My g-g-grandfather's name was Peter House or later Van House and he had a sister Charlotte House Bevins Long who was born in New York. What I know is that her parents names were Benjamin House and Nina Adams House both born in New York. She was married to George Harrison Bevins in Henry County, Illinois Dec. 30, 1877. They had a son Joseph together in Iowa in 1879, but returned to Illinois by 1880 (as they're included in that county's census). We're not sure what happened but they must have divorced since George Bevins remarried by 1891. Family lore says that she was married to a storekeeper and had two children. She apparently was prone to "running off" and one day got on a train to California and no one ever saw her again. My Grandmother has a postcard which was sent from Lottie Long in California (misplaced the name of the town) to her brother Peter. It indicated that she was in the hospital and not doing well. She s! aid that she still had her mules and planned to keep farming her homestead. That's all anyone remembers about her. Her brother Peter and his children lived in Baudette and Graceton, Minnesota (Lake of the Woods/Beltrami County) which is right on the Canadian border and knowing the family a land scheme is right up their alley. I'm not sure if this info. may be helpful, but I'm happy to find out what happened to Charlotte, she was a family legend. Feel free to e-mail me directly.
