    2. Sorry, but we do not have Luce family members in our ancestry. Good luck on your quest. Barbara Hout King . . . ---------- Original Message ---------- From: "Shelley Cardiel" <cardiels@comcast.net> To: <HOUT@rootsweb.com> Subject: [HOUT] LUCE - HOUTS Family Photograph Date: Fri, 16 May 2014 22:01:13 -0700 I've "rescued" an old photograph of Bessie and Vera LUCE which was taken at the Tripp Studio in Ogden, UT. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with the girls ranging in age from infant to 4 years at the time. Bessie May LUCE was b. in 1904 in Utah to parents Charles B. LUCE (b. 1873) and Harriet Isabelle HOUTS (b. 1876). Bessie was one of 5 children born to this couple including, Bessie May; Veria or Vera Frances; Charles R.; Ethel E.; and Freida Katherine LUCE, all born between 1904 and 1912. Vera Frances LUCE was b. in 1906. Vera first married Fred KANZLER (1903-1934) with whom she had two children, Jean Lois; and Gloria Mae KANZLER born in 1926 and 1927 respectively. Vera's second husband was Arthur STONE (1902-1933). Vera and her husband and two daughters all died in a mysterious house fire on 27 Jun 1933 at Five-Mile Lake near Tacoma, WA. At the time of Vera's death her Mother was still living and listed as Harriet RICHARDS of Portland, OR; sister Bessie was listed as Bessie BICKER of California; with two other sisters noted as Ethel and Freida RICHARDS of Portland, OR; a brother Charles LUCE was noted as being from Spokane, WA. Vera and her entire family are buried together in the Mountain View Memorial Park in Lakewood, WA. Census records provide the following details: 1910 census of Milton, WA: Charles B. LUCE, age 45, married 6 years, born MI, parents born USA, a Street Railroad Watchman Hattie I. LUCE, wife, age 33, married 6 years, 4 children/4 living, born MO, parents born IL/MO Bessie May LUCE, dau, age 6, born UT Veria F. LUCE, dau, age 4, born UT Charles R. LUCE, son, age 2, born UT Ethel E. LUCE, dau, age 3 months, born WA 1920 census of Tacoma, WA: Charles B. LUCE, age 47, born MI, parents born ME/PA Harriet I. LUCE, wife, age 35, born MO, parents born MO Bessie LUCE, dau, age 15, born UT Vera LUCE, dau, age 13, born UT C. Roman LUCE, son, age 12, born UT Ethel LUCE, dau, age 9 years + 11 months, born WA Freda LUCE, dau, age 7 years + 5 months, born WA I am hoping to locate someone from this LUCE Family so that the photograph can once again be a family possession. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. St Michaels Cemetary is a small cemetary across from St. Michaels Lutheran Church in a very rural area of Marshallville on Marshallville Road. My sister-in-law still lives there close by. During our search for the origin of the Hout name, we think it was German, it was longer and reduced to Hout. My father-in-law's mother was an Etling (Jonh married Bertha Etling). They are also buried in this cemetary. Wish I could be more help, I am still working on the origin of the Hout name. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. But I did find a Caroline Shelling in the 1860 US Federal census for Tuscarawas, Stark County, Ohio. It lists a H. Shilling 22, ann shilling 22 and Caroline Shilling 3/12. Since Stark County borders both Tuscarawas and Wayne counties, This is the most probable person. I will continue to look. She did say that my grandfather Edgar had in fact been married before. She indicated that it was never talked about and that she only found out about it when she was about 13 years old, just before Edgar died. Interesting... Do you have any more information on the Houts and the line of Benjamin Hout that you could share? I have been doing some research into this side of the family, but haven't had a lot of luck. I did get a hold of a digital copy of the Hout Family by Margaret Pittis, but I am not sure just how reliable the information is as it lacks a lot of source material.
