Elisha House The subject of this brief sketch was born in Vermont, August 28th 1786(sic). He was converted in 1803; licensed to preach by Rev. Arman Owen in 1807; ordained deacon at Barnard, Vermont, by Bishop Asbury in 1811, and elder by Bishop Roberts in 1818 at Lansing, N.Y. On May 5th, 1805 he was married to Miss Lydia Sabin, of Sherburne, N.Y. with whom he lived fifty-nine years, and who bore him nine children, two of whom are yet living. In 1843, he came to Michigan, settling in Paw Paw. He has supplied several changes in this State with acceptability. Kalamazoo and Lansing being among the number. He published two or three books on controversial subjects in which department he evinced great power. He was a strong preacher, being logical rather than rhetorical, though sometimes rising to the highest summit of pulpit eloquence. He was modern in his views being a large reader and progressive thinker. He was active up to within a few weeks of his death when he received a fall which rendered him helpless. He bore his sufferings patiently, coming down to the river of death with perfect calmness and fortitude. He was consious to the last, though sometimes nothing but the word Jesus would rouse him to expressions of thought. He folded his own hands across his breast and almost without a struggle yieded his spirit to God..
