To Whom It May Concern: The undersigned was appointed by a meeting of the House heirs at Kokomo, Indiana, April 13th 1901, to investigate and when anything material was discovered to report to said heirs. We began by communicating with Mr Frank A Huton, of St Paul, Minn., whom we expected to be present at Kokomo, but he says that he was not notified until two days before the meeting took place. He says that he has found NO IMPORTANT RECORDS but believes they can be found. Much time and labor has been spent in writing to parties who were said to have papers and records but none have been found that throw any light on the matter. We have written to every court of record in Maryland and can find no lease recorded. Have a letter from the U.S. Consul in London, England and he thinks it is doubtful if we can find any record there. Have received much advice, many warnings, some demands, and a few scoldings from heirs, etc-- and have this to say in brief: Pay no money to anyone on any pretense whatever in connection with this case. Put no faith in reports about records. Send any real information you may have to me. Remember, that too much importance has been attached to mere hearsay and that while there is a chance for us to get something out of this claim, that it we be a long time before it is settled and that it must be proven, not on mere assertion, but on fact. In every case where we have been referred to records or papers, we have found nothing, except, perhaps family history, and no lease, grant, or other legal record has been brought to our notice. I speak this plainly that you may not build any false hopes, but at the same time we will prosecute our investigations and let you hear by circular only when anything new developes. If you can help by giving facts, write me. Do not expect personal letter, keep cool. If we have a claim against the U S Government and can prove it, we will get it. Don't abuse anybody. We are all doing our best. Very truly, Signed W J Doran Note: I found only one letter from London, England in the House Heirs files that everyone seems to refer to in other letters. It gives the history of the English grant and I'll post it next as it refers to several House English heirs..

We find that Bryn & McPherson Estate, or rather the land held by Bryn and McPherson, who condemned the land of Andrew House, was sold through the Chancery Court in Annapolis, MD, about 1750. We are now endeavoring to secure record of the land held by Bryn and McPherson, to ascertain what right they had to sell it. We have the names of three people around Antietam that own some of the land at present. We also have a record of land granted to ROBERT HOUSE, JOHN HOUSE, and WILLIAM HOUSE., between the years of 1747 and 1789: this information is given us by the Land Commissioner at Annapolis. We also have a letter from the Colonial Office of the English Government in London, under day of October 6, stating records of this nature were on file in the Colonial Office of the XCI Century, and at the same time giving names of two responsible firms of London, to whom, we should apply for services in investigation and furnishing us copies of the records. We have written these people and hope for reply within about forty days. We must have copy of the original grant, before we can proceed further, and before going to the expense of sending an attorney to Maryland, we will secure all the information possible from London. Immediately after we hear from London, the members of the House Organization will be notified. Signed: Mrs J A House, Secretary

He states that it is not policy to make a definite report until we get it all in, because it will cause discontent among a great number of them, and they will get impatient, for the reason they don't receive definite information; therefore, I will get up a short notice and send it to you, to be sent out to them. I will say, CONFIDENTIALLY, for your own information,--- from the General Land Office at AnnapolisMD, giving me the dates of grants to some of the House Family, between years 1740-89, which shows the number of acres, and by referring to the record at any time we can get an abstract. I also have the name of an Att'y at Haggerstown, who handled the case for some heirs, quite a while ago. This information I believe I gave you in a former letter. I do not propose to write this man but hope to see him, and will not correspond with Haggerstown or Annapolis until the time comes for the Attorney and myself to go: then we will go and demand abstracts fo title from the Land Office, which, of course, they will give us. You will note in my first correspondence with the Land Office, they stated they had no records whatever on file; but, forcing the issue with them, they have made a search for us, and gave us what we are after. I will also say that I have written London for information, and it will be about 30-days before I receive a reply from London. The Attorney here thinks that if we stir the matter up any further, through Haggerstown or Annapolis, that the owners of the land are going to cover-up anything they possibly can to save their title. We will therefore allow everything to remain as it now stands, until we hear from London. I trust that in giving information to the heirs, you will say to them that we are getting valuable information which will reach them shortly; that it is not ready for publication at the present time. All heirs were notified to be present to have a voice in the business transactions of the meetings. It was moved and seconded that all present should have an equal right and voice in the meetings. Adopted, Carried. MRS L R ADAMS, National Sec., read the minutes of the Chicago Convention held May 12th, 1900. Where upon there were filed for the reports of MR L R ADAMS explaining the purpose of this called meeting; that it was to hear the report of F A HUTSON, Attny. of St Paul, Minn., which meeting was called by his own request. Further report was given by MR BEVILLE of Chicago, the Chairman of correspondence with Attny Hutson asking his full report to the organization at this convention, and his personal presence. MR BEVILLE further read correspondence between himself and Atty. HUTSON in which MR HUTSON deemed a meeting necessary, but at the last minute found it impossible to be present, which was a source of deep regret to the organization. HUTSON further said in letters as reported by BEVILLE, that he did not get the work in time to leave his business in the office. He reported by letter that he thought that heirs held a claim that could be brought to a successful determinat! ion, but it would take time and a considerable amount of patience on the part of those interested. He said he wanted to meet with the heirs and make arrangements for further proceedings. MRS L R ADAMS moved that the doings of Atty. HUTSON, while in the East be investigated. MRS R S HOUSE, House Treasurer, read and explained the contract between MT HUTSON, the organization and the Treasure. A committee appointed to look up this point was elected. MR WILLIAM A BEVILLE, ex-chairman of Chicago meeting and MR DORAN of Louisville, KY, the present chairman, to act on this point and after the investigation the heirs will all be notified by circular letters of the investigation. All information furnished by MRS ADAMS through the mails is by instructions of the organization. Signed: W J DORAN,.
