It is not verified from official records. I hope House researchers use the letters as a beginning reference as I have only posted the letters as written to the secretary of the House Heirs Association. The House Heirs Association disbanded prior to 1926, somewhere around 1923. My grandfather and his lawyer found one of the House families involved disappeared with what funds had been collected to finance the lawsuit. He disappeared for years but when he died on 5 Dec 1936 in Box Elder Co, Utah another case was tried in the District Court, of the 1st Judicial District of the State of Utah. He had purchased tracts of land and owned considerable personnel property. The State of Utah did not look favorably on out of state claims and it was dismissed. I have certified copies all the official records to verify the court actions and for receipts for payment of the public records as obtained by my grandfather and his lawyer. Was this matter of the House Heirs Association and the land claims that could not be verified for real or was it all along a fraud? WE MAY NEVER KNOW????? However many House families at the time contacted each other and located their lost members. It appears many House heirs were really frustrated by what had happened and any files they had were thrown out. I have more letters in the files, but many are repeating information other family members had written to the House Heirs Association. I want to thank all the House family for their support and hope you found the information helpful in your House Family research. Leonard Granger, Dixon, CA

The following is a handwritten letter, from Mrs A E House. Mr L A Granger Sunday Evening May 16, 1926 Nashua, Iowa Dear Sir: Yours of April 25th received. Was glad that you received papers O.K., for I was a little uneasy about them. I do not doubt your Atty's ability at all but this affair is a great undertaking and many able Atty's have tried it and so far as we know none of them have succeeded, not for lack of ability but because they could not get the most essential part of it-- A COPY OF THE LAND GRANT, or whether it was in this country or England. If I get you right ADOLPHUS HOUSE was a son of ANDREW HOUSE, who was a son (3rd son) of the original ANDREW HOUSE. No I could not begin to give you the names of those entitled to this estate as I have over 450 correspondents on my list and in most cases they represent several heirs. We have our branch of the family back into the 14th century brought down to the American Immigration of ANDREW HOUSE, then down to our own family. We came from JOHN VALENTINE HOUSE AND WILLIAM HOUSE BRANCHES and their children intermarried. You come from the ANDREW HOUSE -son of the original ANDREW HOUSE. There is a branch of the ANDREW HOUSE family at Oakland, ILL. There was 4 or 5 brothers of them. I had the pleasure of meeting three of them, Adolphus, William J. and Charles. They had their House record made a little after we had ours. CHARLES HOUSE, attended one our meetings at Kokomo, Ind, and it was at that time I think he had their family record made. It was a wonderful piece of work to have it traced back to the 14th century. One has to go back to their grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather, and back. If you can trace your own relationship then it will show up the land grant. ANDREW HOUSE (orginal) did not lease the land at all. The U S Government did the leasing. In the early Colonial Days there was a law that large land owners having land, should build mills for the advancement of civilization along streams of water. Failing to do this the land was seized by the government and leased for 99 years, after which time it was to be returned to the owners or his heirs. Oh, say why can't you and your attorney drive down as soon as the roads and weather gets settled and I can tell you a lot more and etc. Will give you the information as to the land was leased to, amount per acre it was leased for, and who collected the rent for some 40 years. I do not know of anyone that could give you any more information, as I have talked or communicated with the heirs since the House Heirs Association gave up. So many have died or moved away that like myself it's hard to tell where we all are. Has your Atty ever looked anything up at Washington D. C.? Will be glad to hear of your success. Signed, Sincerely, Mrs A E House

I will back up to prior page to make the letter more connected. Now there is a matter that I do not understand. May be you can explain it to me. You call ANDREW HOUSE JUNIOR. Now if he is Junior he therefore, must have been a brother to JOHN VALENTINE HOUSE our grandfather and therefore, must have been a very old man. Please explain that and tell us all you know about ANDREW HOUSE JR as we want to do the fair thing and if you can make the matter straight we will make him an heir with us, and go to work and get our estate, if it can be got. We expect soon to see the copy of the patent ( end of page one) Page two: and the heirs will make that all right. So there will be five heirs: WILLIAM, JOSEPH, ANDREW JR, RUTH DOWNS, AND SALLY BARNES. But we must not change the Will till the work is done, as we might lose the case by tampering with the Will, don't you think? I think the heirs ought to have a say in all property compromised, in all property sold, and in all rents where sale or compromise cannot be made by our agent, acting with the attorney. Then I think all the back rents of the property should be sued for, and a suit be brought against the Bank of Baltimore, the Gilman Estate and Brin & McPherson, as the land was condemned at 15 pence (per acre). He is said to have advertized for the heirs of ANDREW HOUSE to come on and get the back rents, there being thirty thousand (30,000) dollars due. The offer to my father to settle with the heirs was for compromise of sixty thousand (60.000) dollars offered by Brin & McPherson in the presence of Ben Pigman said to be the best lawyer in Maryland. Now the above statement came down to me from my parents, and I do not think they would tell a story about it. My mother told me that the cherry orchard farm was given to her mother, whose name before she married was MISS OGLE. I am not positive but I think her given name was ANN OGLE. Now that farm was near Frederick, Maryland. My mother lived sometime with her uncle DANIEL CAMERON at Sherardstown, Virginia when she was a girl and when her uncle CLINTON moved to Geneva, Fayette County, PA. they took her with them to Pennsylvania. She then became the wife of THOMAS PROCTOR. They had no children and my father lived twenty years with his wife and had no children then. Mrs. SALLY PROCTOR married DAVID BARNES and they have seven children. Signed: W A BARNES (Note my House Ancestey Line goes Andrew House, John Valentine House Died 1826, Andrew House Jr b1740, Adolphus House b 1769, Hannah House, b 3 Jun 1804 married Alvah Marsh, their daughter Olive Marsh b 10 Mar 1834 married Ebenezer A Granger, b 2 Nov 1834 then on down to myself. Hannah House,( died in 1882) my gg grandmother Olive Marsh Granger and her son , my grandfather, Lester Granger were all involved in the House Heirs Association in varying degrees up until last letter May 16, 1926 to Lester Granger. Then the House story takes on a whole new turn of events, as a fraud againt the House Heirs Association is suspected and the organization disbands.
