He was described as Black, mulatto. He later married Martha E. Crowell, a resident of Rowan County as well, born in 1866 to that of Andrew and Rachel Crowell. John died in 1910. Martha died in 1942. Years after John's death, Martha married Stokes Ingram who later died in 1931. Anyway, John and Martha were married in Gold Hill, N.C. on November 24, 1886. To their union were the following children: Fred House 1888-1937; Eugene House 1894-1923; Maggie House Heilig 1890-1955; Felicia House Belser 1899-1971; Theola House Morgan 1901-1970; and Frankie House Barnhardt 1903-1975. The House family lived and reared in Gold Hill, which is one of the townships of Rowan County. Salisbury is the county seat.
