation to me is about 5th cousins, fairly diluted. I have been looking for Sarahs descendants for years. Any help appreciated Regards Owen Clough Christchurch New Zealand
Carol, do you have an approximate dob for Joseph Howell? A Joseph Howell was my gr-gr-grandfather. I'm not sure where he was born, but it would have been either NC or TN.
