    3. Grand Army of the Republic Records The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization of Union veterans from the U.S. War Between the States. There were hundreds of GAR posts whose members were honorably discharged Union servicemen from the army, navy and marine corps. In order to join a post, a veteran had to complete an application and supply evidence of their service and honorable discharge. While all of the GAR posts have been dissolved, many of their records have been donated to state archives or libraries, to historical societies at the local or state level, or to libraries with genealogical collections. The Grand Army of the Republic Civil War Museum and Library's Web site is a good starting point to help you locate records from various posts. http://suvcw.org/garmus.htm
